787 ] — CANONGATE KILWINNING LODGE , No . 2 . As I understand that several have obtained copies of the capital History of the "Canongate Kilwinning Lodge , " by my friend , Bro . Allan Mackenzie , in consequence of my strong recommendation thereof * I should like to add that the celebrated photo-artist , J . Duncan Smith ( 1 , Hanover-street , Edingburgh ) , has published a reproduction of the famous picture of the Inauguration of Robert Burns ,

as Poet Laureate of the lodge , enlarged by a permanent process to 14 J by gi' inches , and mounted on Indian tinted plate paper , 27 by 2 o . f , representing a steel engraving , suitable for framing , for Masonic Halls and Banqueting Rooms , as also for private houses ( 12 s . 6 ~ d . each , net . ) A smaller size ( gi by 6 J- ) may also be had at 3 s . each , net . The other illustrations in the History are reproduced in a like manner , and I have no hesitation in describing them

in each case , as works of art , vvhich deserve a wide circulation , but the Burns' picture is the gem of the set , beyond question . Bro . Mackenzie has kindly sent me the following extract relating to Bro . Watson ' s picture of Burns , which has been so faithfully represented by the photo-artist aforesaid . —Minute of No . 2 , 12 th November , 1 S 45 . — " Bro . James Marshall stated that he had come to this meeting to re-introduce Bro . Stewart Watson , initiated during Winter 1827-8 . This Bro ,, he said , at the commencement of his professional career as an artist , had been patronised by Sir Walter Scott , whose portrait he painted at Abbotsiord , together with other works then extant . For some years past he has pursued his professional studies at Rome , and having returned to London , he wrote , enquiring among other matters , of the condition of Masonry in Edinburgh .

Bro . Marshall laid on the table a motion— 'That Bro . Watson have access to sketch the antique and picturesque interior of the Lodge vvith a view to his painting the Inauguration of Robert Burns as her Poet Laureate , ' the motion to be disposed of at a subsequent meeting . Meantime , all authenticated particulars to be collected . Bro . William Campell ( W . S . ) said that this motion had taken him by no greater surprise than delight . He had been 4 S

years a Mason ( and connected vvith this Lodge ) and had had many opportunities of giving testimony in favour of the particulars alluded to . He thought the proposition one deserving of every support . He had never been in a Lodge Room vvith Robert Burns , but he had travelled in his company and spent two of the most happy days vvith him at Ochtertyre Castle , the seat of Sir William

Murray . He vvas happy that he had lived to second such an admirable motion . " Bro . Campell was a member of No . 3 when Burns was invested as the Poet Laureate , and , therefore , his testimony is both valuable and convincing . ERITH . —St . John and St . Paul Lodge ( No . 615 ) . —Brethren may come and brethren may go , but , notwithstanding the fact that so many do come to the above lodge and then go never to return , the lodge goes on , let us hope so , at least , for ever , and it is quite an event , indeed , an epoch , in its history that on the Sth inst . the first W . M . vvho commenced his Masonic career in it passed

through the chair , and vvas invested its I . P . M . It has nevertheless a remarkable record , the incidents of which are perhaps better known to our esteemed Bro . F . Binckes , P . G . S . B . Eng ., and Secretary to the Boys' School , who vvas one of its earliest members , than to any one living , and his constant attendance at its annual meetings shows the interest he still takes in its welfare .

The lodge vvas opened by the W . M ., Bro . W . L . Doddrell , and the minutes of the previous meeting vvere read and confirmed , and the Auditor ' s report received and adopted . Bro . Herbert King , S . W . and W . M . elect , was then presented to the W . M . to receive at his hands the benefits of installation , and in due course that brother was placed in the chair , and afterwards appointed and invested

Doddrell having suitably returned thanks , Bro . Mitchell was re-elected to serve on the Charity Committee of the province , and , after the usual "Hearty good wishes " had been tendered from the visitors present .

honours . Bro . Binckes , whose name vvas coupled with the toast of "The Earl of Lathom , D . G . M ., and the rest of the G . Officers , Present and Past , " in responding , said that although the toast was a routine one , it was received that night — and in fact it always vvas received — with all the honours due to it , and more especially as it was first

and foremost an honour paid to the name ot Lord Lathom , of whom he might at once say that a more popular Mason , or one vvho had won more golden opinions from the brethren of the Craft of every Degree , whether in assisting their G . M . or Pro G . M . in Grand Lodge , or presiding over the destinies of the Craft as P . G . M . in his own Province of West Lancashire , did not exist . Now , vvith regard to the

rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , of vvhich body he felt it a great honour to belong , he could only say that they , one and all , did their duty in their several positions to the beat of their abilities , and in accordance with their obligation . They all took a great obligation when they accepted office to do all that in them lied to promote the success of Freemasonry , of that which was

one of the greatest organisations in the world for the promotion of human happiness and the mitigation of human misery . That obligation was a sacred trust , it carried with it high honours , and had its serious responsibilities j but every officer of G . Lodge vvhen he accepted the one accepted both , and he vvas proud to say they continued to receive , wherever they went , the commendation of the '

brethren . That vvas their reward . He offered the W . M . his congratulations on arriving at the chair , and his best wishes tor the prosperity of the lodge , and trusted both it and the W . M . vvould have a happy and successful year . As one of the old members of the lodge in years gone past , and with vvhich he had been so intimately associated , hc was exceedingly pleased to be vvith them once again , and was greatly obliged to Bro , Mitchell for thc assistance
