MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS

On the 25 th inst . Bro . F . R . Farrow , W . M . 1196 , will rehearse the ceremony of raising to the Third Degree at the Urban Lodge of Instruction , No . 1196 . Mr . G . M . Edwards , who was for several years associated with the management of the Savoy Theatre , has been appointed acting manager of the Alhambra Theatre of Varieties .

The Prince and Princess of Wales , accompanied by the Princesses Victoria and Maud , and attended by Bro . Lord Suffield and others , were present at the eighth annual steeplechasesof the West Norfolk Hunt Club . The Countess of Lathom and the Ladies Bertha and Edith Wilbraham return from Jamaica at the end of the present month , and we are glad to say the health of the Lady Edith has been completely restored .

Bros . Lord Halsbury ( Lord Chancellor ) , Lord Ashbourne ( Lord Chancellor of Ireland ) , Lord George Hamilton , and Sir M . E . Hicks-Beach , Bart ., attended the meeting of the Cabinet which vvas held at the Foreign Office on Saturday last .

The Marquis of Lome laid the foundation-stone of a new wing of the National Orthopaedic Hospital on Tuesday , and made an earnest appeal to those present to assist in raising the £ 2500 which is required to complete the necessary extension .

We regret to hear of the death of Bro . Morgan Howard , Q . C ., who a few years since vvas appointed to a County Court Judgeship in Cornwall . Bro . Howard formerly represented the Dulwich Division of Lambeth in the House of Commons .

Bro . the Marquis of Hartington , M . P ., acting as the representative of his father , the Duke of Devonshire , Lord-Lieutenant of Derbyshire , presided at a county meeting held at Derby on the gth inst ., for the purpose of inaugurating the fund for the rebuilding of the infirmary in that town .

The Prince of Wales presided at a meeting held at Marlborough House on the 9 th inst . of the Reception Committee of the forthcoming Royal Naval Exhibition , when the Hon . Secretary announced the receipt of a letter expressing the intention of the Emperor of Germany to send live valuable pictures of naval subjects to the Exhibition .

At the regular meeting of the Ubique Mark Lodge , No . 411 , Bro . Major J . T . Ritchie , R . A ., W . M ., held at the Criterion , Piccadilly Circus , W ., on Monday , the 13 th inst ., Bro . F . H . Gough , of the Ubique Lodge , No . 17 S 9 , vvas advanced to the Degree of M . M . M . by Bro . James Montgomery , P . M ., D . S . G . W . Malta , and Bro . W . A . Weston vvas unanimously elected Worshipful Master for the ensuing year .

Princess Christian and her daughters , the Princesses Louise and Victoria , occupied the Royal Box at the Royal Italian Opera , Covent Garden , on VVednesday , when the opera of " Romeo and Juliet " vvas given . Bros , the Earl of Lathom , Sir Charles Hall , M . P ., and Sir W . Hart-Dyke , Bart ., M . P ., and Bro . the Earl and Countess of Londesborough were also present .

Bro . Lord Mayor Savory vvas theg-uest ofthe Shipowners ' Company at a banquet given , by permission , in Merchant Taylors' Hall on Tuesday evening . Bro . Lieut .-Col . A . B . Cook , the Master of the Company , presided , and among the other guests were Bros , the Marquis of Carmarthen , M . P ., the Earl of Cork , Viscount Dungarvan , Lord Norton , Sir Reginald Hanson , Bart ., Sir E . J . Reed , M . P ., and Sir Morell Mackenzie .

Bro . the Right Hon . G . A . F . Cavendish Bentinck , M . P . for Whitehaven , to whose illness we referred last week , died on the evening of the 9 th instant . The deceased vvas the only son of Major-General Lord Frederick Bentinck , C . B ., fourth son of the third Duke of Portland , and was

born in July , 1 S 21 . He vvas educated at Westminster and Trinity College , Cambridge . He vvas called to the bar in 1 S 4 G , and had sat in the House of Commons uninterruptedly since 1 S 59 , namely , for Taunton from that year till 1 S 6 5 , and then till his death for Whitehaven .

The Minnehaha Minstrels gave another capital entertainment at the Free Trade Hall , Manchester , on Saturday , the nth inst . The performance on this occasion vvas in aid of the funds of the East Lancashire Systematic Masonic Educational and Benevolent Institution and the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys . There vvas a large audience , many of the Masons wearing the regalia of the Craft . Bro . Martin Thomas , P . M ., the first VV . M . of the Minnehaha Minstrel Lodge , vvas the instigator of this creditable entertainment .

