Octavius Marsland and Maurice ^ Miroy were raised to the Third Degree , the ceremonies in both

instances having been performed by the W . M . in a most perfect manner , together with the historical address , the visitors subsequently remarking on the excellence of the working . In consequence of the decease of Bro . John Charles , P . M ., the brethren appeared in mourning , and reference was made to his unexpected and lamented death . Bro . Barnes , P . M ., Sec , said : Worshipful Master , —I regret very much

to have to remind the brethren that I had occasion to send them a notice of the death of our esteemed Bro . John Charles , P . M . of this lodge , which took place at Brighton , on the 16 th ult ., at the age of 57 . I need hardly remind you , Worshipful Master and brethren , of the great esteem , I may say affection , with which our brother was held by all members who knew him . From the state of his health for the

last two years he had been unable to come much among us , but his kindly smile and greeting , his hearty shake of the hand were much missed ; he was a true Mason in every sense of the word , and in the lodge and out of it , not only to Freemasons ; but also to his fellow men , he was true and good ; many are those who have to thank him for kindly help , and he will be greatly missed . We mourn much tor our

loss . Bro . Charles was initiated in the Royal Athelstan Lodge on November Sth , iSCC , and after passing through the various offices , was unanimously elected W . M . in 1 S 7 S , and on the termination of his most successful Mastership was presented with a valuable jewel by the lodge to show the high esteem in which he was held . In February , iSSS , he was appointed Director of Ceremonies , and in December

1890 , was elected Treasurer of the lodge . There was nothing he could do for No . iq that he did not do ( in his power ) , and to the last he was loved by all . The W . M . then made some feeling references to the characlei and good work of the deceased brother , and proposed the following resolution : " That the members of koyal Athelstan Lodge , No . 10 , having heard of the

lamented death of their greatly esteemed Bro . John Charles , P . M ., desire to express their great sorrow to his wife and daughter at their sad loss , to offer them their sincere sympathy , and to express the hope that He who pities all His creatures will support and succour them in the hour of their great distress . '' This was seconded by his old friend , Bro . Henry Glenn , P . M . and Treasurer , and after

some further remarks respecting his high character in and out of the lodge , and reference to a notice in a church report of the useful work he performed in his capacity as Deacon , Committeeman , and Treasurer of the church he bejonged to in the neighbourhood of Gunnersbury , and being put to the meeting , was carried unanimously . The lodge business being ended , the brethren adjourned ,

as usual , to an excellent banquet , at which the loyal and Masonic toasts were proposed , interspersed by a wellarranged selection of music and songs , under the direction of Bro . W . P . Campbell-Everden . Being the anniversary of the M . W . Grand Master ' s birthday , a telegram of congratulation wis sent to his Royal Highnc . es at Sandringham , to which subsequently the W . M . received the following response :

" I thank the brethren for kind congratulations . " Al . HEET EllWARD . " In addition ti toe anthem "God Bless the Prince ol Wales , " ' Many happv returns of the day " was specially sung with excellent iffcct by Mr . Septimus Marsland .

Other Masonic business being disposed of , the brethren adjourned to refreshment , after which the usual loyal and Masonic toasts—including that of " The Grand Officers " —were duly honoured . In the intervals several brethren contributed to the harmony , till the Tyler ' s toast brought the proceedings to an end .

Duke of Edinburgh Lodge ( No . 1259 ) . — The installation meeting of the above lodge was held on Tuesday , the 7 th inst ., at the Eastern Hotel , Limehouse , under the presidency of Bro . W . J . Trappett , W . M . After Mr . Foggie was initiated , Bro . James Terry , P . M ., P . G . S . B ., Secretary of Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , took the chair , and , assisted by 10 Past Masters ,

installed Bro . Fielder into the chair of K . S . It is needless to add that Bro . Terry , although suffering from family trouble , was certainly at his best . he Masonic Charities , " referred to the fact that it was the 23 rd anniversary of the lodge . He had consecrated it in iS 6 q , and , with one exception , had installed every Master since . He had watched , with some interest , its progress , and must certainly congratulate the brethren on the success the lodge had attained , also their removal to more suitable premises : it certainly added to the dignity of the lodge .

With respect to the Masonic Charities , he thanked the brethren who had so nobly responded on their behalf last year in placing so large a sum as over £ 500 on P . M . Bro . Wakefield ' s list ( Bro . John Lusty assisting with a sum of £ 80 , collected privately ) . He need hardly ask the brethren not to relax their efforts . _ He felt sure what they had done in the past they would do in the future .

Other Masonic toasts were duly honoured . Bro . Wakefield , P . M ., in replying to the toast of " The Past Masters , " said he hoped the W . M . would avail himself of the opportunity of representing the lodge at the next Festival of the Old People , and if he did not he would again go up as Steward himself . Bro . Geo . Kidd , 22 9 1 , in replying to the toast of "The Visitors , " said he always thought that the West Ham

Abbey Lodge , No . 2291 , was the best lodge in the Eastend , but now he thoujht the Duke of Edinburgh was , or , at least , was second best , and he heartily thanked the W . M ., on behalf of the visitors , for the courtesy and kindness he had received that evening . The following brethren interspersed the toasts with som ; excellent harmony : Bros . Anderson , Limm , Curtis , Warner , P . M ., and others . The Tyler ' s toast closed a very enjoyable evening .

