Freemasonry In 1899.
East , in the belief that he had held it long enough ancl that it was high time he retired in favour of some other brother . Under these circumstances G . Lodge , while accepting his lordship ' s resignation , passed a vote of thanks to him for his services ancl elected as his successor Bro . Lt .-Col . John Campbell , who had
been unanimously recommended for the office by the lodges in the Province . Reports were subsequently handed in relating to the condition of Masonry in the Province of Glasgow City and the Metropolitan district , and from these it appeared that , with hardly an exception ; the whole of these two groups of lodges
were doing capital work , it being indeed a record return for the 37 lodges m Glasgow . The G . Master likewise mentioned that in response to his appeal on St . Andrew ' s Day , 18 9 8 , the lodges and other Masonic bodies in Scotland had subscribed over £ 300 to the Gordon Memorial College in Khartoum anel that a
cheque for that sum would accordingly be forwarded to Bro . Lord Kitchener . In August , further particulars relating to this subscription were furnished , and also concerning the £ 404 contributed by the lodges to the Grand Lodge Annuity Fund on St . John's Day . In November , the Office-Bearers for the ensuing 12
months were elected , Bro . Lord Saltoun being succeeded by Bro . the Hon . James Hozier , M . P ., Prov . G . Master of Lanarkshire , Upper Ward , a cordial vote of thanks being at the same time passed to his lordship for the able services he had rendered during the three years of his presidency as Grand Master . On
the same occasion the M . W . G . Master moved that a grant of 100 guineas from the funds of Grand Lodge be made for widows ancl orphans of Scottish soldiers slain in the Transvaal War ancl the motion was adopted on the understanding that in the event of further help being needed a further appeal should be
made to Grand Lodge . On St . Andrew ' s Day ( 30 th November ) the new G . Office-Bearers were installed ancl invested , ancl the brethren held High Festival in accordance with ancient custom . Among the other leading events of the year in Scottish Masonry , there must be recorded the installation , on the 31 st July , at
Perth , by Lord Saltoun , M . W . G . M ., of Bro . Lt .-Col . John Campbell , as Prov . G . Master of Perthshire East , in succession to the Marquis of Breadalbane and the presentation of a handsome jewel and illuminated address of thanks to his lordship in recognition of his eminent services during the preceding 20 years , as
the head of that Province . On the 25 th August , the Ness Lodge , No . 888 , was consecrated at Invergordon by Bro . Col . Sir Hector Munro , of Fowlis , Prov . G . Master of Inverness-shire ancl Bro . John Thomson , installed as the first R . W . M . But , after all , the great event by which the year 18 99 will always be remembered
is the Tercentenary on Wednesday , the 15 th July , of thc earliest recorded minutes of a Masonic Lodge namely , those of the Lodge of Edinburgh , No . 1 ( Mary ' s Chapel ) , of the last day . of July ( Vltimo July ) , 1 599 . The Prince of Wales , as Patron of the Grand Lodge of Scotland , was graciously pleased to bestow
his patronage upon this celebration , though his Royal Highness s arrangements did not admit of his taking part in the proceedings , but there was , nevertheless , a grand gathering of Scottish Masonic notabilities in its honour , among thc principal guests being Bros . Sir Charles Dalrymple , Bart ., M . P . ; ancl the Earl of Haddington , Past G . Masters ; the Earl of Rosslyn , Past G . W . ;

Sir Lewis Mcfver , M . P ., the Hon . H . Dalrymple Hamilton , P . G . M . Wigton and Kirkcudbright ; Major F . W . Allan , S . G . W . ; D . Murray Lyon , G . Sec , the Historian of the lodge ; D . Reid , G . Treasurer , and others to the number of upwards of 400 , who
dined together in the Music Hall , Edinburgh , to commemorate this unique event in Masonry , while a permanent memorial of it will be published shortly in the form of a Tercentenary edition of Bro . Murray Lyon ' s valuable history of this venerable lodge .
IRELAND . Thanks to the kind offices oi one of the ablest and best known members of the Irish Craft we are again , as we have been before , in a position to lay before our readers a fuller record than formerly of thc proceedings of the brethren in Ireland . It is not as ample as wc should have liked to make it , but so far as it
goes , it will serve to convey an excellent idea of what has taken place , Masonically , in that part of the United Kingdom during this year of grace , 18 99 . First as regards the proceedings in Grand Lodge , it appears that at the Quarterly Communication held in Freemasons' Hall , Dublin , on Thursday , the 2 nd March ,
thc Extension of Premises Committee submitted a report , in which they recommended that of the plans which , in response to their invitation , hael been submitted to them , for the extension , improvement , ancl re-arrangement of the premises those of Bro . J . J . Farrall should bc accepted , ancl that brother appointed as
Architect . They further recommended that the tender of Mr . John Good for £ 5695—being the lowest of the four receivedshould be accepted . The report was adopted unanimously ancl it was resolved , on the motion of Bro . Dr . Chetwode Crawley , that an additional £ 1000 should be expended for a complete
electric installation . Thus b y a singular coincidence the Grand Lodges of England ancl Ireland have been at the same time engaged in enlarging their buildings and we dare say the outlay will be incurred to good purpose . At the same meeting the Auditors ' Report for thc year 18 9 8 was presented , from which it appears
that there was a balance at the close of the account due to the Trustees of Grand Lodge of £ 1950 , ancl in addition close on £ 500 India Three per Cent . Stock ancl £ 2500 on deposit , while on the Charity Fund there was a balance of £ 53 6 to its credit . Among other events we note with deep regret the death at Cairo , on the
25 th March , of Bro . R . W . Shekleton , Q . C , who had filled the oflice of Dep . G . Master for considerably over 20 years , and not so very long previously had resigned on the ground of failing health . The news was received by the whole Irish Craft with the profoundest sorrow , nor was the opportunity missed of showing
respect to the memory of one who had rendered such distinguished services to Masonry . On the other hand , the congratulations of thc brethren were equally sincere when it was found that among the recipients of the Queen ' s birthday honours was included the present Dep . G . Master , Bro . James Creed
Meredith , LL . D ., on whom , in recognition of his eminent services to science , her Majesty was pleased to confer the distinction of knighthood .
