In reply to the salute of the companions , Sir Henry Edwards sai 1 : Companions , no one could stand iu the position 1 at the present moment occupy , as Provincial Grand Superintendent of this province , without feeling some emotion , lc is now ajipro .-iclii . ig four years since I was ins ailed Piovincial Grand Master of West Yorkshire by Lieutenant-Colonel Le Gendre N . Starkie , and

today I have been placed b y him at the head of this chapter , in the p isition so lately occupied by our departed Comp . Bentley Shaw . Deeply do we all regret that the space of four years should have witnessed the retirement of oneilistinguishe 1 Provincial Grand Superintendent and the death of another , and the necessity for the installation of myself in their room . To fill both these high offices does indeed

create no little sentiment of emotion , feeling the double responsibility of high duties to perform , viz ., to sustain the dignity of this Grand Chapter as well as Provincial Grand L > e ! ge , to maintain the honour of Freemasonry , to preserve the ancient landmarks of our Order , and to enforce mildly , yet courageously , the disipline of the Books of Constitution- - To us it is a real pleasure to leave

outsiele the doo-s of this chapter all those differences which create dissensions , more or less , with persons engaged wilh politics ; , or with religious opinion , or the business occupations of the world , and to meet Royal Arch Alasons , all of one mind , all of one voice , anel all of one heart , in the performance of a solemn ceremony as that which the Prov . Grand Superintendent of Eist

Lancashire his now so perfectly and eloquently performed . No sooner had I felt the necessity of complying with the commands of the Prince of Wales thin 1 applied to my gallant brother and companion to undertake this ceremony of installation . You have greeted hi . u most warmly with tbe honour due to his rank , and on behalf of myself and this Granel Chapter we thank him heartily and sincerely

for the admirable m inner he has performed the c . remony , and the exhortation he has given us . His name will never hi forgotten by the Freemasons of East Lancashire- , and 1 am quite sure the Alasonic work which he uinlertakcs in that large province will hear good fruit—and amongst the fruits of that work is a course of -public usefulness outside the loige as well as in it , and which East Lancashire

warmly ajipreciates . The ostensible object eif llojal Arch AI xsonry , the end an . I aim of this branch of our symbolic system , the . study of its his ' . orj—revealed and traditional , is to biing us into more intimate connection with certain canonical books of the Hol y Sciiptures . Numberless authoiities well known have amply explained this order in Freemasonry . It inspires its members with most exilted

1 leas , and leads to the exercise of the purest reverence for the eternal Ruler of the universe , the e'liiiuntal spring and priinordiil source of religious principles , the very fountain of the virtues , Faith , Hope , and Charity , lt is an Order of which every Alaster Alason ought to become a sujiporter , to the best of his time and nic .-iiif . This was an earnest desire of my lamented piedecessor in this chair , expressed al lludleisfiell , the last time he officially appeared

amongst us , and he added , " We meet for no unholy purpose , li t for wise and judie-iois actio . i in a good cause . " The i" o ' l .-r of chapters _ ¦ altered about this province afforel ,. ... ile opportunities for effecting the consummation of C . imp . K . Comp . Sir Henry Edwauls , Prov . G . Sup ., proposed a vote of thanks to Colonel Starkie for his eminent services as Installing Z . E . Cjmp . invitation for Prov . G . Chapter to meet at Uppermill in Alay , 1 S 79 . Al . E . Comp . Superintendent promised to give in his consideration , and fix the meeting at an early dale . The chapter was then closed in due form shortly after 6 p . m . The a la fourchctte was served in the bamiuct hall , at

Supeiintenilent presided , Rayal and Alasonic toasts were duly honoured and addresses given , varied by songs and instrumental music . We are hajijiy in being able to state that the subscription for the Bentley Shaw Scholarship , G ' uls'School now reaches the handsome sum in the whole of £ 3 80 .

" The i" o ' l .-r of chapters _ ¦ altered about this province afforel ,. ... ile opportunities for effecting the consummation of C . imp . Shaw ' s last wishes , and now my own . 1 hope the ehajiters in this jirovincc will be cirefully worked , and tint they will co-operate as well with mc , their new chief , as tiny did with the old , foe peace-, unity , and love ' . And now , biethren , 1 thaukiyou once again for your cordial le-
