General Lord Wolseley presided at a conference held at the Colonial and Indian Exhibition , on Monday , when Sir R . Biddulph read a highly instructive

paper on " Cyprus . Bro . Sir E . B . and Lad y Ermyntrude Malet arrived at their residence in Eaton-square from Berlin on Saturday last , Bro . Sir E . Malet having obtained leave of absence from his post . Bro . \ V . A . Burdett-Coutts , ML . P ., presided last week at the fourth annual festival of the Tailors' Benevolent

Institution , subscriptions being announced during the evening to the extent of £ 754 . We are g lad to hear that Bro . Earl Granville has so far made satisfactory progress towards recovery from his recent severe illness that he was able to tak '* a carriage drive on Sunday evening for the first time during five weeks .

Bro . the Lord Mayor and the Lady Mayoress , Bros . Alderman and Sheriff Evans and Sheriff Clarke , and Bro . Ear ! and Countess Cowper vvere present vvhen the Princess Christian laid the foundation stone of the Finsbury and Shoreditch Polytechnic in Appold-street , Finsbury-square , on Saturday last .

Tyssen-Amherst , M . P ., were among the exhibitors at the Royal Agricultural Society ' s Annual Show at Norwich during the present week . The Prince and Princess of Wales , accompanied

by their three daughters , left Marlborough House for Sandringham , where they were to remain during the week and dispense hospitality to a succession of guests in connection with the annual exhibition of the Royal Agricultural Society at Norwich . The probable date of the grand naval review , which will take place off Spithead , in honour of our Colonial and Indian visitors , is Monday , the 26 th inst ., and a meeting vvas held at the official residence of Bro . Admiral Sir George Willis at Portsmouth on Monday , when the captains of her Majesty ' s ships met for the purpose of concerting the arrangements for the occasion .

Bro . H . Baldwin , P . M ., P . P . G . S . B . Middlesex , presided at the annual dinner of the employes of Messrs . Hudson and Kearns , manufacturing stationers , held at Bro . Dorling's very spacious hotel , at Walton-on-the-Naze , on Saturday , the ioth instant . The dinner was excellently served under the personal superintendence of Bro . and Mrs . Dorling , the viands , wines , cigars , & c , being of the very best quality . The whole proceedings

passed off vvith the greatest eclat in charming weather . Bro . H . Squire , Chairman of the Library Committee of the Corporation of London , presided at the dinner given by that body at the Albion Tavern , Aldersgatestreet , on Monday evening , to commemorate thc inauguration of the Guildhall Art Gallery . The guests included Bros , the Lord Mayor , the Sheriffs of London and Middlesex , Sir F . Leighton , P . R . A ., Alderman Sir R . N . Fowler , Bart ., M . P ., Sir P . Cunliffe-Ovven , and E . Parmelee , who was elected in November , iSfG , and has been annually re-elected ever since , Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of Colorado . Bro . Mapleson , among the artistes giving their services being Madame Patti , who vvas to make her only appearance this season on the London boards .

The Prince and Princess of Wales , accompanied by other members of the Royal Family , and attended by the Great Officers of State and members of the Queen ' s household , entered the Saloon about 11 p . m ., shortl y after which dancing commenced . There vvas a large and representative number of brethren present . Messrs . South and Evered have just returned to

town after a most successful tour to fulfil their society at home" engagements , at which they are most popular . Their only public appearance this season takes place at the Westminster Town Hall , on Monday , the igth inst ., under very distinguished patronage , including the Baroness Burdett-Coutts , who takes a great interest in their proceedings . The proceeds of the evening the artists will hand to the Masonic Charities , and this excellent object , in conjunction vvith their entertainment , should command a crowded attendance . *

The Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M ., on the recommendation of the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe , Prov . G . M ., has granted a warrant for the Cothele Lodge , Calstock , the number being 2166 . This raises the total in the province to thirty lodges , and will enable the Prov . G . M . to appoint four Prov . Grand Deacons , instead of two as heretofore , and alfo a D puty Prov . G . D . C . These additional offices are allowed under the new regulations for

aU provinces consisting of thirty or more lodges , and as there are nearly 1500 subscribing members in Cornwall , the extra appointments will be most acceptable . A concert vvas given in the Holborn Town Hall on the evening of Thursday , the Sth inst ., b y the pupils of the Guilford High School for Girls , 17 , Guilford-street , Russell-square , the distribution of prizes to the girls by Mrs . H . L . W . Lawson , wife of Mr . II . L , W . Lawson ,

M . P ., being included in the programme . The selection of pieces , both vocal and instrumental , had been made with great judgment , and the performances evinced gieat ability and admirable training , a pianoforte duet by two little girls , aged 6 and 4 respectively , a quartette on two pianos , a trio ( piano ) , an organ solo , and a violin solo being the most successful numbers . Among the recipients

of prizes was Miss Evelyn Goodinge , a daughter of Bro . J . B . Goodinge , to whom were awarded three , making , with the six she has won in past years , a total of nine awards . Such a continuance of success betokens steady application as well as ability on the part of the young lady , and must be extremely , gratifying to Bro . and Mrs . Goodinge .

Earl Amherst has decided that the annual meeting of the Prov . Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Freemasons of Kent , shall be held at Canterbury , on the 29 th inst .

Broo '/ .-man , the late Chairman of the Corporation School Committee , in recognition of the services he had rendered in that capacity both to the School particularly and tho Corporation generally . The London and North Western Railway have issued their usual Tourist Programmes for the current season . They contain , as usual , all thc necessary information as to the service of trains , thc tariff of charges , the arrangements vvith other Railway systems , and the various Steam Packet and other services which work vvith them ; and , in addition to this , there is a mass of descriptive matter relating

to the chief places of resort in the United Kingdom and elsewhere vvhich are accessible by means of the L . & N . VV . R . We shall take the opportunity of referring to these at greater length next week , but , in the meantime , it will probably suffice if vve state that the Company appears to have laid itself out as usual , so as to minister to the requirements and especially to the comfort and convenience of the travelling public , while thc programmes appear to have been compiled with even more than their usual care and accuracy .
