twelve months old , and that it was now 34 strong , and that they were surrounded by a large number of visitors as well , : seemed to him extraordinary that so much should have been effected in the course of twelve months . It was very ^ ratify ing , and it was further gratifying to know that this result had been brought about mainly by the assistance he ( Bio . Everett ) had received from his efficient officers . It was rather curious that Everett should follow
liverett , considering that there was no relationship between them , excepting the Masonic fellowship which bound them together . There was now an Everett the Second in the chair , and on his behalf he ( Bro . George Everett ) had to ask that if they saw in the VV . M . any shortcomings , they would make every allowance for him , and that they would assist him in every possible way . The VV . M ., in reply , assured the brethren that as long
as he occupied the chair nothing would be wanting on his part to promote the interests of the Chiswick Lodge . The lodge was but little more that twelve months eld , and yet it commanded such a large gathering as they had present that evening . It was a great credit to the lodge , and he should feel it a pride to promote the interests of the lodge as much as he could . The toast of " The Initiates " was responded to by both
those brethren , who hoped they would become bright ornaments in the Order . The toast of "The Visitors "followed . Bro . Ferguson , as one of the respondents , said the proposition of the VV . M . gave him the opportunity of ieturning thanks on two grounds—first of congratulating the Chiswick Lodge on the wonderful progress it had made since it was consecrated . He thanked the brethren for the way in which
they had received the toast so kindly proposed by the VV M ., and for the very kind recognition of what he had done . He trusted that he should always be useful as a Mason . When first he came to the lodge he was ornamental ; the second time , when the W . M . was ill , he was useful ; and at the present meeting he had tried to make himself useful . To him this was most agreeable . He did not like to be a wallflower , and he had had the satisfaction
of being able to do something . When the lodge was a little older it would require no extraneous aid , and those who had assisted now would all be wallflowers , and they would all admire the way in which the members of the lodge did its work . That would be admirable . It was also an excellent thing that the first W . W . had set the example of installing his successor , and this was an office Which every W . M . should perform . With such an
example in the Chiswick Lodge there was no doubt it must succed . Bro . Chapman , who also responded , said he did not know whether the brethren had seen any picture in which surprise was depicted by open mouths and extended hands , but if they had they might imagine that that was the way in which he ought to be represented on this occasion , for he felt much surprise at the way in which the I . P . M . had
excelled himself in the style in which he installed his successor and delivered the addresses . His next surprise was at the way the W . M . had conducted the working . It had been expected that he would hardly have a word to say for himself , but he had invested his ofiicers as though he had been an old Past Master in the Craft . He had also been surprised at the responses of the Initiates , and likewise with the lavish hospitality with which every one had been
entertained . He had been invited to enjoy himself in a quiet way , but he had found unbounded liberality in the banquet . Further , he was surprised that he should have been called upon to respond . Bro . VV . VV . Morgan , W . M . 211 , also replied , and in the course of his remarks said that the Queen had wished her urn Ie , the Duke of Sussex , who was then Grand Master , to make Prince Albert a Freemason , but that the illustrious
Duke told her that her husband should have no secrets from her . The reply of Queen Victoria was that if she had any sons they should be Freemasons . Her Majesty had shown her interest in the Craft by becoming Patron of the Masonic Institutions . The W . M . next proposed "The Health of the I . P . M ., Bro . George Everett , " and presented him with an elegant jewel ( manufactured by Bro . George Kenning ) , surmounted
by a beautiful miniature picture of old Chiswick Church . He narrated the circumstances under which Bro . Everett yielded to the persuasion put upon him to become the first Master of the lodge , and said that it was only by strong persuasion that he again consented to take a leading part in Masonry . He had done his work well , and he had led 'he Chiswick Lodge to a position of prosperity . The toast was received with acclamation and " he is a jolly good
fellow . " Bro . George Everett , I . P . M ., in reply , said that Bro . Chapman had mentioned surprises which had met him that day ; but he ( Bro . Everett ) must say he was surprised , though , at the same time , flattered and pleased at the reception given to this toast . He was very happy to think 'hat the brethren thought him a jolly good fellow . He was pleased to receive at the hands of the lodge the handsome
jewel pinned on his breast by the W . M . It had been his good fortune many times during his extended Masonic career to receive tokens of the esteem and regard of his brother Masons ; but he did not know that he had ever received a greater compliment than the presentation of this 1 i e j * ' by the Chiswick Lodge . He was taken by surprise when he was asked to be the first Master of this lodge , and He was the more surprised to find himself weak enough to
ceept the post , because he had previously resolved to take a back seat in Freemasonry . However , he did agree to come again to the fore , and he obtained the warrant for tins lod ge . Although he went into it reluctantly at first , "e did not rei . ret \ t an ( j ne was highly pleased at the reu " . The Chiswick Lodge had been a great success , and

Stevens , of London , who was then present , and whom he had pleasure in introducing to the lodge . He had no doubt that the members would give him a hearty welcome and an attentive hearing .
Bro . James Stevens , who , on rising , was most cordially received , then occupied the earnest attention of all present during two and a-half hours , whillst he discoursed of the " Knobs and Excrescences " which are still to be found in the ritual and ceremonial of the Third Degree . His remarks were evidently much appreciated by the several
Past Masters present , as well as by the younger portion of his audience , and , notwithstanding the length of his address , its conclusion was sought to be deferred for further explanations . The thanks of the lodge were expressed to Bro . Stevens in high laudation of his lecture and services , and the same were ordered for record on the
minutes . There was no other business , and the lodge was closed in due form , and the brethren subsequently partook of supper , and separated at the customary , hour .
MANCHESTER . —Lodge of Affability ( No . 3 J 7 )• —The installation meeting was held and St . John ' s Festival celebrated in the Freemasons' Hall , Cooper-street , on Tuesday , the Gth inst . The meetings of the lodge are always held on the first Thursday in every month ; but , in consequence of New Year ' s Day falling this year on Thursday , a very small muster of the brethren was
anticipated , consequently a dispensation was applied for , and granted , to postpone the meeting until the following Tuesday . The wisdom for such a course was apparent by the appearance of nearly Go brethren , who assembled to do honour to Bro . Edwards' installation . The lodge has during the last few years been steadily increasing its members , and
the knowledge of this fact must be intensely gratifying to Bro . J . L . Hine , P . M ., P . P . G . S . W ., who is aptly termed the " father of Charity , " and who is at the present time the oldest member of the lodge . Bro . Mine recollects very well when the number of members was reduced to three , viz ., himself , the late Bro . Higginbotham , and another , whose name at this moment escapes us . When this worthy

The thanks of the lodge were expressed to Bro . Stevens in high laudation of his lecture and services , and the same were ordered for record on the
minutes . There was no other business , and the lodge was closed in due form , and the brethren subsequently partook of supper , and separated at the customary , hour .
