Mark Masonry.

There was one advancee on the programme of business to be performed , buti nfortunately , he was unable to attend , and the installation of the W . M . was therefore oroceeded with immediately after the formal ceremonies of the opening of thelodge , nd the reading and confirmation of the minutes . Bro . Ramsev , P . M . the Treasurer of the lodge , took the chair of W . M ., and installed Bro . Jame ; Speller S . W . and VV . M . elect , as Master of the lodge for the year . Bro . VV . M . Stiles was invested as LP . M ., and late on during the proceedings he was presented with a handsome jewel of a

pasl Master . The other brethren appointed to office were Bros . T . G . A . Burn ! , S . W . ; \ V , J . Hakim , J . W . ; John Ramsey , P . M ., Treas . ; William Maple , P . M ., Sec . ; William Drew , M . O . ; Harry Wilson , S . O . ; John Henry Roach , J . O . ; Thomas prescott , S . D . ; James John Chapman , J . D . ; Ernest M . Money , P . M ., D . C . ; Alfred Thomas Trehearne , l . G . ; James Page Geary , Stwd . ; and A . G . Young , Tyler . Bro . Ramsey delivered the addresses to the Master , Wardens , Overseers , and

brethren , after which the lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to Freemasons ' Tavern , where a beautiful banquet was awaiting them , among the most noticeable features of which was the way the menu was prepared . Being beautifully printed , along with the words of the songs , it was encased in a handsome Russian leather cover , which no doubt the brethren were indebted to the excellent taste and consideration of the new W . M .

The usual toasts followed the banquet , and they were interspersed by soms excellent singing by Misses Amy Fletcher and Theresa G . Kellaway , and Bros . Charles Chilley and Egbert Roberts , the musical arrangements being under the direction of the latter brother . Bro . Matier , G . Sec , responded to the toast—which includes "The Grand Officers , " and in doing so he said that the good deeds of Lord Euston and Lord Dungarvan were ever before the brethren who knew the enormous amount of trouble , pain , and time Lord

Euston spent over the various duties with which he was entrusted . They also knew what Lord Dungarvan did for the benefit of the Order . The other Grand Officers were brethren of light and leading in the Degree and were esteemed all round . Some of them were members of the Old Kent Lodge , like Bro . Ramsey . Others were present—Bros . Hogard , James Terry , R . Clowes , H . J . Lardncr , and last , not least , Dr . Mickley , whom they congratulated most heartily on something that was coming to him in the shape of honour . The officers of the Mark Degree were not men of an inferior

class , and they heartily desired to perpetuate that high honour . He wished the W . M . every success , happiness , and prosoerity during his year of office . Bro . W . M . Stiles , I . P . M ., in proposing the toast of "The LP . M ., said they had had a brother installed as W . M . of the lodge that day who had earned the high regard which all the brethren had for him in the Province of Essex , in London , and everywhere that he had mixed in Masonry , and that justified him in saying the brethren of the Old Kent were proud and pleased to see so estimable a brother in the chair of the Old Kent .

Bro . Speller had gone through the several offices in the lodges and was beloved by all the brethren . It was to such a brother he asked the brethren to do honour by drinking that toast . Bro . James Speller , W . M ., in response , said he could not express his appreciation of the kind words of Bro . Stiles or of the heartiness of the brethren in r : ceiving them . In connection with Masomy he had done something which he had found difficult , but the greatest difficulty was to respond to the toast of his health . He had t > thank the brethren of the Old Kent Lodge for electing him to be their President , and he thanked

Bro . Ramsey , P . M ., for installing him . That old lodge possessed many Past Misters , and it had been his ambition and aim to emulate the best of them . That he should do , and he thanked the brethren for their kindness to him that evening . Bro . James Speller , W . M ., proposed " The I . P . M ., Bro . W . M . Stiles , " who had been such a good and worthy brother to preside over them during his year of office so genially and kindly . During his year he happened to be Grand Treasurer in the Craft . He had many qualities , but he would not go into them , as he did not want to make a fuss about them , but one good one was he had cemented the good old lodge together .

llro . W . M . Stiles , I . P . M ., in reply , said he was reminded that he was a brother of many qualities—well , perhaps some good , some bad , so ^ ie indifferent . He hoped he had some good ones ; the bad ones he could face at any time . He was proud to have passed the chair cf the Old Kent—his mother lodge—where he had met some good old friends . The VV . M . had said that he ( Bro . Stiles ) had cemented the good old Iodge together dining his year . At least , he had tried to do it . He looked with pride on that being done . He was proud of being a Past Master of the lodge , and he-appreciated the jewel they had voted and presented to him . He should always look on it as a souvenir

of a very happy year of office . Bro . J . M . McLeod , i . i responding to the toast of "The Visitors , " said he wished he had been one of the Grand Officers , as that would have saved him a reply , and he cculd have enjoyed himself for the rest of the evening . But thanking the lodge then on behalf of all the visitors , most of them , he said , knew the hospitality of that lodge ; he himself did , for he had been there before , and he hoped to be there in the future . The visitors had been treated right worthily , and they congratulated Bro . Speller on reaching the chair of that Old Kent Lodge , which had already be : n filled by som j thoroughly Rood old Masons ; but Bro . Speller was a fitting representative of them . All who knew him were aware that he was a rare good chap .

uro . James Stephens also replied , and congratulated Bro . Speller on attaining the chair , and the lodge on having such a successful meeting , and a brother in it so capable as Uro . Ramsey to perform the installation ceremony . Bro . Westlake likewise replied , together with Bros . J . Terry , Tamburini , Lyon , Lardner , and Mickley . . To the toast of "The Installing Master and the Past Masters , " Bros . Ramsey and Skinner responded .

' mo . Maple replied to the toast of "The Treasurer and Secretary , " Bro . Ramsey adding a few words . Bros . Burns , Money , Prescott , and Chapman responded to the toast of " The tracers , " and the Tyler's toast closed the very pleasant proceedings .

BRO . EDWARD JAMES WICKENDEN , Worshipful Master of the Skelmersdale Lodge , No . 1599 , was initiated in the Skelmersdale Lodge , in February , 1 S 8 9 , by Bro . Enos Howes , P . M ., P . Z ., who made such an impression upon him on that occasion that Freemasonry immediately became an essential part of his existence , and from that date he has been most enthusiastic in everything appertaining to the Craft . In April , 1891 , our brother was appointed I . G ., and he has since filled every successive office in

such a manner as to secure the highest praise and warmest thanl s of the members of his lodge . He was exalted into Royal Arch Masonry in the Albion Chapter , No . 9 , in June , 1890 , and in this Degree he takes especial interest . At the present time he is Scribe N . of the chapter , having been P . S . for two years in succession . He has been in practice as an accountant in the City for the last 10 years , during which time he has held many important trusts . From our knowledge of Bro . Wickenden ' s working , we have no doubt that he will add to the great reputation of the Skelmersdale Lodge , which is to be congratulated in having so efficient a Master . A full report of the proceedings of Bro . Wickenden ' s installation appears in another column .

BRO . EDWARD JAMES WICKENDEN , Worshipful Master of the Skelmersdale Lodge , No . 1599 , was initiated in the Skelmersdale Lodge , in February , 1 S 8 9 , by Bro . Enos Howes , P . M ., P .
