THE RECENT SCHOOL ELECTIONS .

Freemasons' Tavern was thc scene of considerable excitement on Thursday and Friday of last week , when the autumn elections for the admission of children into our Scholastic Institutions were held . On both days the great hall was crowded with

the friends and supporters of the different candidates , and the exchange of votes proceeded briskly , especially in the case of the Boys' Election , until the poll was closed . The election into THE ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR GIRLS took place at the Quarterly General Court of the Governors and

Subscribers , on Thursday , the 7 th inst . Bro . Sir REGINALD HANSON , Bart , M . P ., Treasurer , presided , and when the regular business was over , the poll was opened for the election of 15 girls , from an approved list of 26 " . Success was pretty equally divided between London and the Provinces , the former carrying live out of its eight candidates , and the Provinces lo out of its

18 , the remaining girl , who had claims upon town , country , and abroad being among the unsuccessful . The London five were placed ist , nth , 13 th , 14 th , and 15 th , No . 1 obtaining 6834 votes , or considerably more than 2000 in excess of the second successful girl ; No . 11 obtained 3920 votes ; No . 13 , who brought forward

2157 votes from . the April election , 36 9 6 votes ; and Nos . 14 and ' 5 i 333 < 5 and 288 4 votes respectively . The 10 Provincial candidates who won vacancies were placed as follows : the Worcestershire girl , No . 2 , with 4 6 45 votes ; the Sussex , No . 3 , with 4420

votes ; two of the three West Yorkshire lassies at No . 4 and No . 6 , with 4300 votes in the former case , and 4253 in the latter , the Gloucestershire candidate being sandwiched between them at No . 5 with 4280 votes , of which 2612 were brought forward from April . No . 7 , with claims on the two Lancashiros ,

stood seventh with 4212 , and as this was her only chance ol obtaining admission into the Institution , she is to be congratulated on the success achieved in her behalf by her friends and supporters . The next in . order hailed from Oxfordshire , and polled 7 85 votes in April . On this occasion she increased

Iter total to 4188 , and thereby won thc eighth place , while No . 9 , from Kent , scored 408 7 votes , and No . 10 , from Norfolk and Suffolk , 3962 votes . The remaining Provincial , from Warwickshire , was placed 12 th with 3705 . West Yorkshire , we regret her failure , but it is evident , from the smallness of her total , that the Province did not support her candidature . As regards the votes , there wen ; 9088 brought forward from April and 7 ( 1 , 155 issued for this election , making

the total available 85 , 243 , but of the number issued there were only 68 , 080 polled , so that there remain S 075 to be accounted for , the bulk of them , of course , being unused . The election into

Board of Management . The number of vacancies was 16 —• one having been added since the issue of the voting papers , and the number of candidates competing for ( hem 47—reduced by the withdrawal of two Provincial cases , from 41 ; as

originally declared . Mere the contest was an exceedingly keen one , as may imagined from the large number of candidates , and from the fact that between the boys who emerged first and 16 th on the poll the difference in the number of votes they respectively

obtained did not great !) ' exceed 800 , while the number of unused votes was only 3039 out of a total issued for this election of 84 , 524 . As between London and the Provinces , the former , which furnished , 17 candidates , was successful in carrying only

conjointly with Derbyshire , polled 4124 . The East Lancashire youth stood ninth with 4110 votes , and thc boy in whose success it had a part interest with Middlesex and Monmouthshire was 1 ithwith 4086 votes , the case with claims on Guernsey , Hants and Isle of

Wight , and Malta taking the intermediate place with 4109 votes . No . 12 from London and Kent , polled 3993 votes , of which 2131 were brought forward from April . No . 13 from Northumberland polled 39 83 votes , and No . 14 from Cumberland and

Westmoreland , who had compiled 1161 vote . at four previous ballots , increased that number to 3908 , while No . 15 from London , starting with 2023 to his credit finished up with a total of 3800 . The last to win a vacancy had 1124 votes in hand at starting and
