The Worshipful Master , having given the usual loyal and Grand Lodge toasts , which were most loyally received and responded to , gave that of "The Prov . G . M . of Kent , Earl Amherst , " of whom he spoke in glowing terms , and whose health the brethren drank with great enthusiasm . "The D . P . G . M ., Bro . Eastes , and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers , Present and Past , " followed , and in putting

it the W . M . said he was pleased to see the Pattison Lodge had that year been highly honoured in the person of Bro . Cook , P . M ., who had been appointed to the distinguished position of Prov . G . Registrar , and with whose name he should couple the toast . Bro . Cook said the W . M . had referred to the dignity that had been conferred upon the Pattison Lodge by their

esteemed Prov . G . M . in appointing him ( Bro . Cook ) as Prov . Grand Registrar . That was just his opinion , for he certainly looked upon it more as an honour to the lodge than to any especial credit due to himself . It was unnecessary for him to remind them that the Pattison Lodge held a very high position in the Province of Kent , and therefore they could quite understand him , and also the W . M ., when he

declared it to be an honour more to the lodge than to himself . The province mustered on its roll some 58 lodges , so that they could not expect to receive the purple every year . He highly appreciated the honour , and thanked them most heartily for their kind reception of the toast . The I . P . M . then proposed the toast of "The W . M . /' saying that it was a difficult task to perform satisfactorily

to him . It was a case of " The king is dead ; long live the king , " and it certainly seemed to him a rather funny thing that he should have to propose such a toast . He said it gave him much p leasure to know that he was succeeded by Bro . Busbridge , who was one they might be proud of . He could speak of Bro . Busbridge because he knew him to be a perfectly honourable gentleman , and

he asked them to give him their-hearty support , and all those other virtues that were essential to the advancement both of the lodge and Freemasonry in general . The Worshipful Master , in response , said he did not merit the kind words said about him by the W . M ., but he would try to merit them , and would now thank them for their hearty reception of the toast . As he was a sort of new

born babe in his office , they must not expect a long speech from him , but he must say that he felt it a great honour to be placed in such an important and honourable position , in which he felt that he had the hearty good wishes of every brother of the lodge . ' He was proud of the position / and he was proud of the excellent Officers , Present and Past , who , as Past Masters of the

lodge , held or had held some of the highest offices in the province and in that lodge , which was acknowledged to be the toremost in the Province of Kent , and he said this , that he and every Past Master and officer of the lodge would do their utmost to maintain that high position and to be worthy of the offices to which they were called . It was a difficult job to follow such excellent Masons and English gentlemen

as those who had preceded him , but he asked every brother to feel that with them the success of the lodge in a very great measure remained . If they assisted him individually and collectively there must be a good year before him and them . He asked them to bring him work , to bring him good men , and good men only , men who would be an honour to the lodge . He asked his officers during the few

months that must elapse before they again met to prepare themselves for the work entrusted to them , so that it might reflect credit upon the lodge , and they might depend upon his hearty co-operation for the success and welfare of the Pattison Lodge . He then paid a high tribute to Bro . Penfold , the Installing Officer , for the splendid working of the installation ceremony , which he

wished every brother could have had the opportunity oi seeing , and resumed his seat amid great cheering . Bro . Penfold briefly replied , and thanked them for their kindly reception of his name . Bro . Jamblin proposed the toast of "The Past Masters , ' and congratulated the lodge not only on the quantity bui the quality of its Past Masters . It was the high prestigf

of the lodge and its Past Masters that made so many gentlemen join it , but they might take it that only one in every 20 could ever attain the rank of Master in it ; nor could more than one in three of its Past Masters expect to receive P . G . honours . He had recently laid himself open to a charge of disloyalty by endeavouring to make another yearly office in the province , but as to disloyalty , was

it disloyal for bees to swarm , was it disloyal for Masons in other parts of the world to form new districts , with Grand Officers of their own?—if not , neither was his desire to procure an additional yearly office disloyal . He gave them the toast and asked them to do all honour

to it . Bro . Hughes , in the course of a humorous speech , returned thanks , and the other toasts were " The Visitors , " "The Masonic Press , " "The Masonic Charities , " and " The Officers , " to all of which due honour was done , and so concluded a memorable and enjoyable function .

