Consecration Of The Charles Blakeway Lodge, No. 2451, Engeoro, Tembuland.

CONSECRATION OF THE CHARLES BLAKEWAY LODGE , No . 2451 , ENGEORO , TEMBULAND .

This interesting function was performed by Bro . C . H . Bate , P . M ., P . D . G . W . ( acting on behalf of the D . G . M . of the Eastern Division , vvho vvas unable to attend personally ) , on Friday , the 12 th May , having specially come from Barkley East for that purpose .

The brethren and visitors assembled at the New Temple , and after being formed into a group and photographed , vvere ranged into procession , and marched , wearing their regalia , to church , to attend Divine Service at St . Cyprian ' s , where a very striking and able sermon was preached by the Rev . Canon Waters , of All Saint ' s Mission . Quite a large crowd

turned out to see the Masons and their regalia , and there is not the sli ghtest doubt , that after listening to the excellent discourse of the reverend preacher , many vvho previously ( through ignorance , of course ) condemned the Order , vvere pleased to see us in quite a different light .

Divine service over , the brethren reformed procession and returned to the Temple , and adjourned from labour to refreshment for 10 minutes , during which time the building , and its appurtenances vvas inspected b y the ladies and others .

At the expiration of the 10 minutes , labour vvas resumed , when the ceremony of consecrating the Temple and forming the brethren into a regular lod ge vvas most ably performed by the Consecrating Officer . Bro . BATK , during the ceremony , delivered an oration on the subject of " Freemasonry , " tracing its early history vvith marked ability , and for a period of about

half an hour , was listened to vvith silent attention , pleasure and profit being the result . Bro . Bate very ably represented the D . G . M ., who is to be congratulated on having secured the services of so eliicient and painstaking a Deputy , and it is felt that his visit to Engeobo will not be speedily forgotten . The consecration and dedication ceremony over , Bro .

J W . Heathcote , P . M ., vvas installed in the chair of K . S ., and immediately proceeded to invest the following brethren as his ofiicers for the year : Bros . A . H . Stanford , S . W . ; W . J . Clarke , J . W . j O . P . Webb , Treas . ; E . H . Cockson , Sec ; John Phillips , S . D . ; James Phillips , J . D . ; Jas . F . M . Clarke , I . G . j Joseph Phillips and VV . King , Stwds ; and A . T . W . Phillips , Tyler .

1 he lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to Heath ' s Hotel for the purpose of refreshment . The few visiting brethren present vvere heartily welcomed by the brethren of the new lod ge , and they carry back vvith them to their homes bri ght and present recollections both of the interesting ceremony they were privileged to witness as well as the brotherl y

love and harmony vvhich prevailed throughout . Many other brethren and lodges in different parts sent apologies regretting their inability to attend , which , owing tothe difficulty of access , and bad roads in particular to Engeobo , is not to be wondered at . At the banquet the usual toasts vvere gi / en and responded to with many brilliant speeches , and several

members added to the conviviality of the evening b y rendering music and song , especially among these might be mentioned l . iro . Holmes , of Barkley East , who vvith his numerous comic songs brought down the house , also Bro . J . VV . Johnston , of Umtata , who added much to the success of the singing by his able accompaniments on the piano . The banquet reflected great credit on Mrs . Heath

who , in the absence of her husband , undertook the arduous duty of catering for so many . Considerable prosperity is prophesied for the new lodge , situated as it is in the centre of the native territories , and on the day of installation five applications for initiation vvere received . The formation of this lodge is another event marking the march of civilisation in these territ . irii __ i .

The formation of this lodge is another event marking the march of civilisation in these territ . irii __ i .
