Indeed , the opinion of most of those present was , that it was too soon ended , and at least one of the audience was forcibly reminded of an incident in the career of the celebrated Weller family , and the remark of the elder Mr . ANNUAL SUMMER BANQUET OF LODGE ST . JOHN , No . 1306 .
The annual summer banquet in connection with this lodge was held on Wednesday , the 1 st inst ., at the Royal Forest Hotel , Chingford . Although by no means a brilliant day , there was no rain to speak of , so that the company were able to enjoy the opportunity for a look at the forest , which is now at its best . About half-past two o'clock they
assembled for dinner , which was served in the banqueting room at the Forest Hotel in the recherche style for which the establishment is noted . Bro . J . Magrath , the I . P . M ., presided , in the absence of the W . M . ; Bros . Holdom , S . W ., and Twinn , J . W ., occupied the vice-chairs , and among the company were Mrs . Magrath , Master Magrath , Bro . Veal , P . M ., Mrs . Veal , Miss Veal , Miss Holdom , Mrs . Twinn , Bro . Hardy , Mrs . Hardy , Miss Hardy , Bro . Wise ,
Mrs . Wise , Miss Wise , Bro . Oppenheim , Mrs . Oppenheim , Bro . Dickson , Mrs . Dickson , Bro . Daw , Bro . Hausmann , Bro . G . J . King , Mrs . King , Bro . J oslin , Bro . Allan , Bro . F . H . Dale , Bro . Stichling , Mrs . Stichling , Bro . Parkhurst , Mrs . Parkhurst , Miss Parkhurst , Bro . Bullwinkle , Miss Bullwinkle , Bro . Bayley , Bro . Fortescue , Mrs . Fortescue , Miss Fortescue , and others . The dinner having received due attention and evident
appreciation , a few customary toasts were honoured j " The Queen and the Craft , " " H . R . H . the Prince of Wales and the Royal Family , " being followed by the toast of the day , "The Lodge of St . John . " Bro . Magrath , in giving this toast , spoke of the healthy and prosperous state of the lodge , and connected with it the name of Bro . Holdom , S . W ., who , after the toast had been duly honoured , responded with the brevity which he claimed as his
characteristic in speechmaking . Bro . VEAL then , in his peculiarly humorous fashion , proposed " The Chairman ; 'and " The Vice-Chairman , " "The Visitors , " for whom Mr . Gerrard King replied , and "The Press " having each been honoured , "The Secretary " was proposed , and recognition was made of the services rendered by Bro . Twinn in arranging the necessary details in connection with the event of the day . The toast of " The
Ladies was the final one , and this was properly received , the important but pleasurable duty of responding on their behalf being allotted to Bro . F . H . Dale . In the course of the proceedings songs were given by Bros . Veal , Hardy , and Twinn , and Bro . Gerrard King caused much amusement with his well-known recital , " Trades and Callings . "
After dinner the company dispersed for a further enjoyment of the outdoor attractions of the spot , and reassembled in the evening for some music and dancing , among the appreciated items in the programme being the pianoforte performance of the overture to "Zampa" by Master Magrath , the necessary accompaniment to the dancing being provided by Mr . FREEMASONRY IN HAMPSHIRE .
The long and interesting sketch we gave last week of the excellent work accomplished by Freemasonry in Hants and the Isle of Wi g ht would be wanting in one very important particular if we omitted to state that the province can now boast of a Masonic Educational and Benevolent
Association , which is established for the purpose of raising a fund to be applied to educate , clothe , and advance in life the children of Freemasons of the Province of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight , whether the father be living or dead , and to afford relief , or assistance , whereconsidered desirable , to Freemasons of or in the said province , and their families , a « id generally to promote the cause of Masonic Charity ; and will consist of a Patron , Patroness , President , Vice-Patrons ,

Vice-Presidents , a Treasurer , Secretary , an Honorary Solicitor , and an unlimited number of Governors and Subscribers . The bye-laws , which have severally been most carefully considered , were principally drawn up by Bro . George Felton Lancaster , P . P . G . J . D ., whoinitiated the movement for establishing such an Association at the Provincial
meeting held August Sth , 1 S 84 . He may be congratulated now on the success of the scheme , as donations are being numerously promised , and by means of these we may hope soon to see it in active operation . We may add that it is not started in opposition to the London Charities , but as supplementary to them , and we have no doubt it has before it a long and useful career .

THE RECENT BOYS' SCHOOL FESTIVAL .

