ago , the W . M . Now they bad the honour of knowing that their W . M . of 1858 , the present Str Hedworth Williamson , Bart ., and P . G . M ., had been their W . M . and was still a P . M . of the lodqe . It behoved all who came to the chair to remember those who had passed through the chair , and assisted to maintain the high character and efficiency of the work of the lodge , ln Bro . Pattison they had one who had for two years in succession most ably

filled the chair , and they were glad his abilities were such that he had recently been appointed as the Prov . Asst . G . Sec . of the province , an office for which he was in every way well qualified . The ceremony that day had also been very ably performed , and he was sure they would all join very heartily in wishing him many years of health and strength . Bro . J . R . Pattison , I . P . M ., responded , and thanked

Bro . Moor , P . M ., for the kindly manner in which he had proposed the toast of the I . P . M . and Installing Master , and also the brethren for the enthusiastic manner in which they had received it . He felt it a great compliment to think that at the conclusion of his two years' Mastership of such an old and important Lodge as No . 97 undoubtedly was , he had the warmest feelings of the brethren and their evident approval of the manner in which he had

performed the duties which had devolved upon him . His opinion was that the greatest pleasure and pride that an I . P . M . could have in looking back upon his term of office was the initiates he had during that term , not the number , that was a secondary consideration , but the quality . In referring to the names of the gentlemen ( 14 ) who had been initiated into Masonry during the last two years in the Palatine Lodge , he felt he had every reason to express his

pride and satisfaction . One brother he might be allowed to refer to particularly , viz ., Bro . Ardasir Coroasji Nusservanji Homji ; it was a unique pleasure to have had an opportunity of initiating ( probably the first time in the North of England ) a Parsee . The emergency lodge of Saturday , 23 rd May , 1885 , would be long remembered by the brethren who had gathered together from all parts of the Province of Durham . The occasion and the

gentleman were worthy of the attendance . Bro . Pattison , referring to his appointment as Assist . P . G . Sec , stated that he had already found that the office was no sinecure , but would do his best to perform the duties appertaining thereto . In conclusion he once more thanked the brethren , and expressed a hope that the unanimity and kind fraternal feeling which had characterised them all would long be continued .

• XBro . J . G . Kirtley , P . M ., P . P . J . G . D ., proposed "The Past and Present Officers , " to which Bro . C M . Wake , S . W ., and Bro . Cutler , A . S . S ., responded . The Worshipful Master proposed "The Visiting Brethren , " to which the respective W . M . ' s and Wardens of Lodges 80 , 94 , 949 , 1389 , and 2039 responded . Bro . J . H . Turnbull , P . M . 80 , P . P . G . P ., proposed "The Masonic Charities , " to which Bro . J . J . Clay , P . M . 97 , P . P . G . S . of W ., P . G . D . of C , suitably responded ,

DERBY . —Tyrian Lodge ( No . 253 ) . —At the last meeting of this lodge—held on the 23 rd ult . —after the conclusion of the regular business , theW . M ., Bro . VV . Silver Hall , rose and said : Brethren , you may remember that among the property of this Iodge was an antique sword , or Highland claymore , which not long since was in a very delapidated condition . The blade was thickly covered with rust , the basket-hilt , which was a beautiful piece of steel

work , was crushed nearly flat , either because some heavy weight had been dropped upon it , or possibly from its owner having sustained a fall from hislhorse ; nearly every trace of the silver mounting : and plating had disappeared , while of the lining of the hilt nothing but a few moth-eaten shreds remained . This has now been most carefully and successfully restored and repaired at the expense of the officers of the lodge , in whose name I now have the pleasure

of again presenting it to you . The hilt has been raised to its old form , re-plated , and re-lined ; the blade , on which appears the name of the maker ( Andrea Ferrara ) has been burnished , and a sheath provided for its protection . Ferrara , as you may be aware , was a celebrated swordsmith , Italian by birth , who settled at Saragossa , in Spain , in the early part of the sixteenth century . Specimens of his work are still preserved in the Armeria at Madrid . The magnificent

blades which were presented by Ferdinand to our King Henry VIII . on his marriage with Katharine of Arragon were supplied by Ferrara , while his weapons had a special reputation among the Highland clans . It is therefore not impossible that in this beautiful sword we have a relic of the visit to Derby of the Highlanders under Prince Charles Edward in 1745 . In our minute books , which extend in an unbroken series since September 23 rd , 1788 , there is no record that any such sword had been purchased by , or

presented to , the lodge . It is therefore probable that this beautiful weapon , which is , at least , 350 years old , has belonged to the lodge since its consecration in 1785 . _ If any brother or friend can throiv any further Unfit upon its history , we shall , I am sure , be only too pleased to hear from him . The sword , after having been passed round and greatly admired , was then formally entrusted to the custody of the Tyler . —

HARTLEPOOL . —St . Helen's Lodge ( No . The new building is constructed on the site of the old one , and , though small , is a model of convenience , and is designed by Bro . H . Mair , the borough surveyor , the
