Masonic Ball At Longton.
MASONIC BALL AT LONGTON .
A ball , under the auspices of the Etruscan Lodge , was held at the Town Hall , Longton , on Thursday , the 2 nd instant . It was somewhat unfortunate that the County Cricket Clab ball at Newcastle should have been fixed for the same evening , the smaller and more local gathering suffering to an appreciable extent in consequence . It was hoped that the Duchess of Sutherland ( who had taken tickets ) and some of the guests at Trentham would pay a short visit on
their way to Newcastle , but of this their arrangements did not permit . No pains had been spared by the W . M . ( Bro . G . E . Walters ) , the Secretary ( Bro . Arthur L . Harber ) , and the Ball Committee to make the evening an enjoyable one for all who availed themseves of being present . A most skilful preparation of the hall had been carried out by Mr . H . W . Fleet ( of the firm of Messrs . George Fleet and Co ., Stoke-on-Trent ) . The entrance was carpeted with crimson felt and hung with Indian curtains . In the
assembly room festooned draperies were charmingly arranged in shades of scarlet , pink , apple green , and terra-cotta over each window and in each recess of the cosy corners which had been cunningly contrived under the specially constructed musicians' gallery . In the general decoration of the room some 40 different draperies were employed , no two being alike , a harmonious ensemble being produced by the tasteful blending of the colours . A modest display of Masonic banners and devices gave a distinctive character to the decorations , noticeable being the old banner of the lodge , with its ceramic emblem , an Etruscan vase
surmounted by the Staffordshire knot . The stage was converted into a drawingroom , furnished in Chippendale and Sheraton styles , and carpeted with Indian and Turkey carpets . The doorways were draped with Indian curtains and festooned valances of Japanese muslins . Pedestals of artistic design , containing choice plants , were kindly lent by Messrs . T . Forester and Sons , Phu ; nix Works . The supper-room was draped in cream lace , with large red Japanese fans on the walls and over the windows , which produced an exceedingly bright and cheerful effect . A well-arranged card and smoke room was a necessary adjunct of the arrangements .
Bro . Lieut .-Col . Bindley , Deputy Prov . G . M ., was unable to bs present owing to absence from Staffordshire , and the . principal representative of the province was Bro . E . V . G . Org . ) band , which consisted of eight performers , and supper was well served by Bro . G . H . Frewer , Heathcote Arms Hotel . Altogether the company numbered about 100 , and dancing was kept up with great enjoyment till five o ' clock in the morning .

The new chief bestowed his collars with aptitude and tact , and presided over the banquet in an admirable
manner . The Prov . Grand Master , in responding to the toast of his health , spoke of the grandeur of Freemasonry , and of the effective work shown in this ancient lodge . He did not remember hearing the charges more impressively given than had been done by Bro . B . Chennell , P . M ., whilst the same excellence of work was shown b y all those
who took part in the ceremony of installation . It was a good thing to have in the province such an old lodge , especially when it was seen to be in such a state of efficiency . Bro . Colonel Caldwell also made pleasing reference to the ancient copperplate frontispiece to the lodge summons , which was of a most uncommon kind , and Slid that Freemasons would have to put their shoulders to the wheel to rival the high standard of efficiency and strength of that old lodge .
The Deputy Prov . Grand Master responded to the toast of "The Provincial Grand Officers " in felicitous terms . The newly-installed W . M . had a hearty " send-off" in his year of office , not the least cordial greeting and good wishes coming from his mother lodge , at Leytonstone , through Bro . L . Lewis , P . M ., and from his native town of Ipswich through Bro . A . Spalding , I . P . M ., the other visitors responding being Bro . H . Trevor-Jones , P . M . S 59 , and Bro . W . Mills , of Dublin . During the proceedings , a Past Master ' s jewel was presented to Bro . J . L . Rutter by the Prov . Grand Master on behalf of the lodge .
Some excellent music was provided for th ; company , the glees by Messrs . Bilton and Driver , Bros . Duncome and James , and Mr . Driver ' s songs being especially noteworthy .
