The Worshipful Master ( who was evidently astonished at receiving the handsome present ) replied in a humorous and neat speech , and proceeded to propose " The Health of Bro . W . Lee , I . P . M ., " and said it gave him great pleasure to present him with a handsome P . M . ' s jewel , subscribed by the brethren of thelodge . The I . P . M . was known to all present as a worthy Mason , and under his

guidance the lodge had been very prosperous . It therefore gave him great pleasure to pin the handsome jewel on Bro . W . Lee's breast , as a token of their appreciation of his services . Bro . Lee , I . P . M ., tendered his sincere thanks for the hearty manner in which his health had been received , and also for the handsome jewel presented to him .

Other toasts followed , and a most pleasant evening was spent . Previous to this Bro . W . Lee , I . P . M ., had presented ( at his own expense ) a Royal Jubilee jewel to Bro . " Hearty good wishes " having been expressed by the visitors , the lodge was closed . The brethren adjourned to the Dolphin Hotel Assembly Room , where a most recherche banquet was served , ! the

table being decorated with the choicest flowers , reflecting the greatest credit on Mrs . Wells , the hostest and wife of the W . M ., as under her superintendence the whole arrangements were carried out . On removal of the cloth the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were proposed and duly honoured , after which capital songs , accompanied on the piano by Bro . Finley , P . M ., were rendered . The singing of The National Anthem brought a most enjoyable evening to a close .

MANCHESTER . —St . David ' s Lodge ( No . 1147 ) . —The installation of Bro . Christopher Wren took place in the Freemasons' Hall , Cooper-street , on Thursday , the 9 th instant , when there were present Bros . R . Vawser , W . M . j E . Roberts , I . P . M . ; C . Wren , S . The lodge was opened , and the minutes of the previous meeting read and confirmed , Bro . R . Chadwick , P . M ., occupied the chair for the purpose of installing Bro . C . Wren , who , after being presented by Bro . R . Vawser , was

formally inducted into the chair of K . S . with all due rite and ceremony , and subsequently proclaimed and saluted . Bro . T . R . Peel , P . M ., P . P . J . G . D ., presented the working tools and proclaimed the W . M . The W . M . then appointed his officers , and they were invested by Bro . Peel as follows : Bros . J . H . Dalgleish , S . W . j J . Baird , J . W . j J . E . Ashton , Sec . j C . P . Dunkerley , S . D . j T . C

OIney , J . D . j E . Roberts , P . M ., D . C . j E . A . Lock , Org . j W . H . Cook , I . G . j and T . Elliott , P . M ., Stwd . Bro . Peel also gave the three addresses , and concluded the ceremony with prayer . Bro . I . Davies , P . M ., was appointed freas ., but in consequence of illness was unable to be present , and was invested by proxy . Great regret was manifested at the absence of Bro . Davies , who has

been confined to his room for some weeks past . He was always a leading spirit on these occasions , and a constant attendant at the ordinary lodge meetings . On the motion of Bro . M . Fairweather , P . M ., seconded by Bro . T . R . Peel , P . M ,, a message of sympathy was ordered to be sent to Bro . Davies , together with sincere wishes for his speedy recovery , and at the close of the lodge proceedings

that was done . Bro . T . Elliott , P . M ., proposed for initiation at the next meeting , Mr , A . Jones , son of the late Bro . Ellis Jones , P . M ., P . P . G . T ., whose father expressed a wish before his death , that he should , at the first opportunity , become a Freemason , and join the St . David ' s Lodge . There being no further business , the lodge was closed . The brethren adjourned to the Grand Hotel to celebrate

the Festival of St . John . Here the brethren were highly pleased to find the R . W . Prov . G . M ., Col . Le Gendre N . Starkie , who had been unable to be present at the installation . A most recherche banquet was thoroughly appreciated by all present . The usual toasts were proposed and responded to . The W . M . proposed "TheQueen , " and "H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , H . R . H . the Princess of Wales and the rest

of the Royal Family , " both of which toasts were heartily drunk . The S . W ., Bro . Dalgleish , proposed "The Earl of Carnarvon , Pro . G . M ., " "The Earl of Lathom , D . G M ., and the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " to which Bro . Col . Starkie , R . W . P . G . M ., responded . The VV . M . then proposed "The Health of the R . W . P . G . Master , Col . Starkie , " and admitted his inability to

do justice to such a toast . He expressed the gratification of all present at being honoured with the presence of the R . VV . Prov . G . Master , who ruled over his large province of East Lancashire in such a way as to endear him in the hearts of every one of the large body of Masons in the

province . Bro . Wren spoke of the great interest Col . Starkie took in all matters concerning his province , how he made a point of always being present at each meeting , and also at the numerous Charity meetings connected with that admirable Institution , the East Lancashire Systematic Educational Benevolent . In conclusion Bro . Wren asked

fhe brethren to rise and drink the R . VV . Prov . Grand Master's health in a bumper . The invitation was promptly responded to with great enthusiasm , after which Col . Starkie , in a very humorous speech , thanked the members of St . David's Lodge for inviting him to their banquet , and expressed the pleasure he had experienced in being present .

