SHRIEVALTY ELECTION . '"TO THE LIVERYMEN OF THE *** CITY OF LONDON . Mv LORDS AND GENTLEMEN , The many promises of support 1 have received , including a large number of spontaneous offers from brother Liverymen , more than justify my fulfilment of the pledge 1 Kave as far back as J ANUARY nth , 1 S 93 , when I then declared my intention to place my services at your disposal for the Shrievalty on Midsummer Day next . Many changes have taken place since then , but the fact remains , and has not been denied , that I WAS THE FIRST CANDIDATE IN THE FIELD . In consequence of many erroneous rumours which have becn circulated vvith reference to my politics , I think it desirable to state emphatically , that although a Liberal Prior to the introduction of the Home Rule Bill , I am now a Liberal Unionist . If elected by you , my time will be entirely and ungrudgingly bestowed , and every opportunity embraced to faithfully discharge thc religious , charitable , and hospitable duties vvhich , to my mind , are inseparable from thc ollice . I venture to ask all those who have so kindly pledged themselves to support my candidature , to attend at the meeting of Common Hall on Midsummer Day next to aid mc at the show of hands , and , if necessary , at the subsequent poll . Masonic Notes .
Exception has been taken to sundry of thc criticisms contained in our article of the 3 rd instant on the "Revised Code of Laws for the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys . " Thus as regards our remarks re thc assignment of the rank of ex-officio Patron instead of
Vice-President to the Pro Grand Master and Deputy Grand Master , Bro . Secretary McLeod informs us that these cases never have carried , and it is not intended to carry , with it votes . There is nothing in the existing or proposed laws to show this , and perhaps it would be
as well to insert the necessary words to make thia clear , but it is satisfactory to know that in thc matter of voles the Grand Master , as President ol the Institution , will not be at a disadvantage , as wo suggested .
As regards the provision made in proposed Law XXIX , that " in default of any direction , the Secretary for thc time being shall be entitled to vote , " it has been pointed out to us that the addition lias been made advisedly . Many votes are now lost because they arc
addressed to the lodge quarters , but the Secretary ' s private address is known , or can easily be ascertained , and it is expected that by adopting this provision , thc number of votes hitherto lost ,. strayed , or miscarried ,
will be appreciably diminished . This places quite a different complexion on the proposed law , indeed , wc had an illustration of the desirability of such a change being made as recently as Friday of last week .
# # # Between 30 and 40 votes for thc Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , which had been addressed , as usual , to the headquarters of a lodge meeting not 100 miles from Freemasons' Hall , notwithstanding that
every inquiry was made for them , vvere not forthcoming . A fortnight after the election these votes turned up among other votes sent to a lodge meeting at thc same quarters . This is , of course , very discreditable to the management of the house and fully justifies the proposed addition .
It is satisfactory lo know that the Board of Stewards for the approaching Festival of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys already numbers upwards of 500
brethren . This is , indeed , good news , and if only thc Returns correspond in value vvith the strength of thc Board , the total obtained this year will be a large one . We trust this may turn out to be the case .
" Our Boys" visited thc Zoo on Ihursday last , being invited to spend a " happy day . " by Bro . George E . Fairchild , member of thc Board of Management . * * # Just upon going to press we hear that the Cheshire brethren on Thursday last held the first festival of thc
Masonic Benevolent Institution recently formed in that Province . The meeting was largely attended , and was presided over by Lord Egerton of Talton . The result of the festival has not transpired , but we believe about , 63000 was subscribed .