M . 194 , occupied the chair , and the Treasurer ' s accounts having been presented and approved , votes of thanks to the Marquis of Hartington , M . P ., for presiding at the Festival , and to theotficers of the Board for the careful fulfilment of their duties were passed , and the Board was dissolved .
The Theatres.
THE THEATRES .
Mr . Pinero ' s original farcical comedy , " The Magistrate , " has passed its 120 th night , and , though the weather has been oppressive , the Court Theatre shows no signs of a falling off in the audiences , either in numbers or interest . We should not be surprised at " The Magistrate " going on for several months amusing those who are wise enough to go and see it .
* # # Mr . Hurst has written a capital farcical comedy for Mr . Thorne , now being played at the Vaudeville . In " Loose Tiles " the plot hangs upon a misunderstanding , which is kept up from the rise to the fall of the curtain . Mr . Hurst has founded his amusing play upon the misapprehension which causes a boarding-house to be taken
for a private lunatic asylum . The audience are at first made clear about the misunderstanding , and so readily anticipate much fun must follow , which it does , with the effect of keeping every one in roars of laughter . The cast is the usual Vaudeville company , with the addition of Miss Victor . To-night ( Saturday ) the popular manager , Mr . Sydney Alport , takes his benefit , when " Loose Tiles " will be played , and other attractions added to the bill .
* * Monday will be a red-letter day in the annals of the stage generally , and the Haymarket in particular . On that night Bro . and Mrs . Bancroft say " good bye" in their managerial capacity to the public . The Prince and Princess of Wales have signified their intention of being present at this farewell performance . It will be a scene never to be forgotten by those lucky enough to be present .
Several managers will change their programmes that night in order to take part in the farewell . Bro . Irving will substitute "The Bells" for "Olivia , " in order for him to arrive to speak a piece specially written by Mr . Clement Scott . Bro . and Mrs . Kendal , who are on the continent , will come across specially to take part . Mr . Kyrle Bellew will do the same , he having made his first appearance under the Bancrofts' management at the Prince of Wales '
Theatre . Among those who will join in this testimony of regard are Bros . Alfred Bishop , Lionel Brough , John Clayton , David James , Toole , Messrs . Arthur , Cecil , John Clarke , Pinero , and Forbes Robertson ; Mrs . Bernard Beere , Miss Buckstone , Mrs . John Wood , Mdme . Modjeska , Mrs . Leigh Murray , Mrs . Stirling , Miss Kate Phillips , Miss Ada Cavendish , Miss Linde Dietz , Mrs . Kendal , Mrs . Langtry , and Miss Ellen Terry .
Shall we venture to prophecy that after th is the theatre will remain closed until about the last Saturday in September , when the new managers , Mr . Edward Russell and Bro . Bashford , late captain in the Scots Greys , will commence their career with Hugh Conway ' s novel , " Dark Days , " dramatised by him and Mr . Cornyns Carr , the distinguished authors of " Called Back . " The play , we are informed , is replete with interest , maintained by some ot the most
striking and elaborate stage effects which have ever been placed before the British public . The cast , which has been especially chosen , comprises some of the most talented members of the dramatic profession , and will include Mr . Beerbohm Tree , Bro . Robert Pateman , and a late importation to the London stage—Mr . Barrymore—who displayed such remarkable force and finish of style in the late revival of Sardou's play , " Diplomacy . " Miss Lingard , who so
faithfully and naturall y pourtrayed the heroine in " Called Back" has been specially engaged for the heroine . Miss Lydia Foote will also lend her valuable aid . The scenery , which will be on an extensive scale , will be perfectly in accord with the traditions the house has gained under the regime of Bro . and Mrs . Bancroft , and Messrs . Walter Johnstone , Perkins , and Telbin have now nearly completed their task , and will provide some of the most charming stage pictures
which have ever been witnessed , even in this theatre . We heartily wish the new management all the success they deserve , for we know they are keenly alive to the responsibility they are undertaking , and feel sure that in their hands nothing will be wanting , either in the plays produced or for the comfort « f their audiences , to maintain the glories of the Haymarket as one of our London theatres to which every one , whether resident or visitor in town ,
makes it a matter of duty to go to . Mr . Edward Russell has served a long and valuable apprenticeship to the stage unders the banners of the late Colonel Bateman , Bro . Henry Irving , and Bro . Bancroft , and Bro . Captain Bashford has also had much experience , who , by marriage , has allied himself with the Bancroft family , and can be safely reckoned upon as a genial partner in the new regime . We will
venture another prophesy , that Sardou ' s next production will be brought out at this theatre , and not , as has been stated by certain contemporaries , elsewhere ; but we are in a position to affirm that the stage of the Haymarket will not be devoted entirely to plays of the type of " Called Back , " " Dark Days , " or " Fedora , " as the management will vary this by comedies by the best known English authors .

appreciation , a few customary toasts were honoured j " The Queen and the Craft , " " H . R . H . the Prince of Wales and the Royal Family , " being followed by the toast of the day , "The Lodge of St . John .

Kalischer , of Poplar .
Freemasonry In Hampshire.

The Recent Boys' School Festival.