We are requested to give notice that the future meetings of the Ubique Lodge , Nn . 17 S 9 , will be held at the Criterion Restaurant , Piccadilly Circus , W ., on the second Mondays in the months of Maj' , August , November , and February . At the meeting- to be held on the nth May next , Bro .

Edwin Morris , late Royal Artillery , will be installed VV . M . for the ensuing year in succession to Bro . Major-General A . H . W . Williams , Royal Artillery . The meetings of the Ubique Lodge of Instruction , at the Victoria Mansions Restaurant , Victoria-street , S . W ., have been discontinued .

In view of the large number of orders in hand for steam and electric launches , tugs , & c , together with others promised and in course of negotiation , Messrs . Woodhouse and Rawson United , Limited , have resolved to extend their riverside premises , and have , therefore , just purchased a piece of ground situated close to Kew Railway Bridge on the Surrey side , with a frontage to the river of between

600 and 700 feet , the total area being about two and a half acres . For the buildings , the necessary plant and machinery to carry out the work alluded to above , arrangements have already been made . The company will also have good dock accommodation in connection with the

above , where tugs and barges , can safely lie while undergoing any necessary repairs and alterations to machinery , propellers , shafting or inspection of bottoms . The new workers are nearly opposite the two existing yards of the company and will , it is expected , be in working order in the course of the next two months .

Lord Mayor Savory presided at the annual festival held at the Hotel Metropole on Friday , the ioth inst ., in aid of King's College Hospital , when subscriptions were announced to the amount of nearly £ 2400 . Bro . Lord and Lady Brassey , who have been spending Easter in Rome , are expected to return to London for the season towards the end of the present week .

Bro . Mount Brown , S . W . of the John Carpenter Lodge , No . 1997 , was elected W . M . for the ' ensuing year at a meeting held at the Albion Tavern , on Friday , the ioth inst . Bro . Sir Algernon Borthwick , M . P ., will preside at the festival dinner which will be held on the nth May to

commemorate the 20 th anniversary of the foundation of the Chelsea Hospital for Women . " Grand Day " of Easter Term at the Middle Temple was duly celebrated on Thursday , the 9 th inst ., when the Prince of Wales dined with the Treasurer—Lord Coleridge—and the benchers in their fine old hall .

Mr . Passmore Edwards , of the Echo , has generously offered to build a free library and gymnasium in the populous district which lies about the frontier of Chelsea and South Kersington . The exact site is not yet determined . The Most Honourable the Marquis of Lome , P . C , K . T ., President of " Dr . Barnardo ' s Homes for Destitute Children , " has named Wednesday , 3 rd June , as the date

for the 25 th annual meeting of these institutions , which will be held m the Royal Albert Hall . As a memorial of General Gordon , the readers of the Boys' Owu Paper have raised a sum of upwards of £ 750 for the purpose of founding another ward in Dr . Barnardo ' s hospital . The subscribers include Messrs . Spicer Brothers ( Limited ) and Messrs . R . K . Burt and Co .

Mr . Deputy Hughes , as Treasurer of the London Temperance Hospital , has just received from the executors of the late Mr . George Sturge the sum of £ 2000 . As a "Census offering , " an anonymous correspondent has forwarded to the Deputy a donation of £ 50 .

Bro . A . T . Layton , ^ CC , J . P ., an Alderman ofthe Boro' of Croydon , has just presented a recreation ground to the people of South Northvvood . The opening ceremony was performed on Saturday by the Mayor of Croydon , there being a goodly gathering - on the occasion . The ground , it may be added , will be maintained by the Corporation .

A numerous and influential meeting of the supporters of the British and Foreign Bible Society vvas held at the Mansion House on Tuesday under the presidency of Bro . Lord Mayor Savory , there being also present the Duke of Connaught , the Archbishop of Canterbury , the Lady Mayoress , Sheriff Farmer , Bro . Sheriff Harris , and others . Among the principal speakers vvere Bro . the Lord Mayor—

to whom a cordial vote of thanks vvas passed for presidingthe Duke of Connaught , the Archbishop of Canterbury , and the Bishop of London . Sir Provo William Parry Wallis , G . C . B ., the senior Admiral of the Fleet , completed his 100 th year on Sunday last , the 12 th instant , having been born at Halifax , Nova Scotia , on the 12 th April , 1791 . The gallant officer first

smelt powder in 1 S 05 , and vvas second lieutenant in the memorable action between the British frigate Shannon and the American frigate Chesapeake , in which the former proved victorious and carried her adversary into Halifax . Lieut . Wallis , owing to his captain being wounded and his senior lieutenant killed , received the sword of the American Commander .

