Reports Of Masonic Meetings.

received by him in his capacity of Steward at the late Boys' Festival . Freemasonry had made great strides , and he cautioned them not to admit every applicant , for it was not numbers but quality vvhich stamped the character of a lodge—in fact , numbers might weaken their strength , that might appear paradoxical , yet it was unfortunately in some cases only too true ; let them , therefore , look to

the character of their candidates , and admit none that would not be a perfect stone in that structure of which they were all so proud . He vvas sorry the toast had not fallen into the hands of a better spokesman , but on behalf of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , he tenderd them his most cordial thanks for their hearty reception of the toast .

The next toast vvas that of "The Right Hon . the Earl Amherst , R . W . P . G . M . of the Province of Kent , " vvhich was drunk amid a storm of applause . That of "Bro . J . S . Eastes , D . P . G . M ., and the rest of the Prov . G . Officers , Present and Past , " vvas coupled with the name of Bro . Weston , vvho , in response , thanked them for coupling his name with the toast , and assured them that

he felt proud of being a Past Officer of such a province as that of Kent . Earl Amherst vvas like the colonel of a regiment ; but no colonel , however good he might be , could get on without a good adjutant and good subordinates . Bro . Eastes vvas the adjutant of their regiment , and they were all ready to follow two such grand leaders wherever they went . He felt sure that if their

G . M . were present that night , and said he wanted a certain sum of money for the good of Freemasonry , or for any deserving object his lordship might recommend , he would get it . Every brother of the province must be proud of the splendid sum sent up from the province to the Girls' Festival , over ^ 3000 . He was proud to be associated vvith Bro . Mitchell in the Provincial Charity Committee ; of vvhich he

( Bro . Weston ) had been a member for over 11 years . It was the wish of his lordship that every member of that Committee should be , if possible , annually re-elected , so as to keep touch with the various cases which came before them , and Bro . Binckes vvould bear him out in his statement vvhen he said that the Charity Committee of the province vvas admirably managed , so that they knew to a

vote whether they could carry their candidate or not . He felt sure that success vvould ever attend their efforts , and trusted that next year they vvould vvork hard for the Boys' School ; for he thought it only right that all of the deserving Charities of the great Institution should be supported in turn . He cordially thanked them for the toast , and resumed his seat amid cheers .

The I . P . M . then proposed the toast of "The W . M ., " and said Bro . King vvas an old personal friend of his , and an old Mason and member of the lodge , and the harmony and unanimity with which he had been elected to the chair argued well for the prosperity of the lodge . He asked them to drink the toast vvith a good fire . The Worshipful Master , in response , said , that being the

first time he had occupied so important a position , he naturally felt a little nervous , but their hearty reception of the toast nerved him to thank them most heartily for it . Bro . Doddrell had alluded to the fact that he , Bro . King , vvas an older member of the lodge . Well he had been through the Warden ' s chair twice , and would go through again rather than take an office that he felt within his own mind

he was not capable of doing justice to ; but their unanimous approval of his candidature for the chair on that occasion showed him that he vvas now in a position to do honour to it . It vvas also a gratification to him to know that he was the first W . M . vvho had been initiated in the lodge , at least during the many years he had been a member of it , and he trusted that he might have health

and strength to do his duty in such a manner as vvould meet with their full and hearty approbation . The next toast was that of "The Initiates , " and Bros . A . C . and W . T . Doddrell and Bro . Hartland duly responded . Bro . Veal , in responding for " The Visitors , " spoke highly ot the hospitality of the lodge , and could not refrain from once again attending to the kind invitation of his

esteemed friend , Bro . Bilby , whom they appreciated so much in Hertfordshire , that he felt that if , for the good of Freemasonry , Bro . Bilby required his presence at Erith , it was his duty to come . Well , he came , and could safely say that his reception and , indeed , the reception of the visitors , was most cordial and hospitable . He then , in eloquent terms , spoke of the necessity of extreme care on the

formation of lodges , and strongly advocated the support of old ones in preference to founding nevv ones , and concluded by wishing the lodge and its Master every prosperity . Bro . Doddrell was heartily toasted as " The Installing Officer , " and , in the course ot an eloquent response , alluded vvith pride to the fact that during his year of office

he had had the pleasure of installing two of his own sons into Masonry . Bro . Mitchell having responded for "The Treasurer , " Bros . Watkins and Davis responded for "The Officers ; " and then the Tyler ' s toast concluded the proceedings , which were enlivened by some good singing and reciting , Bro . Roberts presiding at the piano in admirable style .

he felt proud of being a Past Officer of such a province as that of Kent . Earl Amherst vvas like the colonel of a regiment ; but no colonel , however good he might be , could get on without a good adjutant and good subordinates . Bro . The I . P . M . then proposed the toast of "The W . M ., " and said Bro .
