Masonic Notes .

Last week , towards the close of our series of Notes on the subject of "Masters and Wardens , " we expressed our inability to furnish the grounds on which the late Bro . John Hervey had decided that a brother who had been appointed S . W . by proxy—it being his first

appointment as Warden—was not eli gible for the Master ' s chair . Our attention has since been called to a case which was before Grand Lodge on the £ th December , 18 77 , and which no doubt actuated Bro . Hervey in deciding as he did . The case , briefly put , is as follows .

Bro . the Rey . John E . Marks , during his absence in England , was appointed S . W . of the Lod ge Victoria in Burmah , No . S 32 , Rangoon , at the usual time in January . He did not return to India till A p ril or May , and did not take his seat as Warden till August . When the

time for the election of a new Master came round , objection was taken to the eli g ibility of Bro . Marks , on the 1 ground that , as required in the then Book of ConstitU ' tions page 62 , Article 2 , he had not served the office of Warden for one year . , The Master over-ruled the

objection , and Bro . Marks was declared eli g ible , and elected . The case was carried to the Deputy District Grand Master , who also ruled that Bro . Marks was eli g ible , and his election valid . Appeal was then made

to Grand Lodge , which , on the advice of the then Grand Registrar ( the late Bro . Mclntyre ) , reversed the decisionof the Deput y District Grand Master of Burmah , and declared that Bro . Marks was not eli gible for the office of Master .
