M ., in recognition of his services as W . M . during the year . Bra . Harrison , in thanking the brethren for that further mark of their favour , saiu he should look on it , as long as he lived , with feelings of the greatest pleasure , as a reminder of the

happiest year of nis Masonic life , and in after years , when many of the brethren were in distant parts of the empire , it would remind him of those hearty shakes of the hand and smiling friendly faces , so sure an index of the kindly hearts within , with vvhich he had been so many times

welcomed by the brethren . 1 he jewel was manufactured by Bro . George Kenning , and consists of a five-pointed star , in the centre of which appear the emblems of a Past Master in the Mark Degree , with a bar of fern leaves , and an artistic scroll , on ribbon , bearing the words " Military Mark Lodge , 54 . "

The lodge vvas then closed , and the brethren adjourned to the banqueting room . "The Queen and Mark Masonry , " and " The M . W . Grand Master , H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , " were the first toasts honoured . Bro . Glasspool , on behalf of " The Grand Officers , "

returned them his hearty thanks . The W . M . next proposed "The Rt . Worshipful the Prov . Grand Mister , the Rev . Canon Portal , M . A ., the Worshipful , the Deputy Prov . Grand Master , Bro . Lovelands , and the Prov . Grand Officers , Present and Past , " and as they had with them that evening the Prov . Junior Grand Warden , he wished to couple the toast vvith his name .

The toast vvas drunk vvith the honours of the degree . Bro . Prescott rose to return thanks on behalf of the Prov . Grand Lodge . He said they were fortunate that evening in having their D . P . G . AI . present , and he ( the speaker ) was pleased to be able to say that the D . P . G . M . was very pleased indeed at the prosperous state of the Military Mark Lodge , and at the work of the lodge as far

as it went that evening . Mark Masonry in the province vvas extending very much , and he had no doubt that under the regime of such officers as were present that evening that extension and proficiency vvould still further obtain . Bro . Harrison , I . P . M ., in proposing the next toast said he did so with the greatest amount of pleasure . He had known their present W . M ., Bro . Taylor , for a long time

, and he could conscientiously say of him that whatever he did he did well . Bro . Taylor had followed him ( ihe speaker ) through the various degrees , step by step , and now he had succeeded him in the chair of the lodge . Everything Bro . Taylor had done had been an improvement upon his predecessor in that respect , and he felt quite sure that the office he had now taken he would maintain vvith honour .

It was with the greatest pleasure he proposed his health . This toast having been received with Mark Masonic honours , The Worshipful Master rose to return the brethren his very sincere thanks for the most hearty manner in vvhich the toast had ben proposed and received , and also to thank them ( for he forgot to do so in lodge ) for the high and

honoured position in which they had placed him . He vvas fully aware that in undertaking the duties ot that office it would prove no light task , when the position vvas held in connection vvith the other Degrees in Masonry to which he belonged . However , there was one thing of which he could assure them ; he had taken that office vvith the intention of carrying out the duties in the future in the same

manner , as ( from the way in which they had received that toast ) he gathered they considered he had done in the past . He vvas exceedingly obliged to their Past Master , Bro . Harrison , for the manner he had spoken of him , though he fancied he had rather overstepped the mark . He hoped when it came to his turn to install his successor the words which had been spoken af him now would come true .

They would then have a better opportunity of judging whether what he had said was right , and he hoped and trusted it may be so . The Worshipful Master then gave " The Mark Benevolent Fund , " which was coupled with the name of Bro . Stone , who , in responding , explained at some length the

position and objects of the Fund . The Woishipiul Master said the next toast vvas one that would be received with enthusiasm . In Mark Masonry as well as in the Blue , one of their first and grand principles vvas that of entertaining visitois . He coupled with the toast the name of Bro . Mead .

Bro . Col . Mead , in responding said , next to the Charities , amongst Masons , was the haimony and hospitality they always displayed one to another . The Worshipful Master next gave "The Installing Master and other Past Officers of the Lodge . " He was

" He was
