Bro . W . Finch , P . M ., received a hearty greeting on rising to respond . He stated that he was not entitled to all the good things said of him . His duty was a pleasure , and it was a great honour to have had the privilege of installing the W . M ., who was a very old friend of his , as was the W . M . ' s father . He was glad the lodge was a success ; they could have had it much larger in number , but what they had was quality and not quantity , and might it ever be so . The W . M . had many abilities , and they had no doubt that he would have a successful year of office in every way .

The W . M . gave " The Visitors , " and said they were always welco . ne , and the lodge was honoured with their presence . He was especially pleased to have Bro . Alexander Jardine , P . M ., there , as he was his mentor in Freemasonry , and as a Preceptor he was one of the very best , and he ( the W . M . ) was indebted to him for putting him through his paces . The W . M . also made special mention of several others of the visitors , and he associated with the toast the names of Bros . Alexander Jardine , P . M ., WCameronW . FisherL . S . Wilks , and R . T . West .

. , , Bro . Alexander Jardine , P . M ., responded . He had watched the W . M . all through his Masonic career with much interest ; he had been a diligent student , with the result that he was perfect in the ritual , and would be able to do everything required of him , Bro . W . Finch , P . M ., had done the ceremony of installation splendidly , with which , he and the other visitors were pleased , as they were for the manner they had been received and lavishly entertained . __

Suitable responses were also made by Bros . W . Cameron , WT Fisher , and L . S . Wilks , complimenting the W . M ., and eulogising the work they had witnessed . Bro . R . T . West also acknowledged the toast . The next toast was " The Charities , " which the W . M . gave in very eloquent terms . In submitt ng "The Treasurer and Secretary , " the W . M . remarked that they all

regretted the unavoidable absence of the Treasurer , Bro . Charles Steel , P . M . He was favoured on going into the chair with a good balance in hand , which was mainly due to the efforts of the Treasurer and Secretary , who were both excellent officers , and their great services were appreciated , and he coupled with the toast the name of the Secretary , Bro . W . R . Jeffray , P . M .

Bro . Jeffray , on rising to respond was received with much warmth . He said that the Treasurer was not able to be present owing to his public duties at Hackney . They had had two prosperous years and the lodge would go forward . He thanked them for their appreciation of his small efforts as Secretary , and said that during the W . M . ' s year of office he hoped to serve with satisfaction to him , as the two previous W . Ms , had been kind enough to say of him . The lodge was an unique one , and the members were all good , and he felt it was their ^ earnest wish that their good W . M . would have a

very happy year of office . The W . M . proposed "The I . P . M . and Past Masters , " observing that an apology was due from him for not having submitted such an important toast earlier in the evening , which he ought to have done . The I . P . M . had come to the end of his tether as W . M ., and he regretted that they had lost him as W . M ., but they would have his great services as I . P . M . during the next 12 months . The W . M . also referred in happy terms to Bro . W . Finch , P . M ., who was the first W . M . and the first Past Master of the lodge . In response , Bro . W . A . Finch , I . P . M ., stated that during the past year they had

heard his voice sufficiently , and at that late hour he would not inflict upon them the torture of a long speech , but would content himself by thanking them and his officers for their great assistance during his year of office . He left the chair with much regret ; but still he was delighted to see his old friend the W . M . as his successor . Trie W . M . gave the toast of " The Officers of the Lodge " in terms of eulogium , and he joined with it the name of Bro . J . Fenton-Jones , J . P . Bro . I . Fenton-Jones , J . P ., S . W ., responded , remarking that he felt his position

with fear and trembling , and he wished he could carry out his duties has well as the I . P . M . had done . If it had not been for his great friendship with the members he would not have undertaken the office ; but he would do his very best to discharge his duties , and he hoped the officers would always merit the kind things said of them that night . Bro . I . M . Bathgate , J . W ., also acknowledged the toast in appropriate terms .

Bro . H . H . Finch , I . G ., also responded , and said the lodge had been in existence since October , 189 S , and he thought the time had arrived for them to support the three Institutions . If they referred to the ceremony of initiation it was imperative that all lodges should give freely to the Charities , and the sooner the lodge started the better . He did not intend that his remarks should reflect upon the first two W . Ms ., but he hoped they would all agree that no time should now be lost in supporting their splendid Institutions .

Bros . A . S . Croome , Org ., and W . J . Davenport also acknowledged the toast in brief but happy terms . The Tyler ' s toast brought to a close a very enjoyable evening , and the W . M . is to be congratulated on the great success of the gathering . The musical entertainment was excellent . Mi 3 S Elsie Steauman charmed the company by her clever rendering of " Hello , ma Baby , " for which she received a welldeserved encore , as also she did for " The Drum Major , " and we hope to see more of

her in Masonic circles . Special mention should also be made of Bro . Will Davis , principal tenor of St . Paul ' s Cathedral , and late of the Carl Rosa Opera Company , who was in splendid voice , and his efforts were much appreciated . The following wellknown artistes also contributed to the harmony : Madame Clara Leighton , late of the Carl Rosa Opera Company ; Miss Ethel Wilford , Mr . Bert Graham , Mr . Bernard Russell , and Mr . Will Bentley . Bros . Willie Rouse and A . S . Croome ably presided at the pianoforte , and the unanimous verdict was that the artistes were excellent , and the entertainment was one of the very best .

