C . ling ., D . P . G . M . Leicestershire and Rutland . After transacting the formal business , a novel and short

interesting feature was the reading of papers on questions relating to Masonic usages , customs , and symbolism prepared by the following brethren , viz .: Bro . J . j . W . Knowles , Stwd . 1007 , " Ihe openings of the Volume of the Sacred Law ; " Bro . A . Laurence , Org . 523 , "Symbolism of Masonic lodges ; " Bro . H . ( loodacre Marriott , D . W . H . VVhite , G . Sec , dated the 7 th Dec , 1 S 39 , with reference to the substitution of the generally used lantern for the W . M . ' s light , which latter should never be extinguished while the lodge remained open . An excellent repast was provided and toasts given , the gathering being the most successful in every respect ,

SIDCUP . —SVDNEY LODGE ( NO . 829 ) . —This recently-formed lodge of instruction , held at the Black Horse Hotel , had a most successful gathering on Tuesday , the 6 th instant . The room was crowded by more than 80 brethren , including many from the other lodges of north-west Ksnt who had received invitations—the lodges of Woolwich , New Cross , and Grays being well represented—in anticipation of hearing the working of the Fifteen Sections . This

was begun at 7 o ' clock and lasted three hours , being admirably performed by the brethren upon whom devolved the task . Bro . J . G . Milbourn , W . M . 13 , presided , assisted by Bros . E . C . Talbot , H , 1310 , S . VV ., and Carter , P . M . 8 jS , J . W . j Bro . G . B . Davies , I ' . M . 13 , being Preceptor , and Bro . G . Wade , 829 , 1178 , Secretary , The three lectures were most accurately rendered by the brelhren in the best possible manner , affording sincere pleasure to those

present . The brethren officiating were Bros . Gould , Grice , Akers , Lawson , Appleby , Marfleet , Dale , Milbourn , Talbot , Carter , and Lazarus . For so young a lodge the working of the Fifteen Sections—in which all brethren take snch interest—was highly "editable , and shows much future promise of distinction . The

judge has an energetic Secretary in Bro . Wade , who has secured the adhesion of many influential residents in the neighbourhood , and lhere is every probability that it may take high rank . Its members have obtained permission to present a memorial gift to 'he Grand Master , the Prince of VVales , in commemoration of his silver wedding .

Annual Supper Of The Rose Lodge Of Instruction, No. 1622.

ANNUAL SUPPER OF THE ROSE LODGE OF INSTRUCTION , No . 1622 .

The annual supper of the Rose Lodge of Instruction was held at the Stirling Castle Hotel , Camberwell , on Thursday evening , the ist inst ., under the presidency of Bro . W .

Cowley , P . M . 1559 , P . Z . 1275 , the popular W . M . of the mother lodge . The Stewards for the occasion were Bros . Dunn , J . W . 1622 ; H . Martin , J . D . 1622 ; Mole , W . M . 16 S 7 ; Penney , S . W . 1679 ; Rivers , J . D . 1772 ; Stone , 1641 , Stwd . 507 , Asst . Sec . ; and T , Grummant , P . M .,

Annual Supper Of The Rose Lodge Of Instruction, No. 1622.

Sec . ; and so well had they done their duty that the most successful meeting ever held in connection with this lodge of instruction was the result . The musical arrangements were admirably managed by Bro . Briant , 1641 . After doing ample justice to a substantial meal , the PRESIDENT ( Bro . Cowley ) proposed in very suitable terms the toast of "The Queen and the Craft , " which was very

loyally received . Then the PRESiDENTproposed "The M . W . G . M ., H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , K . G ., " saying that wherever his Royal Highness ' s name was known there was he respected . In proposing "The M . W . Pro G . M ., the Rt . Hon . the Earl of Carnarvon ; The R . W . Deputy G . M ., theRt . Hon . the Earl of Lathom ; and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " Bro . COWLEY said it was

needless for him to dilate upon the noble work done by these brethren , for every Mason knew and appreciated it . Bro . HILTON , P . M . 1622 , P . Z . 1275 , said , that , as Immediate Past President of this annual gathering , it fell to his lot to propose "The Health of Bro . Cowley , their President . " He did it with more pleasure as he had been many years very intimate with Bro . Cowley . It was a good

sign when a man like Bro . Cowley , who had been VV . M . of a lodge many years ago , made it his duty to attend lodges of instruction . He was to be found there week by Week , perfecting himself in the ritual , and preparing himself for the arduous duties which he was now called upon to perform as W . M . of 1622 . He knew that their able Preceptor , Bro . Rose , was able to teach him all the beautiful ceremonies

