Craft Masonry.

Bro . Pardon , I . P . M ., rose to propose the toast of the evening He said he rose for the first time to propose this important toast— " I he Health of the VV . M . of the Gallery Lodge "—and , considering the large gatheringof members and friends they had round them , and considering that they had present all the Past Masters of the Gallery Lodge , Bro . Goldsmith commenced his year of office under the most favourable circumstances . Bro . Goldsmith was a very

energetic Mason , and had gone through the various offices in the Gallery Lodge , and had now attained , as he was told by the Installing Master , the highest honour the Craft could confer or the lodge bestow on him . He was a thoroughly good and genuine Mason , as all who knew him in Masonry as well as in press work must be thoroughly well aware . Bro . Goldsmith was a very old personal friend of his , not only in Masonry and press work , but he might almost say

independently of press work ; and that he had succeeded to the Mastership of the Gallery Lodge was a matter of gratification to him and all of his personal friends . It was gratifying to the members of the lodge to know that they would have to rule over them during the coming year a thoroughly capable Master , and he was quite sure that when that time twelve months came round , and another Master was installed , they would see a further progress in

the lodge , as they had always had the honour and the pleasure of seeing every year in that lodge—a lodge that had become an important factor in the press-world of England , and not an altogether unimportant factor in the great world itself . Bro . Pardon concluded by asking the brethren , in bumpers , to drink the health of the W . M . of the lodge , Bro . Goldsmith . In returning thanks , the VVorshipfuI Master said that it

was not without diffidence that he rose to respond to the toast—the W . M . of the Gallery Lodge—which had been proposed by the I . P . M ., Bro . Pardon , in too flattering terms . He ( Bro . Goldsmith ) had taken considerable interest in Freemasonry for a good many years . He thought that no one would deny that he still took that interest . From the time that he was initiated he was active in the work , and to walk , as far as one could in this mortal world , upon the

tenets of Freemasonry . If he had deserved what had been said , what he had done well would not be forgotten j but he thought it one of the best points a man could aim at . As they all jogged along together he found all through their Masonic brethren and friends that the Gallery Lodge did a tremendous lot to rub off the sharp corners , and make things work harmoniously . He thought Freemasonry one of the best of institutions—a matter that he might enlarge

upon when he came to speak of Charity . Without laying down any programme for the next year , he should endeavour to follow in the steps of those who had gone before him in that chair , and hoped that twelve months hence he should be show some good results from his year of office . The VVorshipfuI Master next proposed "The I . P . M ., the Installing Masters , and the other Past Masters of the Lodge" and , in replying to it ,

, Bro . Pardon said that it was a matter of great gratification to him that in the past year they had had a great success so far as new members were concerned . He said that he was very glad also that the lodge had taken the step of devoting a much larger proportion of its income than formerly to the purposes of Charity . Whatever a Master might do in supporting the chair , it came to very little unless he advanced the real reason for his occupation

of the chair—to advance the cause of Masonic Charity and benevolence . Bro . Massey , in response to a call , also said a few words in reply to this toast . The toast to "The Health of the Treasurer , Secretary , Wardens , and other Officersof the Lodge , " was responded to by Bros . Massey , Treas . ; Albery , Sec ; J . Duckworth , S . VV . ; and Dr . Griffiths , I . W .

" The Visitors' " toast was answered by Bros . Farncombe , Hall , Graham , Heckscher , and Vinell . The Worshipful Master then proposed " Success to the Masonic Charities , " in doing which he took occasion to say that he should probably , with the permission of the brethren , stand as Steward for one of the Masonic Charities during his year of office , and hoped that he should have such support from the brethren as would enable him to take

up a good list , and show a good front as representative of the Gallery Lodge . The T y ler ' s toast brought a very successful meeting to a termination . The lodge was opened in due form , and the minutes of the last regular lodge and of two subsequent emergency lodges were read and confirmed . A ballot was then taken for Mr . Frank Wright , which proved clear , and Mr . Wright being in attendance , he was initiated into Freemasonry by the VV . M ., who also gave the charge .

