time with post-prandial speeches . They vvere all thankful for the kind reception accorded them , and for the generous hospitality at the festive board . He had one feeling of regret that lie did not attend a little earlier in lodge , for the working vvas so exceedingly good , both in the initiation and installation ceremonies , that he felt he lost a great treat by being late . He hoped they would not think him impertinent if he congratulated them on their selection of a Master
for the coming year . He thought they had secured the services of one who would prove himself a genial companion . He again thanked them on behalf of the Grand Officers forthe kind manner in which they had been received and for the opportunity of spending a pleasant and interesting evening . Bro . E . Letchworth , G . Sec , also replied . He said that in the position he had occupied for some iG monthshe had
, been brought very intimately in connection vvith not only the Pro Grand Master and the Deputy Grand Master , but all the Grand Officers , and he could assure them there vvere no two brethren who took a keener interest in the Craft than the Earl of Lathom and the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe . He vvas happy to say the doctors pronounced the Earl of Lathom out of danger , and hoped he would in a short time be restored to good health . There was a
general consensus of opinion that the late additions to Grand Orficers had met with approval . It had been a great pleasure to him to meet so many brethren hailing from a country , the lodges of vvhich the Grand Lodge of England vvas in perfect accord vvith , and he trusted the happy relations would long continue . Bro . Dr . J . J . Wedgwood , P . M ., said he had a very pleasing duty to perform in proposing " The Health of
their W . M . "—a man vvho had travelled all over the world , a man of deep penetration and large efforts . He asked the brethren to cordially drink the toast , for as the representative of the Columbia Lodge , Bro . Col . North would do justice to the position he occupied , and they would never regret having placed such a Master in the chaic . Bro . Col . J . T . North , W . M ., thanked them for the kind way in vvhich they responded to the toast of their
newlyinstalled W . M . He vvas quite a novice in Masonry as regards their working in England , but he vvas satisfied he should make himself a very apt scholar . In his travelling abroad , whenever a Mason came to them in distress , that man vvas at once looked after . He could go back to his own dining room , where a seafaring man came to him , and finding him to be a Mason , he at once asked him to sit down and dine vvith them , much to the surprise of the ladies and gentlemen
present . That man , who was then a chief officer , had now been a captain of a sailing vessel for many years . His vvas the first time he had had the honour and pleasure of being elected to office by the brethren of the Columbia Lodge , and he thanked them all for it . He did not know what he could do for the members in return . Those who could help
others in distress should do so , and , as some years ago he subscribed £ 50 to the Girls' School , and that was the first occasion in his life he had been Master of a lodge , he should like to give £ 50 to the Boys' School . He had also to thank the worthy brethren who had honoured him with their company that night .
The Worshipful Master then gave " Thc Installing Master . " He said they all knew what an effect and what impression the ceremony made upon them , and especially the younger brethren . He himself felt it very acutely . He had never heard during his existence as a Mason such grand remarks emanate from a brother . How or why he could not say , but he never felt anything so effective as the installation ceremony that evening . Hc would therefore
ask them to heartily drink Bro . Wellcome ' s health . Bro . H . S . Wellcome , P . M ., S . W ., expressed his thanks for the kind reference made to his efforts . He vvas deepl y gratified if that ceremony had impressed itself upon their hearts . It was such a beautiful ceremony that they ought all to take it to heart , for a better code no man could have in his daily life . He had particular difficulty in performing the ceremony after the masterly work of Bro . Sudlow ,
vvhich vvas such a wondertul study tor them . In a few days the W . M . vvas returning to his homeland , America , and in representing that lodge he vvas sure Colonel North would find a very hearty hand of fellowship extended , and would doubtless make the Columbia Lodge felt and known . " The Initiate" having been honoured , Thc Worshi p ful Master said he vvas sure the brethren would excuse his leaving them , as he bad a worthy
representative in Bro . Wedgwood . He thanked them all for their assistance , and assured them that now lie vvas W . M . of a Masonic lodge for the first time , it would be his duty and pleasure to do what he possibly could for all the brethren . "The Visitors" was next given , coupled vvith the names of Bros . Polland , P . D . S . G . W . Bombay ; Lewis Thomas .
P . A . G . D . C . ; and Dr . Zacharie , P . G . M . California . " The Officers " and the Tyler ' s toast closed the pleasant proceedings . The following artistes assisted in an exceptionally good selection of music : Bros . Chevalier Emil Bach ( piano ) , Tivadar Nachez ( violin ) , Robert Grice , E . Wareham and Geo . Pritchard .

time with post-prandial speeches .
Pritchard .
