We are glad to find that our advice of last week has been followed , and that the Special General Meeting of the Governors and Subscribers of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution made short work of the insane proposal adopted some time ago by the Committee of

Management , that every brother—or , in the case of a widow , that her late husband—must have qualified as a Life Governor at least two years before presenting his petition , or must have subscribed one guinea a year for five consecutive years , in order to render him , or her , eligible as a candidate .

* * * Had this resolution been accepted by the Special Meeting in the first place , and then by Grand Lodge , the question confronting us in the immediate future

would have been not how shall we ever be able to accommodate all this large number of candidates , but how shall we find candidates to fill up all this large number of vacancies ? * * *

And from this state of things there could onl y be one step further . Without candidates we should be in a position to dispense with the Annual Festivals

and having duly provided means to satisfy such interests as exist already , it would remain for the proper official to shut up the offices of the Institution at Freemasons' Hall , and close the Institution at Croydon .

# # # This would certainly prove a most efficacious way of keeping the number of candidates within manageable compass . In less than 12 months we should have no

candidates beyond those already accepted , and it would not be very long before we should have no Institution . Happily , Wisdom has cried aloud in the streets , and for once in a way she has been listened to .

* * * But what could our good brother who proposed this plan for reducing the candidates have been thinking about ? In order to reduce the number , he

We are glad to find that our advice of last week has been followed , and that the Special General Meeting of the Governors and Subscribers of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution made short work of the insane proposal adopted some time ago by the Committee of

Management , that every brother—or , in the case of a widow , that her late husband—must have qualified as a Life Governor at least two years before presenting his petition , or must have subscribed one guinea a year for five consecutive years , in order to render him , or her , eligible as a candidate .

* * * Had this resolution been accepted by the Special Meeting in the first place , and then by Grand Lodge , the question confronting us in the immediate future

would have been not how shall we ever be able to accommodate all this large number of candidates , but how shall we find candidates to fill up all this large number of vacancies ? * * *

And from this state of things there could onl y be one step further . Without candidates we should be in a position to dispense with the Annual Festivals

and having duly provided means to satisfy such interests as exist already , it would remain for the proper official to shut up the offices of the Institution at Freemasons' Hall , and close the Institution at Croydon .

# # # This would certainly prove a most efficacious way of keeping the number of candidates within manageable compass . In less than 12 months we should have no

candidates beyond those already accepted , and it would not be very long before we should have no Institution . Happily , Wisdom has cried aloud in the streets , and for once in a way she has been listened to .

* * * But what could our good brother who proposed this plan for reducing the candidates have been thinking about ? In order to reduce the number , he
