THE GIRLS' SCHOOL . To the Editor of the "Freemason . ' ' Dear Sir and Brother , I was not able to attend the meeting last week when Bro . F . FREEMASONS' CALENDAR FOR SUFFOLK . 1891-2 . This admirable publication , edited by the Provincia ] Grand Secretary , Bro . N . Tracy , must be invaluable to the members of such a thriving province , and its numerous details concerning all the Degrees ( and their officers ) worked in the county , render the Masonic

Year-Book for Suffolk almost as indispensable as the " Book of Constitutions . " The statistical information might well be arranged in a table similar to the excellent Calendars for the Craft and Royal Arch meetings . We have , however , made up the following totals . There are 22 lodges in the province , with 956 members , nine Royal Arch chapters , and 18 3 members , three

Mark lodges having 65 , one K . T . Preceptory , with 24 on the roll , and one Rose Croix chapter , with 42 members . The oldest lodge , No . 71 , Lowestoft , dates from 1747 , and the latest is No . 2371 , Felixstowe , of 1890 . The most striking figures of all , however , refer to the Central Masonic Charities , the total votes for which , with under 1000 members in the province , amount to 4578 ! We need not state that the "Suffolk

947 ] THE NEW MASONIC HISTORY . DIVISION IV . —CHAPTER I . Bro . John Lane , the author of " Masonic Records , 1717—1886 " ( an invaluable work to all Masonic students and a monument of indomitable perseverance and untiring energy ) , has compiled an admirable list of all the lodges warranted in America under the

English Constitution , 1733—1889 . The lodges are classified under the States , & c , where located , thus facilitating easy reference , and the notes are arranged in such a way that students cannot fail to appreciate them . Before the era of Grand Lodges there is evidence of brethren assembling in lodges in America , and

subsequently meeting independently , as well as proofs of the constitution of others never registered b y either of the British Grand Lodges . The total number of lodges warranted and noted in the list number 259 ; the " Athols , " or " Ancients , " warranting 31 . Out of the total ( 259 ) 21 still remain on the register of the

Grand Lodge of England .- The "Union" Lodge , George Town , 1813 , July 28 th , No . 358 A , now No . 248 , being the only one working under an "Athol " warrant . Another " Athol " warrant ( No . 204 A ) was issued , January 3 , 177 8 , to St . Augustine , Florida , but appears not to have reached its destination , the same number

being re-issued by the Athols in 1803 to the present Lodge of " Perseverance , " No . 155 , Liverpool . A special centenary warrant was obtained , dated April 3 rd , 1862 , by No . 213 A , constituted 1781 , July 3 rd , after an existence of only 81 years . This lodge purchased No . OA , originally issued 30 January , 1752 , to the

present " Kent" Lodge , No . 15 , London . This lodge became No . 8 A 27 th December , 1752 ; No . m then becoming No . pA , and being " declared Vacant , null & void" for non-payment 7 th August , 1754 . No . 50 A purchased that number in 1757 , which lapsed about 17 61 . No . 9 was once more sold for £$ Ss . in 1771 to

S . G . W . Clarke and others , and afterwards delivered up 3 rd September , 1777 , and purchased once more by No . 213 A for ^ 5 5 s . 20 th December , 1787 . How came this lodge to have a " Special Centenary Warrant ? " Doutless our distinguished Bro . Lane will have much to tell us upon this most interesting subject of "

Centenary Warrants and Jewels " in the work he is now preparing and has quite ready for the press . The volume will contain lithographic reproductions from photographs of all the centenary jewels issued , as well as other valuable information never published before . In perusing this new history , which is a splendid work ,

I observed a slight error at page 241 as to the number of lodges in Massachusetts . There are not six recorded in "Masonic Records , 1717-1886 , " but five , the ' Royal Exchange " Lodge being the St . John ' s Lodge , No . 1 , which met at the Royal Exchange Tavern , King-street , Boston , in 1735 . JNO . TAYLOR , W . M . 1402 .

BROXBOURNE . KingSWOOd Lodge ( No . 2278 ) . —A meeting of this lodge was held on Saturday , the nth inst ., at the new place of meeting at Broxbourne , which was presided over by Bro . J . G . Cobb , W . M ., who was supported by the following officers and brethren : Bros . John Fetch , Prov . G . Std . Br ., I . P . M . ; C . M . Coxon , S . W . ; H . T .

Bro . C . Bullock , P . M . 504 ; and Bros . Alderman T , Bateman Fox ( Mayor of Dewsbury ) , P . M . 20 S , P . P . S . G . W . West Yorks ; J . Driscoll , P . M . 30 ; F . Hallows , P . M . S 61 ; T . E . Carpenter , 270 ; and A . Streeter , Org . 2157 , The lodge having been opened , and the minutes read and confirmed , a ballot was taken for two candidates for initiation , which proved unanimous in favour of both . One of them ,

Mr . Arthur Ingram , being in attendance , he was initiated by the W . M . into the mysteries of ancient Freemasonry in a most able manner . The W . M ., Bro . Cobb , was then elected as Charity Steward and representative of the lodge on the Finance Committee of the province . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren dispersed , to assemble again at a later hour to dine .

The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were proposed by the W . M ., and duly honoured . TheW . M ., in proposing the toast of "The Provincia ! Grand Officers , " coupled with the name of Bro . Bullock , P . G . Sec , expressed the pleasure felt by the brethren at his presence amongst them on that occasion . They had been compelled by circumstances over which they had no

control to give him a great deal of trouble , but he had met them at all times with kindness and courtesy , and now that the difficulties of the removal of the lodge had been arranged , and they were on smooth water once more , they felt thankful to the Provincial Grand Master , Bro . T . F . Halsey , for the consideration he had shown them , and to the Provincial Grand Secretary for his exertions on their behalf .

The toast was very warmly received . Bro . C . Bullock , Prov . Grand Secretary , in replying , said he had a very lively recollection of the last meeting of the lodge which he attended at Elstree , of the amusements indulged in between labour and refreshment , and in a very genial , hearty , and kindly speech , which met with much applause , he wished the brethren success in their new home .

^ In replying to the toast of "The Visitors , " Bro . Bateman Fox , P . P . S . G . W ., referred to the connection which had been formed between the Provinces of West Yorkshire and Herts , through the medium of the Kingswood Lodge , for matters relative to Masonic Charities , and alluded to the satisfaction felt by the West Yorkshire brethren at the magnificent result of the Festival of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys .

Bro . Bullock , P . G . Sec , said that was a proud day for Freemasonry when the second largest amount ever collected for the Charities was announced , and the small Province of Herts had contributed £ 221 to that result . Ihe Boys' School had emerged from a cloud to bright sunshine . In his official capacity he attended many lodges , and he

felt he could , without flattery , compliment the Kingswood Lodge on its working . He should carry away p leasant memories of that evening . Bros . F . Hallows , P . M ., Carpenter , and Streeter also briefly replied . The Tyler ' s toast brought a very successful meeting to a close .

EAST MOLESEY . Cyclist Lodge ( No . 2246 ) . —A meeting of the above lodge was held at the Castle Hotel , on Saturday , tne nth inst ., when there were present Bros . Chas . A . « ter , W .