Miss Minnie Freeman , daughter of Bro . V . P . Freeman , has j ust been the recipient of a souvenir of the recent visit to Brighton of H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught , on the occasion of his installation as P . G . M . ofthe Mark Masons of Sussex . Miss Freeman kindly gave her services as vocalist at the luncheon , and , to mark their appreciation of her efforts , the Prov . Grand Stewards ( Bros . VV . VV . Turner ,

Jos . Farncombe , E . S . Medcalf , and T . Bullock ) have presented her with a gold bracelet , bearing the following inscription : "Presented to Miss Minnie Freeman by the Stewards of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Mark Masons of Sussex , for her vocal services on the occasion of the installation of his Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught as Prov . Grand Master , at Brighton , March ioth , 1 S 91 . "

Grand Master , several members of the Grand Lodge , and visitingf brethren , when special reference vvas made to the Grand Master ' s contemplated journey across the continent , and all present united in wishing him a safe and pleasant journey and speedy return to Adelaide . The people of Leeds are particularly proud of their grand organ , and on Saturday evening celebrated the thirty-third anniversary of its opening by a special concert in the Town Hall , which vvas largely attended . The organ cost G , ooo , and was first used at the opening of the Town Hall by the Queen in 1 S 5 S . Messrs . Gray and Davison , of

London , vvere the builders of the instrument , which vvas designedby Mr . Henry Smart and Bro . Dr . Wm . Spark , the present organist . It is upwards of 50 feet high and about 47 feet in width , and weighs nearly 70 tons . It has four manuel claviers , or rows of keys , of 61 notes each , and a

pedal clavier of extending from CCC to F , a compass of 30 notes . Dr . Spark has been the official organist to the corporation since the opening of the organ , and his weekly recitals on the instrument—one of the finest in the worldare much appreciated . Last year Dr . Spark gave 62 recitals , which were attended by 5 6 , 000 people .

A correspondent writes : Oxfordshire vvas very fortunate at the Girls' election on Thursday , the gth inst . They had two cases on the list , viz ., Mabel E . Coles and Mabel E . Messenger , and both got in on the first application , the latter being entirely due to the London Masons and friends of the late John W . Messenger .

The Council of the National Artillery Association announce that the Queen will again offer her prize of £ 100 to the best detachment in the annual contest at Shoeburyness . Among the other donors of prizes are the Prince of Wales , the Duke of Cambridge , the Secretary of State for War , the Duke of Westminster , Bro . the Earl of Limerick , and the Corporation of London .

Bro . Alex . W ' mchell , LL . D ., the eminent American scientist , lately deceased , was a member of the Craft . He vvas one of the organisers of the American Geological Society , State Geologist of Michigan , a member of the United States Geological Survey , and a professor in the University of Michigan . His published writings are of the highest authority . The Rev . Bro . Dr . Studley , of Evanston , 111 ., recently paid an earnest and glowing fraternal tribute to his memory as a Freemason and a scientist .

Tuesday being the 34 th birthday of the Princess Henry of Battenberg , the auspicious event was duly celebrated by the Queen and Court at Grasse . The town vvas illuminated and there vvas a torchlight procession and a brilliant display of fireworks in the garden of the Grand Hotel and in the gardens of the Villa Victoria . The Duchess of Albany and her children visited her Majesty and stayed to luncheon , while the Duke and Duchess of Rutland had the honour of being included in the Royal dinner party .

hreemasons throughout Cheshire and Lancashire will hear with regret of the death of their esteemed Bro . John Parry Piatt , whose remains vvere laid in the family grave at Bebington on Thursday last . He vvas perhaps the oldest Freemason in Cheshire , and he gave much time to

establishing the Cheshire Educational Masonic Institution , which owes its existence to his patient , untiring exertions . He took an active interest in the Masonic Charities . His simple life , kindly disposition , and readiness to help the orphan , widow , and friendless commtnd him to the esteem of all who knew him .

