People . He vvas trying to remember what W . M . it was who went through the chair but did not stand as Steward for one of the Institutions , but could not think of a single instance , and hoped it vvould be a long time before the chair vvas occupied by one who could not serve as Steward . This lodge came out last year to support the chairman whose name it bore , and was the highest in amount , not

only in their province but of about 18 or 20 . The Institutions were doing good work and deserved the best support . He generally turned to two books to support him in his remarks . The first was the Grand Old Book and the other Shakespeare , who wrote " Tis not enough to help the feeble up , but to support him after . " That was what they were trying to do in the Royal Masonic Benevolent

Institution . There vvas a little affair being started in connection with the Iodge , in which they were following the examples of other lodges , that of starting a Benevolent Association , If the members joined that Association they vvould very soon find they vvere Life Governors of one or more of the Institutions . He hoped they vvould answer this according to their conscience and had no doubt the list of the W . M .

would be such that they would be as proud of the lodge in February next as they had been in times past . " The Visitors " was next given in cordial terms , Bros . Porter , Walker , Pellatt , and Wigley being coupled to reply . " The Past Masters " and " The Officers " having been duly honoured , the Tyler's toast brought a pleasant evening to a close .

M . 1511 , P . P . G . D . ( the well known Masonic numismatist . ) Letters expressing regret at inability to attend vvere received from , amongst others , Bros . Tew , P . G . D . Eng .,

Prov . G . M . ; Alderson , P . A . G . Sec . ; and G . D . Kay , P . M ., P . P . G . D . In the course of the evening Bro . Watson received congratulatory telegrams from Bros . W . J . Hughan , P . G . D . of England ( the celebrated Masonic author ); Kelly , P . G . G . M . Leicestershire and Rutland ; George Kenning ( the celebrated Masonic publisher ); W . J . Lane ( the Masonic authority ); the

W . M . and I . P . M . of 2076 ; Bros . Speth , Sec . 2076 ; Atherton , and many others . The W . M . then addressed the brethren as follows : I have great gratification in presenting to a brother , who has notified his intention of resigning the lodge in consequence of his removal to London , a slight token of our regret at parting vvith him . I mean our esteemed Bro . Samuel

Scott Young . He has done so much for Prudence Lodge , and vve so thoroughly appreciate his services , that , as soon as we knew he was leaving , a subscription vvas started in the lodge , which has been almost universally responded to . I have now the great gratification in presenting this jewel , on behalf of the members of the lodge , Bro . Young , vvhich I now pin on your breast . It is an indication not

only oi the satisfaction with vvhich the brethren have noted the ability with which you have served the lodge as Secretary , but also as a slight mark of esteem for you as a brother , for your courteous conduct , and the able manner in vvhich you have filled every office that has been allotted to you . VVe are anxious that you should not leave this lodge without taking vvith you some little material token of our regard for you . I hope you will not mark that

jewel merely for its intrinsic value , but that it will be for all time a token of remembrance of a happy connection with this lodge , and that whenever you look upon it , it will bring back to your memory very happy remembrances of us all . Bro . Scott Young , vvho spoke with much feeling , assured the brethren that their gift vvas most highly prized , and that it vvould serve to remind him of very many happy hours spent in Lodge Prudence .

The VVorshipfuI Master then said : Before I quit this chair and hand over the gavel to the Installing Master , I feel I must say a word publicly , not only in acknowledgment of the services rendered to me by my officers , but also for the marked ability vvith vvhich you have served me throughout the year . I also wish to acknowledge the great kindness which all the brethren have exhibited towards me . I am most thankful to feel that I quit this chair leaving the

lodgo in that state of harmony in vvhich I found it . 1 feel satisfied that if the lodge has not been improved during my Mastership , at any rate it has lost nothing by it . Brethren , I respectfully offer you my farewell , and call upon the Past Grand Chaplain of England ( Bro . Dr . Smyth ) to take up the duties ot Installing Master . Bro . Watson was then presented for installation by the D . P . G . M . of West Yorks ( Bro . Henry Smith ) , and Bro . Monckman , P . M ., P . P . G . D . C , and duly obligated . A

large and distinguished Board of Past Masters vvas afterwards formed , and the ceremony was completed ; Bro . Dr . Smyth performing the onerous but congenial duties which fell to his lot to the admiration of all present . The musical portion of the ceremony was under the direction of Bro . Townsend , P . M ., P . P . G . Org . Bro . Watson then invested his officers as follows ,

addressing to each suitable words of congratulation and advice : Bros . Charles Middleton , S . W . ; John James Fretwell , J . W . ; Rev . J . H . Evans , Chap . ; Robert Abbott , Treas . ; Tom Atkinson , Sec . ; Robert Craig , P . M . 304 , P . P . G . D ., Preceptor ; Arthur Butterworth , S . D . ; Benjamin Sykes Bailey , J . D . ; Tudor Trevor , I . P . M ., D . C ; L . Howarth , I . G . ; R . A . Smithson , Asst . Sec . ; C Cryer and Edwd .