Bedford Lodge , No . 157 . This centenary lodge held its installation meeting on the loth inst . at Freemasons ' Hall , under the able presidency of Bro . Layton A . Richardson , W . M . William Edward Dyne , a cousin of the W . The only ceremony , therefore , to be
performed was the installation , and Bro . J . C . Main , P . M ., and Sec . pro tern ., presented to Bro . J . Bruton , P . M . —who , at the request of Bro . Richardson , W . M ., took the chair —Bro . Henry W . Dyne , J . W ., and W . M . elect . Bro . Bruton then formally installed Bro . Dyne as W . M . of the lodge , and Bro . Richardson was invested with the collar of I . P . M . The other officers invested were Bros . E . F . Shoebridge , S . W . ; R . C . Cork , J . W . ; J . T . Brings , P . M ., Treas . ; J . C . Main , P . M ., Sec . ; J . R . Hill , S . D . ; C . B . Weedon , J . D . ; G . H . Cox , I . G . ; Vincent Larner , P . M ., and W . Smith , Stwds . ;
J . Bruton , P . M ., D . C . ; H . Rogers , A . D . C . ; and Edward Mallett , Tyler . And here a very pretty and unique incident occurred . The outgoing Master , Bro . Richardson , desired the acceptance by the Tyler of a b : autiful gold scarf pin , designed as a cable-tow in the form of a Staffordshire knot , and in making the presentation Bro . Richardson stated it was as a memento of his appreciation of the services of Bro . Mallett as Tyler of the lodge during his ( Bro . Richardson ' s ) year of office . Bro . Mallett having thanked Bro . Richardson in graceful terms , the charges to the
W . M ., Wardens , and brethren were delivered by Bro . Main , P . M ., and an elegant Past Master ' s jewel , the gift of the lodge , and a Past Master ' s collar with a massive silver Past Master ' s jewel attached , bearing an inscription recording the object of the presentation , was handed to Bro . Richardson , who , after feelingly acknowledging the handsome gift , informed the brethren that he would act as Steward for the lodge at the Festival rf the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution in 1 S 97 , over which H . R . H . the
Duke of Connaught would preside . The W . M ., Bro . Dyne , said he should represent the lodge at the forthcoming Festival of the same Institution on the 2 Cth prox ., when Lord George Hamilton , M . P ., will preside . There were several communications read by the Secretory , among them being a letter from the son of the late Bro . Thomas Cubitt , P . M ., P . G . P ., and sympathetic references were made to the death of this old Past Master , and also Bro . William Holland , P . M .
Nothing further offering for the good of Freemasonry in general or the Bedford Lodge in particular , the W . M ., with the assistance of the brethren , closed the lodge , and lost no time in requesting their attendance in Freemasons' Tavern at a choice banquet . The brethren readily acceded to the requisition , and under the genial presidency of Bro . Dyne , whose Past Masters exhibited corresponding cordiality , enjoyed abountiful repast .
This was followed by the usual toasts , and a capital vocal and instrumental concert by Mr . A . P . Mayes , Mr . C . Ga / e , and Mr . F . Snelling ( clarionet solos ) , with Bro . William Graves , solo pianist , conducting and accompanying . Bro . 11 . \ V . Dyne , W . M ., af . cr having proposal " The Queen , " in the course of proposing " The Prince of Wales , " said , with reference to the Prince of Wales ' s connection with Freemasonry and the success of the Order , that no matier what a member of the English Royal Family took up "it alwiys go 2 s , " and reminded them that members of the Royal Family had gone out to Ashanti .

William Edward Dyne , a cousin of the W . M . elect , was balloted for as a candidate for initiation , and the ballot was unanimous in his favour , but , unfortunately , he was unable , through illness , to be present . The only ceremony , therefore , to be
performed was the installation , and Bro . J . C . Main , P . M ., and Sec . pro tern ., presented to Bro . J . Bruton , P . M . —who , at the request of Bro . Richardson , W . M ., took the chair —Bro . Henry W . Dyne , J . W ., and W . M . elect . Bro . Bruton then formally installed Bro . Dyne as W . M . of the lodge , and Bro . Richardson was invested with the collar of I . P . M . The other officers invested were Bros . E . F . Shoebridge , S . W . ; R . C . Cork , J . W . ; J . T . Brings , P . M ., Treas . ; J . C . Main , P . M ., Sec . ; J . R . Hill , S . D . ; C . B . Weedon , J . D . ; G . H . Cox , I . G . ; Vincent Larner , P . M ., and W . Smith , Stwds . ;
