The lirst ladies' night ever held in Eastbourne in connection with Freemasonry took place on Tuesday , the 15 th ult ., at thc Queen ' s Hotel , and thc success which attended the meeting will , without doubt , lead to the experiment being tried again at some future time . The meeting was a " Lodge of Emergency , " under petition . The W . M ., ollicers , and brethren assembled at 6 . 30 p . m ., when the lodge was opened , thc candidate , Mr . H . A . May wc all be spared to offer up our most grateful thanks on thc 22 nd June for having been blessed with the greatest Sovereign in the world's history . most cordial welcome inside the lodge . The W . M ., on behalf of the lodge , stated lhat he hoped the innovation of inviting ladies might be repeated at some future lime . Brethren , in submitting this toast I will couple the names of Bro . Captain Eranklyn , R . E ., to respond for thc ladies , and Bro . J . Welch , W . M . 1110 , on behalf of Ihe visiting brethren . The toast was received with the greatest enthusiasm .

Bro . Capt . I-RA . NKI . YN , R . E ., then replied for the ladies . He said : Worshipful Master and brethren , you have done me the honour to call upon me to reply on behalf of the ladies . On their behalf , allow me to thank you first for your kindness in inviting them to join you at thc festive board , and , secondly , for the kind and hearty manner in which you have drunk their health . I am sure 1 am giving utterance to ( heir wishes when I say they hope it will not be the last time ; that , now the custom has been once inaugurated in Eastbourne , many more of

Of course , that . is a matter beyond us at present , but wc can never tell what the future might hold in store for us as a surprise . 1 believe that in some foreign countries they have societies of women , which societies are more or less closely allied with Masonry , though we all know there arc no women Masons in existence . Special permission having been obtained , the party were permitted to

enter the Duke ' s private garden , and enjoyed a plentiful supply of strawberries and cream , the former supplied by the Worshipful Master and the latter by Bro Roper . There was also a good supply of other light refreshments , which thc party thoroughly enjoyed . This being over , The WoRsiiii'TULi . MASTER requested the company to move towards thc

Miss Emily Davies ( Mrs . Elam ) sang the solo "God save the Queen , " the whole company joining heartily in thc chorus . In proposing the toast of " The Ladies , " thc W . M . said that from his point of view , this toast was not one whit less important than the one he had just proposed ; it was the toast of the Queens of our hearts and homes —the ladies . He was certain that they took a great deal of interest in Masonry , especially since thc ladies' nights and summer outings had become so popular , and if any brother had

any doubt on that point , he ( the W . M . ) would advise them to take a Stewardship next year for the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , he would there find a considerable number of ladies acting as Stewards also wearing that splendid jewel they are all so proud of . The ladies had shared in our troubles and sickness and he thought they might be trusted to join occasionally in our festive gatherings , and he trusted the ladies would always favour them with their presence at these annual outings . '

The toast having been drunk with enthusiasm , was responded to by Bro . KV . DAVIES in a pleasing manner , Bro . INUEK , [ . P . M ., next proposed " The Worshipful Master , " who , he said , had done everything thai a Master could do for thc lodge's popularity and for the ladies' nights and summer outings . They were indebted to the W . M . for the
