Reports Of Masonic Meetings.

and respected trio were discussing the advisability of returning the warrant to Grand Lodge , Bro . Higginbotham remarked that as he had the warrant he should keep it , whereupon the other two stated their willingness to support him in his efforts to resuscitate the lodge , and bring it back to its former standard . How far they succeeded is shown from the present satisfactory position of the lodge , not only as regards its funds , but the number of subscribing

members in it , most of whom attend regularly , and are capable of performing the various duties allotted them most creditably . The following brethren were present : Bros . W . J . Cunliffe , VV . The lodge having been opened , and the minutes of the previous meeting read and confirmed , the ballot was taken for Mr . C . Daber , as a candidate for initiation , and being unanimous in his favour , he was subsequently initiated by Bro . J . R . Lever , P . M ., the W . M . reserving his powers for

a later period of the day . The ceremony of installation was then proceeded with , Bro . W . J . Cunliffe , W . M ., officiating as Installing Master . We may perhaps be pardoned for digressing a little In order to state that Bros . Edwards , Cunliffe , and VVilson are partners in a well-known Manchester house , and have followed each other to the W . M . ' s chair , butin reverse order as their names appear in the firm . After the usual preliminaries , Bro . John Whitfield Edwards ,

W . M . elect , was presented to the Installing Master by Bro . James Wilson , P . M ., and , with all due rite and ceremony , inducted into the chair of K . S . Upon the readmission of the M . M . ' s , the Installing Master announced to them that Bro . J . VV . Edwards had been installed W . M . for thc ensuing 12 months , and called upon them to salute him as such . When this formality had been observed , the VV . M . appointed the following brethren officers for the

ensuing year , and they were accordingly invested by Bro . W . Nicholl , P . M ., as follows : Bros . R . R . Lisenden , S . W . ; J . Garside , J . VV . ; VV . Nicholl , P . M ., Treas . ( invested by the VV . M . ); E . Smith , Sec ; VV . B . Akerman , S . D . ; G . C Friihling , J . D . ; John Bladon , P . M ., P . P . G . D . C ,, D . C ; John R . Lever , P . M ., Org . ; E . Wihl , I . G . ; Isaac Pearson , H . Kerr , E . G . Chesworth , and C . V . Auger , Stwds . ; and J . Sly , Tyler . Bro . James

Wilson , P . M ., delivered the address to the W . M ., andBro . John Bladon , P . M ., to the Wardens and brethren . The balance-sheet , which showed a very satisfactory state of things , was reported upon by the Auditors—Bros . Bladon and Friihling—and adopted . A vote of thanks was awarded the Auditors for their seivices . A Past Master ' s iS-carat gold jewel was presented to the I . P . M ., Bro . VV . J . Cunliffe , for his valuable services during the past year , and , in

returning thanks for this mark of the brethren ' s appreciation , he said he should always regard the jewel as a link binding him to the lodge as long as he lived . The jewel was manufactured by Bro . George Kenning , 47 , Bridge-street , Manchester . Bro . J . Cunliffe gave a notice of motion that the sum of 10 guineas be voted from the lodge funds , and placed on Bro . Garsidc ' s list of subscriptions , to the Royal Masonic

Benevolent Institution . There being no further business , "Hearty good wishes" were expressed by the numerous visitors , and the lodge was closed in peace and harmony at seven o'clock . The brethren afterwards sat down to a capital dinner , which would have been all the more enjoyable if better generalship had been shown over the disposal of the waiters , a certain number of whom should be instructed to commence

from the W . M . and work right and left , whilst the others should work from the Wardens' chairs in the same manner . In every other respect the dinner was a complete success , and Bro . Phillips may be congratulated for his catering . Dinner over , the VV . M . proposed the usual loyal toasts , which were received with every manifestation of pleasure by the brethren . The toast of " VV . Deputy Grand Master , Bro . George

Mellor , and the Present and Past Prov . Grand Officers , " was responded toby Bro . H . L . Rocca , P . P . G . J . D . In proposing the toast of the evening—viz ., "The W . M . of the Affability Lodge "—Bro . J . R . Lever , P . M ., said he felt highly honoured at being asked to propose the toast , because he had the pleasure some few years ago of initiating Bro . Edwards into Freemasonry , and he ( Bro . Edwards ) was the first of his initiates who had filled the

chair . As the brethren were aware , the VV . M . had followed his two partners in business into the chair , and , he would not say unfortunately , but fortunately , they had gone their wrong ends up ; nevertheless , whether they came in heads or tails , they had worthily won their positions , and had proved good and true Masons , and no three brethren bad ever done more for charity in the Affability Lodge than the members of that well-known firm , Edwards ,

Cunliffe , and Wilson . Bro . Lever went on to say that in coming to the chair Bro . Edwards would have the full confidence of every member of the lodge , and would be well supported by his P . M . ' s and ofiicers , who would do all in their power to assist him . He would , in conclusion , ask the brethren to rise and drink the health of one of the best

Masons that ever became a member of 317 . The invitation was promptly and cheerfully responded to , after which Bro . Eckersley sang , " Here ' s to his health in a song . " The W . M ., in reply , said he was not going to inflict upon the brethren a long speech , but would content himself by saying he felt very much flattered by Bro . Lever ' s remarks , and honoured by lhc confidence the brethren

had reposed in him by unanimously electing him to the position of W . M ,, particularly so , as at the time of election he was absent from the lodge through illness . He felt very pleased at being captain of the good ship Affability , and satisfied she was manned by an efficient crew of officers . He assured the brethren he would do his utmost to merit their confidence .

At this stage Bro . Cunliffe , I . P . M ., rose and stated he had just received a telegram from two brethren in North Africa , whom he had met there some time ago , sending hearty good wishes for the prosperity of the lodge and a successful year of office for the W . M . Bro . Cunliffe also stated that the two brethren intended sending a guinea and a-half , to be devoted to whatever Charity the W . M .

might think fit . The announcement was received with great pleasure by all present , and the health of these two worthy Masons in North Africa was drunk with enthusiasm . Bro . Cunliffe said it was the intention of the W . M . to give the money to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution . Several other toasts were proposed and responded to ,

including "The I . P . M . and Installing Master , " "The Visitors , ' " "The P . M . 's , " "Newly-invested Officers , " & c , and , after a most enjoyable evening , the brethren separated . During the proceedings some capital songs and glees were sung by Bros . E . Wormleighton , H . Walmsley , M . Thomas , T . Shorrock , J . R . Lever , & c , and the newlyinitiated Bro ., Chas . Daber ( whose health was drunk ) , performed a brilliant selection on the piano .
