The brethren of Devonshire had all vied with one another in extending to him such fraternal goodwill that he would carry with him to his Hungarian home a pleasant recollection of his visit to England .

The Grand Officers having entered in procession , the CONSECRATING OFFICER addressing the brethren said it was nowlnearly five years since this Orderwasintroduced into England , and since then it had made remarkable progress . It inculcated very excellent and valuable precepts of brotherly love and of assistance to brethren

requiring it , and although there were many Masonic bodies in England , yet they did not clash with each other , and there was no doubt room for the Order of the Secret Monitor . It had been joined by a large number of Masons , and they might safely predict that it would go on and prosper . The conclave they were

about to inaugurate was No . 20 , showing that the Order had progressed in a practical manner during the last five years . They had met that day to give effect to the charter issued , and to constitute the conclave according to the forms of the Order . The ceremony was then proceeded with , and the

conclave duly dedicated and constituted in solemn form . Bro . J . W . P . Brickwood was installed as Supreme Ruler by Bro . J . J . Pakes , and the rank of P . S . R . was conferred upon Bro . J . P . Horner , P . G . M . Louisiana , by sanction of the G . S . R .

The Grand Officers present were elected honorary members , a compliment which was suitably acknowledged by Bro . ZACHARIE , G . S . R . A large number of propositions for induction were announced , and the conclave was closed . After banquet , the usual loyal toasts were first

honoured . Bro . J . W . P . BRICKWOOD , S . R ., then proposed " The M . W . G . Supreme Ruler , Bro . Zacharie . " He said he did not wish to be charged with adulation , but his admiration for the G . S . R . was unbounded when he considered that that brother came from the West possessed of a

certain knowledge which he made it his life ' s business to disseminate . What they admired connected with the character of the G . S . R . was his undaunted pluck and perseverance , his powers of organisation , and the magnetic influence by which he brought together under his power the most distinguished members of

Freemasonry . If the brethren looked at the Book of Constitutions of the Order they would find that the flower of Freemasonry was concentrated under its banner , and they had to thank the G . S . R . for the exertion and the extraordinary power he must possess to bring into such a state of perfection the Order of

the Secret Monitor . They were highly honoured by his presence , and hoped to be again honoured at their next meeting in December . Although the conclave was in its infancy , he hoped to be able to assure the G . S . R . that the honour done them was thoroughly appreciated by the working of the conclave—by the

influence they would exert in that part of the town . Bro . I . ZACHARIE , G . S . R ., returned thanks , and said he did not deserve the praise bestowed upon him . There was always something behind the scenes , and he would tell them that with regard to the organisation of the Order there were two brethren present—Bros .

Colonel Shadwell H . Clerke and Lewis Thomas—who had in fact done more than he had in this direction . Unless he had been backed up by such brethren the organisation would have gone to the ground long ago . Bro . Colonel Shadwell H . Clerke , who had been a Secret Monitor for over 30 years , brought the bone and sinew of the Masonic Order into their

ranks , and a very great portion of the success was therefore due to him . The Order had gone upon its own merits , being founded upon the true princip les of Masonry , and had filled up a gap , particularly in England , which nothing else could have done . They did not take anything from other Degrees , but stood

on their own ground . It was a pleasure to all the Grand Officers to be present that day for several reasons . First , to know their Order was progressing ; second , to attend a conclave named after Bro . Major Dunbar , who had done a great deal in establishing one of their most prosperous conclaves ; and , thirdly ,

to have the pleasure of seeing Bro . Colonel Clerke , who kindly consented to perform the ceremony . He wished to propose the health of one whom he was sure they would receive with pleasure—it was " The Health of the Supreme Ruler , " and as Bro . Brickwood had been the founder of the first conclave in the East of London he had thought it his duty to confer a little with

distinction upon that brother by investing him the collar of P . G . C . He again thanked the brethren and assured them that anything he could do for this conclave they could rely upon him to do to any degree . Bro . J . W . P . Brickwood , S . R ., said he was quit 6 unprepared to receive this mark of favour from the G . S . R ., but he hoped his services and conduct would justify the honour conferred . Nothing should be wanting on his part to make this conclave a success .
