To the Editor ofthe "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , In the Freemason of the nth inst ., page 86 , at a meeting of the " Lodge of Union , " No . 38 , Bro . Molesworth is reported to have said that : " In 1724 the Lodge of

at . John was consecrated at the White Horse Inn , holding its meetings on the third Friday in the month . " The antiquity of Freemasonry in Chichester is undoubted ; but I venture to ask Bro . Molesworth for some reliable evidence in reference to the meeting of the lodge referred to ( which in Grand Lodge records never bore any name ) at the " White Horse " as early as 1724 , as I do not find it was there prior to 1738 . Also , if there are any particulars as to the " consecration , " and what it consisted of . The first mention of the lodge , so far as I am aware , is in Engraved List of 1725 , " Swan , City of Chichester , Third Fryday in Every Month , " without any number .

( Vide frontispiece to "Masonic Records , 1717—1886 , " ) and in the MS , List of 1725 , in Grand Lodge minute book , it is "Swan in Chichester . " In 1729 it is numbered " 31 , Swan , City of Chichester , Third Friday in the month , " and the Grand Lodge MS . List of 1731-2 , as well as Rawlinson's List of 1733 , describe its place of meeting as at the " Swan , City of Chichester , " According to W . Smith ' s
