Presentation To Bro. J. J. Berry, P.M. And Treas. 554, P.Z. 554, P.M. 1278, P.Z. 933, &C.

PRESENTATION TO BRO . J . J . BERRY , P . M . AND TREAS . 554 , P . Z . 554 , P . M . 1278 , P . Z . 933 , & c .

On Wednesday evening , the 6 th inst ., at a dinner provided to the complete satisfaction of the company at the Goorge Peabody , Shadwell , Bro . J . J . Berry was presented with a testimonial , consisting of . 1 handsome silver salver weighing 28 ounces , and also a "tantalus , "

indicative of the respect and esteem in which he is held by his fellow parishioners . Bro . Berry has taken an active part in parochial matters for many years past , and served m the position of church warden for several years . He is now leaving the parish in consequence of his business premises having been absorbed for the fish market , but is not going very far away , as he has obtained other

waterside premises in Narrow-street , Limehouse . The Rev . E . Bray presided , supported in the vice-chair by Bro . Churchwarden Arliss , and there were present Bros . Dr . Sargent , Page , Starnes , Verry , Warman , Mellish , Keith , and Waters , also Capt . Taylor , and Messrs . Davis , Hankin , S . Starnes , and others . The inscri ption on the salver and tantalus reads as follows : — " Presented to J . J . Berry as

a token of esteem by his friends in Shadwell , who deeply regret his departnre from the parish . October , 18 S 6 . " Ater dinner the Rector , in a few well chosen words , expressed his delight in presenting Bro . Berry with the testimonial , saying that when he first had the pleasure of being appointed rector of the parish of Shadwell , his then churchwarden was Bro . Berry , who , with his usual tact and

kindness , made him , the rector , at once feel at home , and ever since that time , some five years since , Bro . Berry had been one of his principal supporters in charitable and other parochial matters , and although he was leaving the parish it was a pleasure to know that he had so many staunch friends who regretted his leaving , and they felt sure that Bro . Berry ' s heart was still , and always would remain

with them . Bro . BERRV , on rising to thank his many friends for the very handsome present , said how surprised , but highly p leased , he was at this manifestation of kindness . Words would not express his feelings on this occasion , especially when so many around the table had known him all his life . He should always regard the present with feelings of satisfaction and pleasure , and although he had no chilnren to

follow him , he could assure them that it would be always highly prized by some member of his family , by whom it would remain as evidence of the goodwill with which he had been appreciated in Shadwell . He wished to thank them from the bottom of his heart . Several toasts were given and duly acknowledged , and a most pleasant evening spent , enlivened by songs and recitations .