PLYMOUTH . Prudence Lodge ( No . 1550 ) . —The members of this lodge met in large numbers at the Masonic Hall , Princess-square , on Saturday , the 4 th inst ., when Bro . Charles Mutten , S . W ., was installed as W . M . for the ensuing year . Bro . A . C . Titherley , the retiring W . M ., presided , and the attendance was so large that it was found necessary to hold the meeting in the Provincial Grand

Lodge Room , in order to accommodate all the brethren , ot whom nearly a hundred were present . The board of Installed Masters alone numbering between 40 and 50 . The ceremony of installing the W . M . in the chair of K . S . was admirably carried out by Bro . A . C . Titherley , the retiring W . M ., and the remaining portions of the ceremony were ably performed by Bros . J . G . Kevern , who led the

salutations ; J . R . Lord , who delivered the charge to the W . M . ; C Philp , who addressed the Wardens , and R . G . Bird , who charged the brethren . The W . M . afterwards invested the following as his officers for the ensuing year : . Bros . A . C . Titherley , I . P . M . ; G . Evans , S . W . ; -E . Budge , J . W . ; C Philp , Treas . ; T . Goodall , Sec . ; H . Robins , S . D .: I . Penwarn , I . D . ; T . W . Griffiths , LG . ;

R . Sewell , D . C ; T . G . Edwards , A . D . C ; A . Roberts , Org . ; W . Pryor , W . Barrett , and W . A . B . Venning , Stwds . ; and VV . H . Phillips , Tyler . Bro . J . G . Kevern is the representative of the lodge on the Committee of Petitions , and Bro . Mutten is the Charity Steward . Bro . Philp , the I ' reasurer , presented a very satisfactory report , the balance in hand at the end of the financial year

being one of the largest ever known in the history of the lodge . It was decided to hold the annual excursion of the lodge on Saturday , the 18 th inst ., the route chosen being a trip up the River Tamar . Permission has been obtained from Col . Coryton to visit Pentillie , and from the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe , P . G . M . of Cornwall , to visit Cotehele , and the programme will also include a high tea at Calstock .

The W . M ., on behalf of the brethren of the lodge , nearly everyone of whom , he said , had readily subscribed to the testimonial fund , then presented the Treasurer of the lodge , Bro . C . Philp , and to the Secretary , Bro . T . Goodall , each with a handsome Past Master ' s gold jewel in recognition of their valuable services in these capacities , and as a mark of Masonic goodwill and esteem . Bro . Mutten remarked

that it was the glory of Freemasonry that it had associated with it so many men who devoted themselves heart and soul to the spread of its principles and the upholding of its best traditions . Prominent amongst them in the West of England were Bros . Philp and Goodall , whose love for Masonry was shown in the great interest they always took , not only in the lodge with which they were more

immediately connected , but in the Order at large . Having passed through all the other offices they had for many years voluntarily carried out the duties of Treasurer and Secretary with conspicuous ability , and with a devotion to duty that could not be surpassed in any lodge either in the province or out of it . The desire to recognise these services found expression at the last annual banquet , with the

result that a subscription was started , and without having to come upon the funds of the lodge at all , ' a sum was subscribed enabling the Committe ( Bros . Kevern , Goodman , and Pryor ) to purchase two very handsome Past Masters' jewels , each bearing an appropriate inscription . Bro . Mutten then presented the jewels to Bros .

Philp and Goodall , remarking that the lodge was largely indebted to them for the excellent position it occupied among the lodges in the province . Bros . Philp and Goodall briefly acknowledged the gifts , assuring the brethren that they would ever regard the jewels as among their most cherished Masonic emblems .

