145 STEWARDS—LONDON ... ... ... £ 5 , 306 1 G 145 STEWARDS—PROVINCES ... ... ... £ 5 , 798 7 6 GRAND TOTAL ... ,,, £ 11 , 104 9 ° In conclusion , Bro . Binckes said that the province represented by their excellent Chairman , to whom they owed a debt of gratitude for coming to the rescue at the eleventh hour—the Province of West Yorkshire—brouo-hi

them £ 600 . West Yorks vvas always forward in the support of the Institutions . He had to make one or two special announcements , and he was proud to make them for the first time , because none of the Masonic Institutions had ever before received contributions from our greatest City Companies . Major Joseph had given in an amount of £ 138 , and had told him that , while he could not guarantee anything further tnan that sum , he hoped

to contribute further betore the 31 st Marcn next . But he ( Bro . Binckes ) would not hesitate , even in the presence of Major Joseph , to surmise that the grant of 50 guineas from the Goldsmiths' Company was due to their constant supporter , Bro . Smyth , but that amount appeared in the list of Major Joseph . Twenty-five guineas Irom the Skinners' Company , and further than that 25 guineas from the Vintners' Company . He had also the

satisfaction of announcing that her Majesty s 37 th annual donation of ten guineas vvas included in tne returns , and expressed a hope that the loyalty of the brethren would ensure a continuance of her Majesty ' s support to the Institution . The whole result of the festival was disappointing ; there were 13 lists to come in ; the totals were : London , ^ 5306 ; tne Provinces , ^ 579 ^ ; together - £ 11 , 104 .

Bro . GEO . LAMBERT , as Prime Warden of the VVorshipful Company of Goldsmiths , said : 1 beg most respectlull y to say that we were most deli ghted when Bro . Josephs applied to the Worshipful Company for a donation , and I wish that Bro . Josephs had applied in the right way , and had he consulted the Prime Warden of the Company you vvould not have been landed vvith ^ 50 , but you would have received a very much larger and handsomer

donation . I here is onl y one way to get to our hearts , and that is the ri ght way , and though we are much indebted to Bro . Josephs , I only wish that he had asked me upon that occasion , and 1 should have been able to aid him very much further . Representing as I do one of the largest Companies , I may say that we vvill . endeavour , notwithstanding any remarks that may be made , to augment that donation . It is a rule that no one can apply again within

three years , but I have no hesitation in saying that it the Worshi p ful Company is approached in a proper manner we shall respond vvith a great deal of pleasure . As Prime Warden of the Company I will tell them that which you have just now read , and I vvill spare no efforts while I am Prime Warden to render good suit and service to the Institution . The CHAIRMAN . - I will now trespass on your attention for a very few

brief moments , whilst I try to call your attention to a duty vvhich 1 have been called upon to perform this evening . It is one which is not in the legular list ot toasts , but it is one which , when I announced it to you , will , I believe , be received with most appropriate satisfaction and applause . Brethren , you are aware that some time ago a most important and influential Committee was formed , having ior its President the Earl of Lathom ,

R . W . Deputy Grand Mas ' . er , and naving a great many Vice-Presidents of this Committee , but having for its Chairman Bro . R . VV . Stewart ; and the object ol this Committee was to recognise in some suitable manner the valuable services and the long experience of a distinguished officer of the Boys' School , and to offer to him , on this occasion , some recognition of his long services to the Craft . It falls to my lot this evening , at tne request of

various members of the Crait by whom I have the honour to be surrounded , in their name and on their behalf , to give expression to the wishes of this Committee , and to presentthe recipient of it vvith the result of their labours , and with their best wishes for his services , and gratitude to him during 25 years of service to the Boys' School . I need hardly tell you that the gentleman to whom I shall shortly , in your name , present this purse and this

piece of plate , is no other than the Secretary of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys . Brethren , did time permit , or did your patience permit , I should have liked to announce to those who are not so well acqu ? inted vvith his services as I am a recapitulation from the Freemasons' Chronicle ot his services during that time ; but I will ask you to take this copy of the

Chronicle , and then you will find what he has done during those long years on behalf of Masonry and Charity . M y duty , on your behalf , is to ask Bro . Binckes to accept this expression ol your appreciation oi his services in a piece of plate and this pocket book , which contains a cheque lor no small amount , which testifies our recognition of his services . The p late bears this inscription * . —

Pressented to BRO . FREDERICK BINCKES , Together with a purse of four hundred guineas , In recognition of his services For upwards of twenty-five years As Secretary R . M . I . Boys , and as

Grand Secretary Grand Lodge M . M . M ., 14 th June , 1 SS 7 . Then , addressing Bro . Binckes , the CHAIRMAN added , Bro . Binckes , without further comment , as the patience of the brethren is becoming exhausted , I present you with this piece of plate with this inscription , and I hand you this pocket-book with a cheque for the amount named . Bro . BINCKES , in returning thanks , said that thc brethren must very