The W . M ., Bro . W . F . Fenton-Jones , was born in 1 SC 1 , and for many years was a sideman at South Hackney , at which church he was from boyhood upwards a chorister and deputy organist . Having obtained an hereditary desire for public work , he took up the work of a guardian , being elected at the head of the poll for the Hackney Ward , and has been a guardian for nearly six years ; has done much for the workhouse children in the way of improving their education , and been the means of getting them taught skilled trades and music , and for four years consecutively has been

unanimously elected Chairman of the Childrens Committee of the Hackney Union . Our brother was initiated in the King Solomon Lodge , No . 2029 , of which he has been the Organist for some years , and was made a Mark Mason a year after in the King Solomon Mark Lodge , No . 3 S 5 , and was appointed Organist and D . of C . This was followed by his entering the King Solomon Chapter , and taking the office of Organist . The Acanthus Lodge , No . 2715 , of which he is now the Master , was the outcome of the

efforts of Bros . W . Finch , P . M ., and W . A . Finch , P . M ., and himselt , of which he was one of the founders and the first J . W . Bro . W . F . Fenton-Jones has gained a thorough mastery cf the ritual ; he is very enthusiastic , has the highest interests of Freemasonry at heart , and , in conclusion , we beg to tender our hearty congratulations to the members upon their good fortune in securing the services of so eloquent a W . M ., and the lodge , we feel sure , is quite safe in his hands .

Rothesay Lodge , No . 1687 . The regular monthly meeting of this important lodge was held at Frascati's on the 7 th inst ., and proved an impressive and brilliant function . There was a large gathering of members and many visitors , among them being the new Mayor of Finsbury , Bro . Enos Howes , J . P . The lodge was opened bv the W . M .. Bro . Louis Verdier . P . P . G . S .. who was ablv

assisted by the I . P . M ., Bro . G . Herbert-Burns , and by the following officers : Bros . E . J . Mills , S . W . ; W . H . Butler , J . W . ; W . Adams , P . M ., Treas . ; T . J . Bolton , P . M ., Sec ; G . W . Duck , S . D . ; A . Herbert-Burns , J . D . ; W . Maskell , I . G . ; W . Shaw , P . M ., D . C ; C . W . Holmes , A . D . C . ; Cavalierc Tito Mattei , Org . ; and H . Baldry and Dr . Bond , Stewards . The usual routine business of the lodge having been concluded , most impressive entrance was given to ( three initiates by the I . P . M ., at the request of the W . M . The

initiates were Messrs . Frederick Meyers , H . Hawkes , and Albert German . " Hearty good wishes" were then tendered by Bros . W . Frankland , 1706 ; W . Shorter , 170 S ; E . H . Raven , 2255 ; C . Courtney , 2255 ; R . M . H . Griffiths , 1677 ; W . Parker , P . M . 1 S 57 ; B . Crumplin , 2397 ; H . Saunion , 1423 ; and Captain M . H . Hall , P . M . and Sec . 27 . The lodge was then closed , the visiting brethren admitting to Bro . G . Herbert-Burns , I . P . M ., the great pleasure they had derived from his singularly impressive working of the initiation .

At the banquet which followed , after the usual loyal and Masonic toasts had been honoured , Bro . G . Herbert Burns , I . P . M ., proposed " The Worshipful Master " in his usual graceful manner . Bro . Louis Verdier was , he reminded them , a thorough Mason in every sense of the word , and no man could have the interests of freemasonry or his lodge more at heart than he . Bro . Louis Verdier would , he was sure , carry out the duties of W . M . during his term of office to their complete satisfaction . ( Applause . )

Bro . Burley sung " Who carries the gun ?" The W . M . acknowledged with gratitude the kind reception given to the toast . It was quite true that he did enter into the spirit of Masonry with a full appreciation of its beautiful ritual . To him it was a religion sufficient in itself . His only regret was , and he felt it acutely , that , English not being his mother tongue , he was sometimes nervous of his ability to render the ritual—as he considered it ought to be rendered . He felt as a foreigner that he spoilt the beautiful ritual . ( " No , no , " and applause . ) In

conclusion he assured the brethren he would do his best to uphold the great reputation of the Rothesay Lodge . ( Applause . ) After a clever parody by Bro . Noel , The W . M . proposed , in appropriate terms , " The Health of the Initiates . " Bro . Bentley having given a very fine rendition of the " Holy City , " Bros . Meyers , Hawkes , and German briefly responded . Bro . Thos . 1 . Bolton , P . M . and Secretary of the Rothesay Lodge , then rose , by

