The principal artistes engaged are Madame Albani , Miss Clara Butt , Mr . Lloyd , and Mr . Santley ; a band and chorus of 3000 performers also taking
part under the conductorship of Mr . August Manns . " Elijah " in its original form was first produced in public under Mendelssohn's direction at the Birmingham Musical Festival on August 26 th , 1 S 4 G ; but it was afterwards considerably altered , and the oratorio as we now know it dates from the early part of 1 S 47 , the y <; ar of the composer's death .
A VERY URGENT appeal is being made by Bro . Lord Herschell , P . G . W ., in behalf of the Children ' s Aid Society , a Branch of the Reformatory and Refuge Union , of which his lordship is President . The society has been in existence and has worked with signal success . for close on 40 years . Large numbers of children have been rescued by its means from criminal and vicious surroundings , from the almost certain fate of a future
of dishonesty and vice , and have become honest and honourable men and women . During the past year alone as many as 1290 such children have come within thi beneficent operations of this society , while it is even more gratifying still to know that of the children thus rescued by the society during the past 12 years , nearly 90 , ' per cent , are known to be doing well , and only 5 per cent , not to be doing well . It is earnestly to be hoped that Bro . Lord Herschell ' s appeal will be attended with the success it merits .
PROPOSED MASONIC HALL . —The Freemasons of Sutton have , for a long time past , been impressed with the necessity of building a Masonic hill for the use of the lodges meeting in the district , and with this object in view a compiny has been formed , the provisional directors being all well-known residents in the district with considerable influence in Masonic circles . A prospectus has been issued , which shows that the proposed capital is £ 2000 in 1000 £ 2 shares . The promoters , after having gone carefully
into the probable receipts and expenditure , are of opinion that a fair dividend on the money expended may be reasonably expected . AN ELECTRIC ARC LIGHT has been placed experimentally in Hyde Park opposite the Marble Arch , and if it proves a success it is intended to light with similar lamps the much used footpath leading from the Marble Arch to Albert Gate , and also to place another row of lamps , round the bandstand for use during the summer months . THE ANNUAL DINNER of the Tailors' and Outfitters' Assistants' Mutual Association was held in St . James's Hall , on Saturday evening last , under the presidency of Mr . James Mackay . It was stated in the course of the proceedings that the Annuity Fund had increased during the year , and that the affairs generally of the Association were in a prosperous condition .

THE DIRECTORS of the Crystal Palace have , in response to a generally-expressed wish , resolved to celebrate the jubilee of " Elijah " by a performance of Mendelssohn ' s most popular oratorio on the Handel orchestra and on a festival scale on Saturday afternoon , June the 27 th . The principal artistes engaged are Madame Albani , Miss Clara Butt , Mr . Lloyd , and Mr . Santley ; a band and chorus of 3000 performers also taking
part under the conductorship of Mr . August Manns . " Elijah " in its original form was first produced in public under Mendelssohn's direction at the Birmingham Musical Festival on August 26 th , 1 S 4 G ; but it was afterwards considerably altered , and the oratorio as we now know it dates from the early part of 1 S 47 , the y <; ar of the composer's death .
A VERY URGENT appeal is being made by Bro . Lord Herschell , P . G . W ., in behalf of the Children ' s Aid Society , a Branch of the Reformatory and Refuge Union , of which his lordship is President . The society has been in existence and has worked with signal success . for close on 40 years . Large numbers of children have been rescued by its means from criminal and vicious surroundings , from the almost certain fate of a future
of dishonesty and vice , and have become honest and honourable men and women . During the past year alone as many as 1290 such children have come within thi beneficent operations of this society , while it is even more gratifying still to know that of the children thus rescued by the society during the past 12 years , nearly 90 , ' per cent , are known to be doing well , and only 5 per cent , not to be doing well . It is earnestly to be hoped that Bro . Lord Herschell ' s appeal will be attended with the success it merits .
PROPOSED MASONIC HALL . —The Freemasons of Sutton have , for a long time past , been impressed with the necessity of building a Masonic hill for the use of the lodges meeting in the district , and with this object in view a compiny has been formed , the provisional directors being all well-known residents in the district with considerable influence in Masonic circles . A prospectus has been issued , which shows that the proposed capital is £ 2000 in 1000 £ 2 shares . The promoters , after having gone carefully
into the probable receipts and expenditure , are of opinion that a fair dividend on the money expended may be reasonably expected . It will be seen from the advertisement that the list closes on the 19 th February , and Masons and others who are interested in the town should prove that interest by subscribing . One brother—a member of the Sutton Lodge—has promised to subscribe in shares the full cost of the proposed site , which is in a most convenient position ,