Bentley , Stewards ; Harris Begbie Abbott , Asst . Steward and Musical Librarian ; G . W . Pratt , Org . ; and Samuel Barrand , Tyler . The W . M ., as Charity representative of the lodge , reported that , so far as Lodge Prudence vvas concerned , it had been a very successful year . To the Girls' School 120 guineas had been sent up , and an endowment of 10 guineas to the Old Women's Institution .

On the motion of Bro . Dr . Smyth , seconded by Bro . Tudor Trevor , I . P . M ., Bro . Watson was re-elected Charity representative ; whilst the I . P . M . and the S . W . were appointed as representatives of the Iodge on the local Charity . Bro . Watson then presented to Bto . Trevor a handsome P . M . 's jewel of the lodge pattern , and , in doing so ,

assured that brother that he possessed the admiration and affection of every brother in the lodge . He hoped Bro Trevor would live long to wear it , and that they would often see it on his breast in that lodge . He might depend upon it that he vvas as near to the hearts of the brethren as that jewel vvas to his own . Bro . Henry Smith , D . P . G . M ., in the regrettable , but

unavoidable , absence of the Prov . G . M ., Bro . Tew , then , amid the applause of the brethren , pinned the jewel on Bro . Trevor s breast . He said : Bro . Tew , like myself , has watched the progress of this lodge with very great interest . He has , as you know , been present on several occasions , and I know he fully intended to be here to-day , not only as a matter of pleasing duty , but with the view

of saying how pleased he was at the progress the lodge has made . VVe have watched it with very great interest , and I am proud to say that it is in an exceedingly flourishing condition . When I came here first , you had 15 members , the second time you had 24 , and now you have 34 ; and I am sure the class of brethren you have introduced into Masonry has been of a character to reflect great credit on

your choice . I am proud , Bro . Trevor , to have been deputed by your brethren to pin this well-deserved jewel on your breast . Bro . Trevorsaid : The least said thesoonest mended on an occasion like this , vvhen one's language is utterly inadequate to express one's feelings . I am sure you will believe me vvhen r say that I receive your present not only vvith the

sincere thanks which are due to me , but that it shall be placed among my possessions to last for all time as a fitting token of your kindly appreciation , your affection , an J your regard . The remainder of the business having been disposed of , the lodge was closed amid a perfect volley of " Hearty good wishes . "

An adjournment vvas then made to the banqueting hall , where a sumptuous meal vvas awaiting the brethren . After dinner , the usual Masonic toasts vvere duly honoured , after which Bro . Trevor proposed " The Health of the Newly-installed W . M . " He said : You , Bro . Watson , who have just been installed are no tyro in the Masonic art , for you vvere

installed W . M . of your old lodge ( Fidelity ) 16 years ago . VVhen 1 remember not merely the local reputation , but the provincial , nay , the almost world-wide , reputation you possess as a Masonic " literateur , " I feel sure that the lodge which has honoured itself by its choice has a happy and prosperous year before it . I am sure you will maintain the traditions of this lodge in their integrity , and we all

whilst congratulating you on the position you occupy amongst us , wish you a happy career . In the name of the brethren , I give you our most hearty congratulations and warm welcome , and we promise that vve will stand by you as loyal subjects in every respect . Bro . Watson , to whom vvas accorded a hearty greeting , said : Ever since the opening of the lodge , brethren

have been loyal to the chair . A house divided against itself cannot stand , and a lodge vvhich lacks unity cannot prosper . I am proud , indeed , at the unanimous way in which you elected me . The number of congratulatory letters 1 have received from all parts of the country has almost overwhelmed me . I believe our lodge has been watched through the province as an experiment ; to-day we

have got beyond the region of experiment—we are a great success ; and , biethren , this success will be increased so long as perfect harmony prevails . If any difficulty arises , if only the brethren will come to me as W . M ., as a brother to whom they can speak in perfect confidence , all will be well , and troubles which may threaten will be dissipated . Let us all resolve to listen to no innuendoes from the

outside , but to stick to each other , and to be open and above board vvith each other , and then , as we are harmonious , we are bound to prosper . I wish long life , health , and prosperity to you all . The VV . M ., at a later period , asked the brethren to drink "The Health of Bro . Scott Young , " and said how much he vvould be missed both in the lodge and at refreshment .

Bro . Young again expressed regret at ; the painful severance vvhich circumstances had necessitated , and said some of his happiest Masonic memories were linked vvith Prudence Lodge . Several visiting brethren contributed songs and recitations ; and being ably backed up by Bros . Young , Hood , Cryer , and other musical members of the lodge , the proceedings throughout were most enjoyable .

The new Drill Hall ot the 2 nd City of London Rifle Volunteers , which has recently been erected in Farringdon-street , near the Metropolitan Railway Station , at a cost of close on £ 4000 , vvas formally opened by his Royal Highness the Commander-in-Chief on Saturday afternoon last , among the principal personages present being Bro . | Alderman Whitehead , the new Lord Mayor , and Bro . Sheriff Newton .

G . D . of England ( the celebrated Masonic author ); Kelly , P . G . G .
