PREACHING at St . Paul ' s Cathedral on Sunday afternoon , Bro . Archdeacon Sinclair said all knew how admirably the City had been governed for many a century . They rejoiced in the impartial justice , its freedom from corruption , and its unrivalled generosity . It was a glorious thing for the outgoing Lord Mayor to take home with him the recollection that he had been the means ot collecting £ 1 , 600 , 000 for the great war and the great famine . For the new Chief Magistrate the best wish was that he might rival the greatest of his predecessors in justice , uprightness , and integrity ; and that he might do his utmost to drive out of the City the spirit of reckless speculation and the lust for undue profits .

who Ts far less used than he to the " creeping things of the earth . " On one occasion , for instance , he espied something in the sand which he believed to be a lizard , but which to his horror turned out to be a viper of a deadly kind . His Greek boatman simply shivered with fright and , of course , did nothing ; but quick as thought the doctor seized an empty soda-water bottle which happened to be at hand , and , forcing the reptile ' s head into the neck , thus uncoiled it from the deadly grip of his hand .

H . R . H . When the City Imperial Volunteer battalion was formed 126 were

selected from those who volunteered from the Honourable Artillery Company , and there were 83 of the regiment among those who constituted the admirable battery which did such excellent service under Major McMicking . His Royal Highness proceeded to speak in terms of warm recognition of the manner in which the officers and men of the reeiment had acquitted themselves during the campaign . Major McMicking responded to the toast , and "The Health of the Prince of Wales" was afterwards proposed by Colonel Mackinnon .