Arnold was passed to the Degree ol F . C . The death of Bro . Lansdown , P . M ., was referred to , and the Secretary was instructed to send a letter of condolence and sympathy to his widow and family .

After "Hearty good wishes" from the visitors , " the lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to the Holborn Restaurant , where an excellent banquet awaited them . The Worshipful Master afterwards proposed-the usual toasts , Bro . J . Lewis Thomas , P . A . G . D . C , replying to that of "The Grand Officers . "

Bro . Hardcastle , I . P . M ., proposed "The Health of the Worshipful Master . " He said theyhad been acquainted with him many years , and knew his worth and sterling qualities—words from him were not needed to enumerate them—as the W . M . preferred short speeches . He submitted the toast without further preface . This having been cordially received ,

The Worshipful Master acknowledged the compliment paid him . He said he had done the best he could for the lodge according to his abilities , and trusted that the brethren would feel satisfied with the choice they had made when they voted him to the chair . In proposing the toast of * 'The Visitors , " the Worshipful Master gave them a cordial welcome , and each of them

an opportunity of addressing the brethren . Bro . C . M . Coxon , Prov . G . D . Herts , in reply , said that the career of the W . M . had been on parallel lines with his own ; they had filled the various offices in their respective lodges ; were installed in the chair of K . S . in the same week ; they were members of the same provincial lodge ; and had each had the compliment paid them of being

elected honorary members of the same lodge of instru ; ii jn . He trusted they would be able to congratulate each other shortly on the completion of a successful year of ofiice . Bro . Watson , Treas . 1641 , replied briefly . Bro . H . Carter Pegg , igoj , said that was the lirst occasion on which he had visited a London lodge . As a country Mason he had somehow got an idea that Freemasonry was

carried out more strictly in country than in London lod ges . He was compelled to say that what he had witnessed in the lodge had done much to upset his preconceived idea , but after an experience of their Fourth Degree he must say that country lodges had much to learn if they wished to emulate the Granite Lodge in that respect . The W . M . proposed "The Past Masters , " and called on

Bro . Payne to respond . In doing so , Bro . Payne , P . M ., alluded in eloquent terms and with much feeling to the late Bro . Lansdown , P . M ., with whom he had been associated in private friendship as well as in the brotherhood of the Craft . Bro . J . Lewis Thomas , Sec , in replying for "The Treasurer and Secretary , " said it was a great pleasure to

him to give his best services to the lodge , especially under such an admirable Master as the present W . M . A more devoted Mason did not exist through the entire Craft . He endorsed the eloquent remarksof Bro . Payne , with reference to the loss the lodge had sustained by the death of Bro .

Lansdown . "The Officers of the Lodge" and the Tyler's toast closed the proceedings . The brethren were indebted to Bros . R . Evans , R . Harris , J . H . Watson , W . R . Emerson , and Parkinson for songs and » recitations , which did much to promote the enjoyment of the evening .

Kennington Lodge ( No . 1381 ) . —A meeting of this lodge was held at the Horns Tavern , Kennington Park , on the 7 th inst . Among those present were Bro . A . Lundie , W . M . ; Hearn , S . and it being unanimous , he was duly initiated . Bro . K . W . Brading was raised to the Third Degree , and Bro . C . Brock . passed to the Second Degree , the three ceremonies being abl y performed . A discussion then took place as to the advisability of remiving the lodge to other quarters , but the subject being of such importance , an adjournment of the matter was moved , seconded , and carried .

The lodge was then closed , and the brethren partook of an excellent banquet . Upon the removal of the cloth , the customary toasts received full justice . " The Health of the Worshipful Master " was proposed by the LP . M ., who stated in the course of his remarks that the Worshipful Master ' s efficiency in the working was due

entirely to the close application he had devoted at the lodge of instruction . He ( the speaker ) trusted that those who desired to follow in his footsteps would emulate the Worshipful Master ' s example . The Worshipful Master , in reply , briefly said that he felt it was his duty to m ister the work to the best of his ability . The brethren hitherto had been good enough to give him

work to do , and there was every probability of his having to work the whole of the ceremonies during the remainder of his year of office . "The Initiate" followed , and the toast was duly acknowledged by Bro . Court . Bros . Mojon and Green replied to the toast of "The Visitors . "

The pledge of " The Past Masters" was coupled with the name of Bro . Dennis , I . P . M . In giving "The Treasurer and Secretary , " the Worshipful Master spoke in very kind terms of these hardworking and efficient officers . Bro . G . Everett , in the course of his reply , said that on that particular evening he had exerted himself to the utmost to ensure the comfort of the brethren , and from the happy

faces he saw around him , he believed that he had succeeded . The Treasurership of a large lodge like No . 13 S 1 , required a great deal of care and thought . Bro . Stuart having said a few words , Bros . Hearn and Millsom responded to the toast of "The Officers . " During the evening Bros . Hopkins , Lundie , Davis , arid Everett entertained the brethren .

M ., who , by his skill as a caterei and his attention to the comfort of the various lodges , is creating for himself a high reputation at this well-known house . The W . M ., in proposing "The Health of H . R . H . the M . W . G . M ., " said that cordially as that toast was always received , that being the birthday of the M . W . G . M . would

ensure for it a more than usually hearty reception ; ' drinking his health they would wish him many happy rc " turns of the day .