The lodge was then closed , and a large number of the brethren afterwards partook of light refreshment in the dining hall , the W . M ., Bro . C . Mutten , presiding . Several Masonic toasts were proposed . _ Bro . W . H . Powell , P . G . T ., responded for " The Officers of Grand Lodge and the Provincial Grand Officers . " "The Health of the W . M . " was proposed in eulogistic terms by Bro . Godfrey Evans , S . W ., and acknowledged by Bro . Mutten . Bro . H . S . Hill , P . M . 223 , replied for "The Visitors . " The toasts were interspersed with singing and recitations .

SOUTH ALL . Jersey Lodge ( No . 2163 ) . —A regular meeting was held at the Railway Hotel , on Monday , the 6 th inst ., when there were present Bros . John Tidmarsh , W . M . ; Meech , I . P . M . ; Howard H . Room , Prov . G . Sec ; G . Harper , S . W . ; W . Seward , P . P . G . Std . Br ., Treas . ; W . A . Cocks , Sec . ; C . Mead , J . D . ; W . C . Hall , P . P . G . Std . Br . , Stwd . ; A . J . Hanson , W . F . Sanger , C . C Sanger , B . G . Hanson , J . H . A . Mury , E . H . Moseley , E . Parnell , J . Webb , R . G . Pontifex , J . A . Webb , J . J . Fewkes , T . S . Hardman , H . Bishop , W . A . Buckland , and G . L . Duffin , Ty ler . Visitors : Bros . ; Mark Rawlings , J . W . 1894 , and A . Hardy , 3 S 2 . The lodge was opened , and the minutes of the last regular meeting were read and confirmed . A ballot was

taken for Mr . Henry George Usher , which proved favourable . A full evening ' s work then presented itself . Bros . H . Bishop and W . A . Buckland were raised to the Third Degree . Bro . T . S . Hardman was passed to the Second Degree , and Mr . H . G . Usher was initiated into the secrets and mysteries of the Order . The whole of the ceremonies was performed by the W . M . and his officers

in a highly efficient manner . The W . M . gave the traditional history in the Third Degree , and also delivered the charge in the First . The First and Third Degree working tools were presented by Bro . W . Seward , P . M ., and those of the Second Degree by Bro . Harper , S . W . The Secretary was requested to forward the hearty good wishes of the brethren for a speedy and complete recovery to Bro . Butters ,

who had recently undergone a very paintul operation , and also to convey a message of sympathy and condolence with three brethren who have recently sustained a heavy family bereavement . The W . M . then gave an account of his Stewardship at the recent Anniversary Festival of the Girl ' s School , and thanked the brethren for enabling him to take un the sum of £ 28 14 s . on that occasion . In accordance

with a by-law of the lodge , the names of brethren eligible for the office of W . M . were read . The name of the present W . M . could not be included in this list , as he has been unanimously elected as the next Master of the St . Mark ' s College Lodge , No . 2157 . In response to an application of the brethren of the latter lodge , the M . W . G . M . has been pleased to grant a dispensation enabling him to be

installed before his present year of office has quite expired . " Hearty good wishes" having been tendered by the visitors , the lodge was closed . The brethren then sat down to an admirabl y prepared cold collation , which reflected the highest credit on Mrs . Freemantle , the hostess .

The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were duly honoured , Bro . Howard Room responding for that of " The Provincial Grand Officers . " Bros . Pontifex , Meech , Shury , and Passmore assisted Bro . Hall , P . M . and Organist , in presenting an enjoyable musical programme . Bro . T . S . Hardman delighted the company by his admirable reciting of "The last shot . "

J . G . Kevern , who led the

salutations ; J . R . Lord , who delivered the charge to the W . M . ; C Philp , who addressed the Wardens , and R . G . Bird , who charged the brethren . The W . M . afterwards invested the following as his officers for the ensuing year : . Bros . A . C . Titherley , I . P . M . ; G . Evans , S . W . ; -E . Budge , J . W . ; C Philp , Treas . ; T .
