The P . G . M ., the Marquess of Zetland , was entertaining a large party at Aske Hall , or he would have attended that day ' s important function . An excellent selection of vocal music , interspersed between the customary loyal and Masonic toasts , in the course of which several very able and

interesting speeches were made . The entire arrangements were carried out without a hitch , as befitting to such an auspicious occasion , Thc Earl of Yarborough , Senior Grand Warden of England , had intended to have been present , but was compelled to proceed to London . Provincial Grand Chapter Of Hampshire.

PROVINCIAL GRAND CHAPTER OF HAMPSHIRE .

The Provincial Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight met on the 29 th ult ., at the Masonic Hall , Winchester , when there were present Comps . W . W . B . Beach , M . P ., G . Supt . ; J . E . Le Feuvre , Prow G . H . ; and T . W . Faulkner , Prov . G . J . The general attendance of Present and Past Principals was very large . The Prov . G .

Ireasurer , Comp . 1 tiling , submitted the accounts , which were extremel y satisfactory in every point . Every chapter had paid up the dues , and there was a balance in hand of ^ 34 13 s . 4 d . It was stated also that Royal Arch Masonry was prospering in the province , for out of 24 chapters all but four had had exaltations during the year . The balance-sheet was adopted , and

the Audit Committee were appointed . The Prov . G . Treasurer was heartily and unanimously re-elected for the fourth time , and , returning thanks for the compliment , he suggested that if one or two of the chapters would send in their dues somewhat earlier than they had done , it would be more convenient .

The Grand Superintendent then invested the officers as under : Comp . J . E . Lc Feuvre ... ... ... Prov . G . H . „ Stopher , 76 ... ... ... Prov . G . J . „ \ i . G . Goble , 309 ... ... ... Prov . G . S . E . ,, E . N . Cross , 195 ... ... ... Prov . G . S . N .

Comp . GOUI . E moved that ^ 3 3 s . should voted from I ' rov . Grand Chapter funds in aid of the expense of printing the Provincial Calendar . Comp . J ACOB seconded , and the resolution was agreed to . The next business arose out of a resolution come to by Grand Chapter ,

as to the alteration of the qualilying period for exaltation of a brother from 12 months to three months after hc shall have become a Master Mason . It was stated lhat there was a strong opinion in ah the chapters adverse to such a change from 12 months to 28 days , and some desired its reference back to Grand Chapter .

The GRAND SII-ERINTENDENT said he was not present in Grand Chapter , and was not in any way responsible for what took place there . He thought that a year ' s probation was , perhaps , loo long , but a change to one month was too extreme . A short time ago some alteration was suggested , and it waa

said in Grand Chapter that it was impossible to make any ch , nge in Royal Arch Masonry . If such action as he had spoken of were to be taken , he thought it might be altered to a . term of three or six months . lt was not desirable to rush into extremes . It was a question that each chapter shoultl consider carefully , and give Grand Chapter its opinion .

Comp . ATKINS had hoped to have heard more about the proceedings of Grand Chapter and also the opinion of other chapters in the province . Comp . BLACKMAN said his chapter was opposed to it . Comp . J ACOH was opposed lo the change , but seconded a suggestion of six months made by Comp . Atkins in order to elicit the opinion of Provincial Grand Chapter .

Comp . LE FEUVRE said thc Provincial Grand Secretary was not present when Grand Chapter adopted the resolution , and it was received late for insertion in thc agenda , lt was now the duty of the Provincial Grand Chapter and the chapters generally to move in the matter , and to propose ilw

non-conlirmation of the resolution in Grand Chapter , and that three or six months be subslituttd for four weeks . ' 1 heir Principals must attend Grand Chapter to support these views , l ' he suggested alteration was not brought forward by London chapters , who supported tlie one month limit , and tin ; country chapters were almost all opposed to it .

A resolution that the resolution of Grand Chapter be not confirmed was unanimously carried . In view of the increased number of-officers lo what the province was no «' entitled , because il had over 25 chapters , the P . G . Treasurer was authorised to provide the necessary regalia . It was stated that the Lymington Chapter No . 319 , was in abeyance , not having paid any dues since 1871 . The niinui' - books of the Chapter were signed by the ( irand Superintendent after P . C

Chapter had closed . The Principals and companions then adjourned to a banquet at the Guildhall Refectory , Bro . dowser catering excellently . The selection of Comp . P , Stopher , P . Z ., Ior so high an office in Prov . ( irand Chapter gave great satisfaction to Chapter No . 70 , 01 which he is the senior member . ' He joined it nearly 30 years ago , and has retained membership with honour to himself and advantage to the chapter .

Comp .