It has been arranged that the Prince of Wales will open the Royal Naval Exhibition , Chelsea , on behalf of her Majesty the Queen , on Saturday , the 2 nd of May . In accordance with an ingenious suggestion made by Bro . Sir George Chubb , a model of the new Eddystone lighthouse , standing about two feet high , has been made , and will be placed on a glass pedestal in front of the dais , and on the

moment arriving for inaugurating the exhibition , his Royal Highness will open a miniature door in the model by means of a small gold attachment , a gun will then be fired hy electrical communication , and simultaneously the Roya Standard will be hoisted on the top of the full-size model of the old Eddystone lighthouse which stands on the grounds , and is 170 feet high , and a miniature flag on the small model .

An opportunity vvas afforded on Wednesday of inspecting some of the designs for the Polytechnic which is shortly to be erected at Battersea . The design chosen by the Executive Committee , of which Mr . Evan Spicer is Chairman , is hy Mr . 'E . W . Mountford . The " elevation " shows that the

building will be externally of a very handsome characteran artistic acquisition to South London . It will have a frontage of about 2 S 0 feet in the Battersea-park-road , with a main entrance in the centre , an entrance for women at one end , and an entrance to the main hall at the other . born in July , 1 S 21 . He vvas educated at Westminster and Trinity College , Cambridge . He vvas called to the bar in 1 S 4 G , and had sat in the House of Commons uninterruptedly since 1 S 59 , namely , for Taunton from that year till 1 S 6 5 , and then till his death for Whitehaven .

The Minnehaha Minstrels gave another capital entertainment at the Free Trade Hall , Manchester , on Saturday , the nth inst . The performance on this occasion vvas in aid of the funds of the East Lancashire Systematic Masonic Educational and Benevolent Institution and the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys . There vvas a large audience , many of the Masons wearing the regalia of the Craft . Bro . Martin Thomas , P . M ., the first VV . M . of the Minnehaha Minstrel Lodge , vvas the instigator of this creditable entertainment .

In view of the large number of orders in hand for steam and electric launches , tugs , & c , together with others promised and in course of negotiation , Messrs . Woodhouse and Rawson United , Limited , have resolved to extend their riverside premises , and have , therefore , just purchased a piece of ground situated close to Kew Railway Bridge on the Surrey side , with a frontage to the river of between

600 and 700 feet , the total area being about two and a half acres . For the buildings , the necessary plant and machinery to carry out the work alluded to above , arrangements have already been made . The company will also have good dock accommodation in connection with the

above , where tugs and barges , can safely lie while undergoing any necessary repairs and alterations to machinery , propellers , shafting or inspection of bottoms . The new workers are nearly opposite the two existing yards of the company and will , it is expected , be in working order in the course of the next two months .

The people of Leeds are particularly proud of their grand organ , and on Saturday evening celebrated the thirty-third anniversary of its opening by a special concert in the Town Hall , which vvas largely attended . London , vvere the builders of the instrument , which vvas designedby Mr . Henry Smart and Bro . Dr . Wm . Spark , the present organist . It is upwards of 50 feet high and about 47 feet in width , and weighs nearly 70 tons . It has four manuel claviers , or rows of keys , of 61 notes each , and a

pedal clavier of extending from CCC to F , a compass of 30 notes . Dr . Spark has been the official organist to the corporation since the opening of the organ , and his weekly recitals on the instrument—one of the finest in the worldare much appreciated . Last year Dr . Spark gave 62 recitals , which were attended by 5 6 , 000 people .

It has been arranged that the Prince of Wales will open the Royal Naval Exhibition , Chelsea , on behalf of her Majesty the Queen , on Saturday , the 2 nd of May . In accordance with an ingenious suggestion made by Bro . Sir George Chubb , a model of the new Eddystone lighthouse , standing about two feet high , has been made , and will be placed on a glass pedestal in front of the dais , and on the

moment arriving for inaugurating the exhibition , his Royal Highness will open a miniature door in the model by means of a small gold attachment , a gun will then be fired hy electrical communication , and simultaneously the Roya Standard will be hoisted on the top of the full-size model of the old Eddystone lighthouse which stands on the grounds , and is 170 feet high , and a miniature flag on the small model .

An opportunity vvas afforded on Wednesday of inspecting some of the designs for the Polytechnic which is shortly to be erected at Battersea . The design chosen by the Executive Committee , of which Mr . Evan Spicer is Chairman , is hy Mr . 'E . W . Mountford . The " elevation " shows that the

building will be externally of a very handsome characteran artistic acquisition to South London .
