Bro . Attenborough did well in bringing prominently to the notice of the Quarterly General Couit of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls the cases of the two children whose petitions had been approved of by the Petitions , but rejected by the General , Committer , on the ground that the fathers of the girls had ceased
to be subscribing members to a lodge or lodges many years before their respective daughters were born , and Bro . Frank Richardson , acting , wc presume , as the legal adviser of the Institution , did equally well in promising that the cases should not be finally disposed of until counsel's opinion on the point at issue had been taken .
* * * The point at issue may be set forth briefly . Law 79 provides that " no girl shall be eligible as a candidate for admission to the benefits of the Institution " until a proper petition has been presented in her behalf , " nor unless her father has been a subscribing member
to a lodge under the English Constitutions for seven years , " or in certain excepted cases " for three years . " As regards the two girls , whose cases were thus brought forward by Bro . Attenborough , the fathers had , in both instances , been subscribing members for the prescribed
seven years ; but in the case of one of the children , the father had ceased to be a subscribing member 19 years , and in that of the other child , 16 years , before he married and the girl was born . The Petitions Committee had decided that these two girls were

eligible in accordance with the law , but the Geneial Committee set aside this decision , and declared that the children were ineligible , on the ground that the fathers had ceased to be subscribing member ;; . * * * Bro . Attenborough , in the course of his very temperate speech , had pointed out that in a precisely similar case
which had been rejected by the Council of the Boys School—which corresponds with the General Committee of the Girls' School—the Deputy Grand Registrar had given it as his opinion that the said Council had exceeded its powers '' in rejecting a case
on those grounds . " It was on this account that Bro , Richardson announced that the Girls' School would take counsel ' s opinion on the merit of its two case ? . We shall , therefore , leave the matter as it stands until we hear that an opinion has been taken and the point settled in accordance with that opinion .
* * * It is satisfact : ry to know that Bro . Richard Eve ' s resolution giving the Board of Management of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys power "to purchase a site and to erect thereon a new school , and to dispose of the present land and premises to the best
advantage , was passed by the Quarterly General Court on the ioth instant . There was a numerous attendance of Governors an ! Subscribers , and the question was discussed very fully , an amendment by Bro . J . S . Cumberland that the matter should be deferred till the October Court , in order that , in the
" meantime the general body of subscribers may learn what the Board proposed to do , where they proposed to go , what they proposed to pay , and wh it the cost of removal will bs , " being rejected by a substantial majority . A subsequent amendment by Bro . Slyman
to the effect "That the Bjard of Management commit themselves to no new purchase scheme without the approval of the October Court " shared the same fate and the original motion , as we have before said , was carried .
* * This is as it should be , and for two most excellent reasons . Firstly , as Bro . Keyser pointed out , the negotiations would be of a very delicate character , and it was necessary they should be conducted by a small body . In the next place , the body to whom
full powers were delegated to conduct these delicate negotiations must have the confidence of the general body of Governors and Subscribers , and it was stated more than once during the discussion on Bro . Eve ' s motion—and it is , indeed , allowed on all hands—that the Board of Management enjoys that confidence to
the fullest extent . Moreover , Bro . Eve himself pointed out that however much power might be given t- > the Board of Management they would not think of exercising that power until the course they proposed to adopt had received the sanction of the Court .
Under these circumstances , the general body of Subscribers may rest contented in the knowledge that the Board of Management have no idea of committing them to a course which is unlikely to command their full sanction and approval . * * *
