Henley Lodge , No . 1472 . The installation meeting of the above flourishing lodge—numbering as it now does some 150 good and true Masons on its books—took place on Tuesday , the 7 th instant , at the Three Crowns Hotel , North Woolwich , and was graced by the presence of some 130 brethren of the lodge and visitors . _ The lodge was opened by the W . M ., Bro . James Palmer , and the minutes of the previous meeting having been confirmed , the Auditors ' report and balance-sheet were received and adopted , a high eulogium being paid to Bro .
Jolly , P . M ., Sec , for the admirable manner in which the accounts were presented to the Audit Committee . The balance-sheet showed that the sum of £ 44 6 odd had been received , and up to date a clear balance of over £ 200 was in the Treasurer ' s hands . ( We may here confidently contradict the report that either Bro , jolly or Bro . Canning , the esteemed Treasurer , have been offered and have declined Grand Lodge honours . ) The ballot was then taken for Messrs . Bartlett , Pugh , Parker , Davis , and Reynolds , and they were duly approved of . Bro . A . T . Ives , P . M ., D . C , then presented

The banquet was served in the handsome assembly room attached to the hotel , the walls of which were prettily decorated with shields and floral devices . The stage was a mass of beautiful shrubs and hothouse llo . vers , tropical and lovely ; while half concealed amid this luxuriance a portion of the Royal Artillery Band played selections during the repast . The toasts were of the usual orthodox order— "The Queen , God bless her ;" "H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , Grand Master , " and "God bless him . " We , down here at Woolwich , sutrounded as we are by arsenals , dockyards , and barracks , are real loyal

f he initiates all made a speech in reply to the toast of their health , and were evidently all coached by one Preceptor , for trny all said the same thing , About 10 of the visitors responded to their toasl , and ware exceedingly unanimous in declaring that " never had they seen the work done better , if so well . " Their lodges rr . et on certain coming dates , and every member of the lodge was cordially invited to atler . d , and " W . Sir , " said one fjrand old Past Master , " if we cannot imitate your splendid hospitality , we will at least give you a hearty Masonic welcome . " At that and of that we all felt very proud , and premised to attend his lodge , in Herts .
I hen " I he Past Mastcis " had a go at speechifying , and it was nice to hear them one and all declare their delights at being "the back bone" of the lodire , and how that , as lung as they lived , thty would uphold the dignity and presti . e of the lodge . 'Jhus , the delightful lime passed , song and sentiment , kind and brotherly recognitions , and an earnest desire to make and enjoy happiness filled up the passing hours , till the Tyler ' s toast warned us that the time had come when we were " happy to meet , happy to part , and happy to meet again . A sum of 10 guineas was voted from the lodge funds to be placed on the W . M . 's list as Steward for the Girls ' Institution ; likewise a similar sum voted to the widow of a late Treasurer to the lodge . A proposition for initiation was handed in to the
Secretary . Bro . Henry Cornford , W . M ., announced the most important ceremony of the evening . Bro . L . C . Shipton , I . P . M ., then stated that in commemoration of the W . M ., his first initiate of several years previous , occupying that proud position , he asked their acceptance of the banner to the lodge in honour of Bro . fl . Cornford , one of the best of Masons and Masters occupying the chair , and he would ask Bro . P . Nairne , P . G . D ., to kindly unfurl the same . Bro . P . Nairne , in reply said , in answer to Bro . L . C . Shipton , P . M ., that it wasa most pleasurable
and happy task . 'I he Earl of Lathom Lodge had been named after a most worthy nobleman , one of the greatest in modern times . It had been said of him , and rightly , too , that among the late Lord Lathom's manifold duties , he not only adorned the Court , the State , and the Craft , but also , from one who knew him best , he equally adorned the hearth . He was an excellent Mason , and all deeply mourn his loss . Bro . Nairne then said , by the invitation of Bro . Shipton , P . M ., and on behalf of the lodge , he unfurled the banner , which bore the arms of Lord Lathom , and he hoped it would be
borne for many years before the lodge in Masonic progress , and that the brethren and worthy candidates who would from time to time be initiated in the lodge would remember the motto "In Portu Quies , " rest in the haven of Freemasonry in the . Earl of Lathom Lodge . The W . M . in a few well-chosen remarks most heartily thanked Bro . Nairne for his very graceful act , well knowing the many professional and Masonic duties that so often bound him . The brethren of the lodge were grateful for his great kindness . Bro . Hy . Cornford , W . M ., then said he could not allow the pleasing event to pass without tendering his heartfelt thanks to Bro . Shipton , who was his father in Freemasonry .
He had known him many years before entering the Craft , and he had great admiration for him . Little did he think of ever occupying the proud position of Master , but having buckled up , he loved the ritual , and had so far bicoma master of it . lit trusted that the brethren would meet under the banner for many years to come . This was seconded by Bro . Ware , S . W ., in some well chosen remarks . In response , Bro . Shipton , P . M ., in a few words , said he was grateful for such kind remarks , and it gave him intense pleasure to present the banner , which he hoped would hang above the Master's chair for long to come , and never be soiled .
The business of the lodge ended it was closed , and the brethren adjourned to an excellent supper supplied by Mrs . Vcnables , the proprietress , in her usual pleasing style . Supper ended , the W . M . gave the loyal and Masonic toasts , which were duly honoured . The toast of " The Pro G . M ., the Dep . G . M ., and the rest of the Grand Officers ,
Present and Past , " was then given , the W . M . stating the lodge was honoured with the presence of Bro . Nairne , P . G . D ., who most ably replied , specially mentioning it was his first visit . and he had never seen the work cirried out with more accuracy than by the W . M . and his officers . It gave him great pWasure to be present . He also remirkedon the great assistance given the brethren in the Earl of Lathom Lodge of lnstru : ti > n by the Preceptor , Bro . C L . Plant , P . M . 101 , who he trusted would speedily be restored to health and his very useful work .
Bro . R . Peachey , I . P . M , in proposing the toast of " The W . M ., " said his work almost surpassed other Masters of trie lodge and hi ; had sho . vn his great abil . ty in already in two months having had 10 initiates . He hoped the W . M . wojIJ continur ; to have the same success and do the same excellent woik in the lodge . In reply , Bro . H . Cornford , who had quite an ovation , said he was most grateful for
such kind remarks and since his installation he had endjavoured to do his b jst and he was glad it had given satisfaction . He wis most ably supported by his olli : ers and hrj thanked them . That occasion was the crowning point in his life , in the presentation of the splendid banner . He hoped at the end of his year of oilier ; it would b ; fully acknowledged he had done his duty .
The toast of "The Initiates" was most cordially given and duly responded toby them all . As also that of " The Visitors , " who were heartily welcomed , and for whom rcp'Ld most forcibly Bros . Nairne , Hobley , Buckeridge , Stone , and Dowsett . The W . M . presented the toasts of "Ihe Past Masters , " " The Treasurer and Secretary , " also " The Ollicers , " in terms of eulogium , which were ably responded to . The Tyler's toast brought a most eventful evening to a close .