of the Order , and it was a gratification to Bro . Rose to witness the precision with which his pupils performed their allotted tasks . In reply , Bro . COWLEY said it was both a pleasure and a gratification to himself to be present , and to hear the toast so pleasantly proposed . He did not desire to be absent from the lodge , for he was much interested in its

success . He was glad to see such a multiplicity of brethren present ; many were old friends , and he could claim the acquaintance of almost every one . He wished to thank all for his cordial reception . Bro . COWLEY , in proposing the toast of " The Rose Lodge of Instruction , " gave a short history of the lodge from its foundation , commenting upon the times spent at

the King's Head , Walmer Castle , and its present meeting place . He was glad to notice how greatly the lodge was prospeiing , for there never seemed a dearth of new members . As they were all aware , such a lodge could not exist without a Preceptor , and Bro . Rose was certainly the best man under the sun who could be found to do those duties which fell upon a Preceptor . Those who did not know him

might believe that he had been a military man , so wtll did he put them through their facings . There could be no lodge found in which the work was done better . Bro . Rose was present in all weathers , and always ready on the stroke of the clock to begin his duties . Bro . ROSE said that he could not propeily respond to the toast , for he felt overcome with the kindness of the

brethren as shown to him that night . He felt it a pleasing duty to be able to impart Masor . ic knowledge to younger brethren . He would not say how many happy hours he had spent in the lodge , but he trusted that he might be able for many years to do the work . He wished also to express his thanks to others who contributed to the success of the lodge , especially Bro . Hilton , P . M ., who so kindly

took his place during his enforced absence . Bro . COWLEY in suitable terms proposed " The Visitors . " Bros . STAFFORD , BEAVER , and MORGAN responded . In proposing " The Treasurer and Secretary , " Bro . COWLEY said he need not praise the former ( himself ) , but he must say how glad he was that Bro . Grummant was their Secretary , for he loved his duties , was always present

made hosts of friends , but no enemies , and showed great steadiness of purpose in all his actions . They had been Masonically born together , and were firm friends . Bro . Grummant was of great assistance in the lodge , for he was always ready to answer any questions that were put to him . Their Assistant Secretary , Bro . Stone , was also an excellent worker .

_ Bro . GRUMMANT thanked those present for their appreciation of his services , which were willingly rendered . He was initiated on the same night as Bro . Cowley , and they had worked side by side ever since . He gave a few particulars of the past year ' s work . The lodge had been opened 48 times ; average attendance , 23 ; lowest attendance , o ; highest , 34 ; new members , 31 . Theinstallation

ceremony had been worked eight times ; the Fifteen Sections once . The attendance of P . M . ' s averaged 6 } , which was a very pleasing feature . Nearly seven guineas had been spent in relief during the past year from the lodge funds , and up to the present time their Charitable Association had sent nearly £ 700 to the Masonic Charities , and when completed would , he hoped , have sent over £ 1000 .

He was pleased with the results , and trusted long to pursue his duties . Bro . STONE responded , saying how delighted he was to do his little towards the success of the lodge . He announced that the Fifteen Sections would be worked on the 29 th inst . Other toasts followed , and a very happy evening was spent . The following contributed to the evening ' s enjoyment :

Bros . C . A . White , R . J . Voisey , P . M . ; W . Briant , Leonard , Hernaman , and Mr . Hazelgrove . Those present included Bros . W . Cowley , VV . M . 1622 ; Rose , P . M . ; Loader , P . M . ; Grummant , P . M ., Sec ; Garner , P . M . ; Hamlyn , P . M . ; Murche , P . M . ; Benedetti , P . M . ; Channon , P . M . ; Addington , P . M . ; Voisey ,

P . M . ; Mole , W . M . ; Hernaman , W . M . 1329 ; Kirby , Dunn , Von Holtorf , Pullen , Clapp , Towers , Woodwell , Jeffreys , Pethebridge , Cross , Earl , Meyer , Parr , Derham , Hilton , P . M . ; Martin , Dr . Webb , Gomm , Parkhouse , Latham , Eckersall , Woods , Stone , Thompson , Penney , Sowton , Currey , G . Davis , Whitehead , Briant , White , and Leonard .

The King of the Belgians visited the Prince and Princess of Wales at Marlborough House on Monday , and stayed to luncheon . In the evening the Prince accompanied by his sons , went to Victoria Station to take leave of his Majesty on his return to Brussels .

Bros , the Earl of Onslow , the Earl of Crawford and Balcarres , the Earl of Limerick , the Earl of Dunraven , and Lord Monkswell are among those appointed to serve on the Select Committee of the House of Lords to inquire into the sweating system at the East-end of London .

M . ; Voisey ,
