LEWISES AND PRIORITY . To the Editor of the "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , Let me mention , as bearing out the statement that a Lewis , when presenting himself with other candidates for initiation , can claim priority , that at the banquet following the installation of Bro . G . S . Recknell as VV . M . of the Temple Bar Lodge , No . 172 S , Bro . Bush , I . P . M ., in

proposing the toast of " The W . M ., " stated that at the lirst meeiing of the lodge after its consecration Bro . Rtcknell was a candidate for initiation , and that he ( Bro . Bush ) " acted on that occasion as J . VV ., " when " Bio . HccUnell , being the son of a Mason , claiinrd priority of the other lour candidates , and was thus the lirst initiate in the lod ^ e . " Here , then , we have a case derived from the present tune , in which a Lewis claimed and was allowed priority in

initiation over the other candidates , while in the report in the Freemason of the 24 th January , 1 SS 5 , from which 1 have quoted the circumstances as above , Bro . Recknell is described as " theson of a Mason "—that is , a " Lewis "but without any qualification a » to the rank of his father in Masonry—Master Mason or not—or whether he himself

was born before or subsequ . nt lo his father's initiation . Let me add that Bro . l '" i nn , President of the Board of General Purposes , was present at the meeting referred to , and , so far as your report goes , does not seem to have questioned the justice or propriety of Bro . Bush ' s description . —Yours fraternally , L . L .

ALLIANCE LODGE ( No . 1 S 27 ) . —A meeting of this lodge was held at the Guildhall Tavern , on Wednesday evening , the 7 th inst ,, under the presidency of tlio W . M ., Bro . Henry Wright . In the course of the evening the several ceremonies connected with the Order were admirably performed by the W . M ., and two brethren were passed and raised for Ihe convenience of the VV . M . of another lodge . TheW . M ., who is an enthusiastic worker

in Masonry , gave the explanations and lectures connected with the several Degrees in a most efficient and instructive manner . This is the first occasion on which these explanations have been given in the lodge , and they were listened to with extreme interest and pleasure by the members . Ihe S . W ., Bro . J . Perkins , C . C , was unanimou-ly elected VV . M . for the year ensuing , and a handsome Past Master ' s jewel was unanimously voted to the W . M ., Bro . Henry

Wright , for the able manner in which he fulfilled the duties during the year . Bro . Pawley was re-elected Treasurer , and Bro . Lovell was appointed Tyler . Subsequently the members and guests dined together , and these included Bros . J . Perkins , b . W . j Pawley , Treas . ; J . C . Whiddington , F . A . Jewson , L . F . Littell , Col . Se » cll , C . VV . Bowley , W . Roheits , E . T . R . Wylde , H . C Ewer , P . F . Wallace , T . Minstrel , J . Sawyer , E . Tirry , VV .

Matthews , VV . Haynes , E . Stilwell , Oscar 'limine , Lieut .-Col . Godfrey , and many others . The usual loyal and Craft toasts were given , and the W . M ., in giving "The Grand Officers , " remarked upon the extraordinary manner in which lhat lodge was favoured by ths large number of Grand Ofiicers which they numbered arron ^ the members of the lodge . It was with very great pleasure indeed , that he associated with the toast the

name of their dear old friend , Bro . Littell , who ably followed their good and great friend , the Town Clerk , Bro . Sir J . B . Monckton , who was their first Master in the chair . Bro . L . F . Littell replied in suitable term-:, slating the great amount of interest nhich was shown by the Grand Officers . Before he sat down it was his privilege to propose " The Health of thcr Worshipful Master , " and referred to the great services of their VVorshipfuI Master . That

evening they had heard in their lodge that which they had never heard before—a lecture upon many things which interested them exceedingly in the lodge . The Worshipful Master deserved their thanks for the admirable manner in which he had served the office of Master . The Worshipful Master , responding , thanked the members for the kind and cordial reception they had given to the toast . He had tried to uphold the prestige which the

lodge had gained by his predecessors , and he was pleased to think that he had in some way succeeded . He hael always taken an independent position , and he was glad to find that he was so well supported , not only by the officers he had chosen at the commencement of his year of ofiice , but by the members generally . Before he sat down he should ask them to drink "The Health of the Past Masters , " and he should couple with the toast the name of their friend , Col .

Sewell , who was distinguished above all their Past Masters in having served the office of VV . M . for iS months , instead of 12 months . A great number of members joined during that period , and Col . Setvell well performed the duties of his office . Col . Sewell said that when he reflected upon the number and influence of the Past Masters of the Alliance Lodge ,

men who werc so well and so highly distinguished in the Craft , he felt quite unable to reply properly to that toast . He vvas , however , quite sure that they would be pleased to hear that they had been so kindly remembered . The many avocations in which they were engaged did not enable them to attend the lodge constantly and regularly . They were most hard-working members of the Craft—they