Bro . Baird , J . W ., proposed " The Health of Bro . George Mellor , V . W . Dep . Prov . G . Master , and the rest of the Past and Present Prov . Grand Officers , " and Bros . Wm . Nicholl , P . G . Treas . j Robt . McDowell Smith , P . P . G . T . j and John Eaton , Cheshire , responded . Bro . R . Vawser , I . P . M ., proposed "The Health of the W . M ., Bro . Christopher Wren , " and said that although

he did not underrate the distinguished presence amongst them of the R . W . Prov . Grand Master , yet it was the custom of St . David's Lodge to consider the health of the W . M . the toast of the evening . He had no doubt the name of Christopher Wren would recall to the recollection of the brethren the illustrious architect who designed that noble building St . Paul ' s Cathedral , in addition

to the palace at Blenheim , and other great edifices . Such a name would be worthily and properly handed down to posterity , and consequently it was an honour to bear a similar one . Their W . M ., however , was not an architect , but was connected with one of the largest manufacturies in Lancashire . He had shown great interest in all matters connected with the welfare of St . David's Lodge , and would no doubt continue to do so during his year of office .

There was no brother more fitted for the position of their VV . M . than Bro . Wren , who would have the privilege of presiding during the 21 st anniversary of the lodge , and who would perform his duties creditably , and do all in his power for the Masonic Charities . The toast was well received and heartily drunk , after which Bro . Cuthbert Blacow sang " Here's to his health , " and the W . M . responded in appropriate terms .

At this stage the brethren adjourned to an ante-room where coffee and liqueurs were served . On re-assembling , Bro . Thos . Robt . Peel , P . M ., P . P . J . G . D ., proposed "The Masonic Charities , " and in the course of his remarks , feelingly alluded to the absence of the lodge's Charity Representative , Bro . Ishmael Davies , P . M ., whose illness prevented him from being present and

proposing the toast , also to receive a gold presentation Treasurer ' s and P . M . ' s jewel combined , which the brethren , in appreciation of his long and zealous services had subscribed towards the purchase of . Bro . Peel dwelt on the necessity for every brother to practice that virtue of Charity which was the foundation and watchward of their Order . The St . David ' s Lodge , hesaid , had during the past

year subscribed thirty guineas to the R . M . Benevolent Institution , and they had also supported the Boys' Institution . They had erred a little in not supporting the Girls ' Institution which was at present in great need of funds . But there was a special opportunity of retrieving their lost position , afforded them this year , being the centenary of that admirable Institution . Whilst advocating and

recommending for support the claims of these three Institutions , Bro . Peel said they must never forget the one nearer home , viz ., the East Lancashire Systematic , which is was their imperative duty to support , particularly as it was never backward in promptly answering the calls made upon it . Speaking feelingly , Pro . Peel said he considered it more advisable for , and beneficial to , the recipients to receive a

moderately good sound education , such as the East Lancashire Systematic Institution was the means of dispensing , than for a child to be educated far superior to his brothers and sisters . He deprecated Freemasony being looked upon as a benefit society , at the same time it was the duty of every member of the Craft to do his utmost for the poor and distressed , and put in practice the true and pure

principles of their Order . Bro . R . Chadwick , P . M ., proposed "The Founders of St . David's Lodge , " and in so doing regretted that only one of them remained on the roll , the others having either unfortunately gone over to the majority , or seceded from the lodge through a variety of causes . Bro . Chadwick spoke in regretful terms of the loss the lodge had

sustained through the death of Bro . Ellis Jones , P . M ., P . P . G . T ., who was one of its founders , and than whom a better Mason never lived . The lodge , too , lost another of its founders when Bro . Humphries was killed during his year of office . Bro . Chadwick said that although h p was not a founder , he was very close on the track , having joined the lodge shortly after its consecration . At that time there

were several Owen ' s , Williams s and Jones s in it , who proved by their presence the Welsh title to be no misnomer , but at the present time the lodge bore a more cosmopolition appearance , there being Englishmen , Irish , and Scotchmen , in addition to the remaining few Welshmen . He could assure the R . W . P . G . M . they were imbued with the same spirit of zeal for Freemansonry as the original

founders , who , if they could return , would not , he felt sure , be ashamed of the present condition of the lodge . It was a pleasant thing to respect the memory of good and worthy men , such as those he had referred to . After expressing the pleasure it gave him to have the R . W . P . G . M . amongst them , Bro . Chadwick said it had been his privilege to see Col . Starkie installed P . G . M ., and also of witnessing

the imposing ceremony , in the Albert Hall , when the M . W . G . M . was installed . In conclusion Bro . Chadwick said he hoped the St . David ' s Lodge would endeavour to do its utmost for the welfare of Freemasonry in the future as in the past . Several other toasts were proposed and responded to , the interval between each being enlivened with songs , recitai

Beadmore , for his able services as Secretary during his year of office . Both the above handsome jewels were manufactured by Bro . George Kenning , 47 , Bridge-street , Manchester .

The lodge was opened , and the minutes of the previous meeting read and confirmed , Bro . R . Chadwick , P . M ., occupied the chair for the purpose of installing Bro . C . formally inducted into the chair of K . S . with all due rite and ceremony , and subsequently proclaimed and saluted . Bro . T . R . Peel , P . M ., P . P . J .

R . H . the Prince of Wales , H . of the Royal Family , " both of which toasts were heartily drunk . The S .