permission of the W . M ., to propose the important toast of " The Joining Members , " and was received with loud applause . In an eloquent speech he referred to the many good traits and attributes of Bro . Enos Howes , J . P . and Mayor designate of Finsbury ( since elected to the Mayoral chair ) . It was his pleasure and pride to have been associated with him for many years past in other walks of life , and to have worked shoulder to shoulder with him in local government spheres . ( Hear , hear , and apol luss . ) Within those peaceful walls of Masonry they knew no race , no creed , no politics , but ,

at the same time , as citizens of this great Empire , they could not be insensible of what was going on around them and it was , therefore , with the keenest pleasure he asked the brethren to join with him in welcoming to the Rothesay Lodge a Mason of whom his fellow citizens were so proud that they felt justified in asking him to accept the high and responsible position of first Mayor of Finsbury . ( Loud applause . ) Of Bro . H . William Mellor he ( Bro . Bolton ) could also say that their friendship had extended over many years and in him the lodge would have another member of whom it would be proud . After a song by Bro . Noel ,

Bro . Enos Howe , J . P ., responded in a graceful speech . He asked Bro . P . M . Bolton and the brethren of the Rothesay Lodge to accept his grateful thanks for the very kind and happy manner in which the toast had been proposed and accepted . The Rothesay Lodge had won such a high position in the Masonic world that he felt a special pride in being elected to it . ( Applause . ) It was also a source of pleasure in so far that he knew so many of the brethren that he was quite at home among them . The Rothesay Lodge , true to the principles of the Craft , knew no race , for its members

hailed from all parts of the world , and it richly deserved the great reputation it had achieved , that of being one of the highest lodges in the kingdom . ( Loud applause . ) Referring to Bro . P . M . Bolton ' s eulogistic prophesy as to the Mayorship of Finsbury , whilst he sincerely thanked him for his very kind appreciation he would remind them that the event had not happened , and it was not proper for him to make further allusion to it mote than to say that if the high office of Mayor of Finsbury should be conferred upon him he would use every effort to reflect honour upon the borough , which honour , he felt assured , would also reflect upon the Rothesay Lodge . ( Applause . ) In

conclusion , Bro . Howes paid a sincere tribute to the assistance and guidance which he had received from Masonry during a long life of municipal work . ( Applause . ) Bro . H . W . Mellor also responded . Bro . Tito Mattei having given an enjoyable p iano solo in his usual gifted style , The W . M . proposed , in felicitous terms , "The Visitors . " The toast was acknowledged by Bros . Capt . Hall , Frankland , Parker , Shorter , and Saunion . The toast of "The I . P . M . and P . Ms . " was next given by theW . M ., and replied to in suitable terms by Bros . G . Herbert-Burns and J . H . Catten .

" The Treasurer and Secretary" were enthusiastically honoured , and acknowledged by Bros . Walter Adams and Thos . J . Bolton respectively . "The Officers , " very kindly put by the W . M ., was responded to bv Bro . E . I , Mills , S . W . The Tyler ' s toast concluded an enjoyable evening . Amongst those who contributed to an excellent musical oroirramme not alreadv

mentioned were Bro . Catten , with a very good rendering of " A Dream of Paradise , " and Bro . Bentley , who sang , with fine effect , " In Years to Come . " The following brethren were present in addition to those already referred to : Bros . George Eade , G . A . Bentley , E . Bolton , J . R . Campbell , R . Ballinger , T . A . Hooper , R . Madewell , T . R . Grierson , A . Hugo , G . J . Riley , J . F . Shiers . S . A . Broomhead , H . A . King , W . C . Stratton , F . G . Smith , G . Mentasti , J . Lusty , W . H . Peacock , J . The new furniture , consisting of beautiful sets of solid oak and light blue rep , had been placed in the room , and with another small addition or two , the lodge will possess one of the prettiest and correct rooms in the province . After full discussion on several Masonic matters , the brethren adjourned to the club room for light refreshment .

Hudson Lodge , No . 2791 . The third regular monthly meeting of this lodge was held on Wednesday , the 7 th instant , in the Masonic Rooms , Wolsingfum , co . Durham . After the opening of the lodge , and the confirmation of the minutes of the previous meeting , which contained some interesting items , and were somewhat lengthy , a ballot was taken for Messrs . William Coates and Thomas Lacey , who , having been approved , were , with Mi . John Hy . Dent Dawson , duly initiated in a most impressive manner . On the conclusion of this ceremony the lodge proceeded to pass Bros , the Rev . T . H . E . C . Espin and C . E . Akeroyd , R . E . Stobbs , R . Rowe , J . D . McCallum , and W . T . Knaggs , which was performed in a highly satisfactory manner . Three new

members were proposed . After the arduous duties of the lodge had been completed , an adjournment was made to the banqueting hall , and during the evening suitable speeches were made by several of the brethren , the musical talent being represented by Bros . Milburn , Egglestone , and others . A long toast list , including " The Initiates " and " The Visitors " having been duly honoured , a pleasant gathering was brought to a close by the solemn ana impressive Tyler ' s toast .

BRO . J . M . KLENCK has returned from the Continent much improved in health by the rest he has had .

Craft Masonry.

initiates were Messrs .