Bro . VV . F . Smithson , S . W ., was elected VV . M . for the ensuing year , and Bro . Fitz Herbert Wright was re-elected Treas ., & c Brcs . Masters , Carr , and Potts were appointed auditors . The sum of ten guineas was voted from the lodge benevolent fund towards the Masonic Charities . Bro . Smithson , W . M . elect , announced his intention of representing the lodge as Steward at the next Festival of

the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , at the same time presenting ten guineas , and endow the S . W . ' s chair . " Hearty good wishes " having been given by the visitors , to whom the W . M ., on behalf of the lodge , offered a very fraternal welcome , the lodge was closed in due form , and the brethren and their visitors sat down to a good substantial supper at Freemasons' Tavern . The usual Masonic toasts were duly honoured , and a most happy

evening was spent , many of the brethren contributing songs which were very greatly appreciated . During the evening VV . Bro . Fitz Herbert Wright , Treas ., announced his intention to act as a Steward , along with the W . P . M . Thereupon a motion was brought forward by Bro . B . Chennell , P . M ., that a certain sum be voted by the lodge

for the purpose of presenting Bro . T . Nichols with a Past Master ' s jewel upon his leaving the chair , in recognition of his successful year of office , his efficient conduct in the chair , and his long services to the Craft . Bro . Frank Pigott , J . D ., in seconding the motion , said he was glad the proposition had been so kindly received by the Past Masters . VVhen he suggested the matter a few days before he naturally did so with diffidence , as it might

seem an invidious distinction j but he was pleased to assure the lodge that the Past Masters did not so regard it , and gladly fell in with the idea . He hoped he was speaking the feelings of those below the chair in saying that they would readily acquiesce in this proposition . It was not merely that they wished to recognise the efficiency of Bro . Nichols as VV . M . —though that was sufficient to justify this motion—but they also desired to show their appreciation of

his long services to the Craft , which were of no ordinary kind , seeing that he had been Secretary to the Iodge for fifteen years , and besides had officiated , as Prov . Grand Secretary for four years , and Prov . Grand Treasurer for eleven years . They had , therefore , good reasons in his case for voting this jewel , and he hoped it would be unanimously adopted . Upon the vote being put , it was carried unanimously .

" Hearty good wishes " having been tendered , the lodge was closed . At the banquet , Bro . Geo . McCullam , I . P . M ., in giving " 'Ihe Health of the W . M ., " informed him of the vote passed unanimously by the Iodge during his temporary absence . Bro . Nichols made a feeling response , the vote taking him completeby by surprise . He assured the brethren that

in all he had done he had been actuated by his great love for Masonry , and he could not claim to have done more than his duty . It was most pleasing to know that his services had been so much appreciated . He had one son who held a prominent position in Masonry , and he had himself initiated another of his sons during his present year of office , so that this gift of a P . M . 's jewel would not only be highly prized b y him , but aftewards handed down to members of his family who could appreciate it .

Bro . Wood-Ingram , P . M ., in responding for " The Visitors , " complimented the W . M . and his officeis upon the very efficient discharge of their dulies . Ihe VVorshipfuI Master , in proposing "The Health of the Newly-Initiated , " spoke of the great [ pleasure it had afforded him to initiate a son of their Deputy Provincial Grand Master , and expressed the hope that in his time Bro . J . H . Moyes might become as good and successful a Mason as his much respected father .

Bro . J . R . Pattison , I . P . M ., P . G . A . S ., proposed the toast of "The Worshipful Master . " He referred to the able manner in which Bro . Singleton had fulfilled the various offices he had occupied in the Iodge . He had gained the esteem and high regard of the members , and at last had been appointed and installed to the highest office the Iodge could offer him . They all wished him a

prosperous year of office . The Worshipful Master , Bro . R . Singleton , acknowledged the hearty way in which the toast of his health had been proposed and received . They had all regretted how the death last year of their VVorshipfuI Master elect , Bro . VV . B . Ferguson , had created a void in their ranks . He should do his best to discharge the duties of the Worshipful Master , and hoped to have the support of the Past Masters

and officers of the lodge . There had been a number of gentlemen proposed at thc Iodge meeting , so they would have a deal of work no doubt . All that he could do would be done , as , he was sure , would also be done by the other officers , to maintain the prestige of the old Palatine Lodge . Bro . J . C . Moor , P . M ., P . P . J . G . D ., proposed "The

Immediate Past Master and Installing Master , Bro . J . R . Pattison , " which was very enthusiasticall y received . Alluding to the antiquity of the lodge and the distinguished brethren of the Order who had passed through the W . M . ' s chair of the Palatine , he pointed out that half-a-century ago the Prov . Grand Master of Durham , of 1842 , Sir Hedworth Williamson , was the W . M . of the lodge , and the Prov . Deputy G . M ., Sir Cuthbert Sharp , was , 52 years
