It proved a brilliant success , thanks to the excellence of the arrangements b y the Committee of Management and more

particularly to the personal interest taken by the Duke and Duchess in the meeting . In addition to the Prov . Grand Master and the Duchess of Portland there were present his brother , Lord Henry Cavendish-Bentinck , ALP ., Prov . G . Alaster of Cumberland and Westmorland , and Lady H . Cavendish-Bentinck ,

Captain and Mrs . Lindsay , Colonel Douglas Dawson , Bro . Captain W . H . Blackburn , P . M ., who acted a ' s M . C , Bro . A . Stubbs , Prov . G . Sec , together with brethren from all parts of the Province to the number of nearly 400 . The second event was a special meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge at Worksop

on the 3 rd August , when the Duke appointed Bro . his Honour Judge W . Masterman as his Deputy Prov . Grand Master in succession to Bro . Lieut .-Col . W . Newton , P . G . D ., deceased , and Bro . A . W . C Peskett , Prov . G . Secretary , vice Bro . A . Stubbs . After this , at the invitation of the Duke and Duchess of

Portland , thebrethren attended a garden party at Welbeck Abbey , where they and their ladies were heartily welcomed by their hosts and had the pleasure , not only of roaming about the beautiful grounds , but also of inspecting the historical objects and works of Art which have been gathered in the Abbey itself .

Another event of great interest was the laying of the foundation stone of the new hospital at Boscombe on the 28 th June , the ceremony being performed by Bro . W . W . B . Beach , M . P ., the respected Prov . Grand Master of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight , there being a very large attendance of the brethren and

of the general public , who assembled to witness the unusual spectacle . Many similar occurrences may also be recorded , among them being the laying of the chief corner-stone of the new Masonic Hall of St . Cuthbert's Lodge , Mo . 1992 , Bedlington , by Bro . Burdon , J . Kent , on the 9 th ancl 12 th June respectively ; of the memorial stone of the new Masonic Hall of the Queen Victoria Lodge , No . 2655 , St . Budeaux , Devonshire , by Bro . F . C Edyvean , W . " Another gathering of exceptional interest was that which took place at Warwick on Monday , the 30 th October , when the Provincial Grand Lodge of Warwickshire at its annual communication presented Lord Leigh with an address of congratulation and afterwards his lordship ' s portrait

in oils to Lady Leigh as memorials of their recent golden wedding . There are also two initiations that deserve to be mentioned , that of Lord Ronaldshay , eldest son of the Marquis of Zetland , Prov . G . Master of North and I ^ ast Yorkshire , which took place

in the Lennox Lodge , No . 123 , Richmond ( Yorks ) , on the 4 th August ancl that of Mr . Connop F . S . Perowne , which took place at a special meeting of the Royal Solomon Mother Lodge of Jerusalem ( No . 293 , Canadian Const ) , which was held in King Solomon ' s Quarries , in the Holy City , on the 25 th of the same

month . Among what are known as " Masonic Services "in the majority of cases in aid of the Masonic or local Charitable Institutions—we mention those at All Saint ' s Church , Southport , when Bro . Ven .-Archdeacon Sinclair , D . D ., Past G . Chaplain , preached the sermon ; and at the Kingsland

Congregational Church , under the auspices of the Clissold Lodge , No . 2661 , on the 22 nd and 29 th January , respectively ; at St . Mark ' s Church , New Barnet , on tlie 12 th February , when Bro . Ven .-Archdeacon Sinclair , was again the preacher ; at the Church of St . Lawrence , Old Jewry , under the auspices of the Gallery

Lodge , No . 1929 , on the 21 st April , with the same preacher ; and on the 30 th of the same month , at Dukinfield ; a thanksgiving service for the Queen ' s birthday , at Battle , Sussex , on the 24 th May ; and at Hornsey Parish Church , on the 25 th June . There have also been held the usual balls , concerts ,

conversaziones , and the like , while " Ladies' Nights" and " Summer Outings , " appear to be growing more popular every year . ' There , have likewise been the usual array of presentations to brethren who have rendered some special service , or otherwise distinguished themselves , among these being one to Bro . James

Kay , in recognition of his valued labours as Secretary of the Eboracum Lodge , ancl Scribe E . of its chapter , from their respective dates of constitution ; a congratulatory dinner to Bro . the Hon . Mr . Justice Bucknill , on his elevation to the judicial bench ; one to Bro . T . Woods , Prov . G . Treasurer of West

Yorkshire , and first W . M . " of the Doric Lodge , No . 26 95 , Harrogate ; to Bro . R . Clay Sudlow , P . G . Std . Bearer , in recognition of his splendid work in connection with the Emulation Lodge of Improvement ; to Bro . Sir Albert Woods ( Garter ) , P . G . W ., G . D . C , in commemoration of the jubilee of his initiation into

Freemasonry ; to Bro . Lt .-Col . Bindley , P . G . D ., Past D . P . G . M . Staffordshire ; and to Bro . Lt .-Col . Warner Otley , P . Dep . P . G . M . Worcestershire , in recognition of their services as Dep . P . G . Masters ; to Bro . James Stephens , P . D . G . D . C , for his

and annual dinner , the latter under the presidency of Bro . John Strachan , Q . C , and has made considerable progress during the year , more especiall y by the establishment of branches in the Provinces . It may further be recorded that among those Prov . G . Masters who have gone out of their way to visit lodges under

their rule will be found the Earl of Warwick , who with the Earl of Stradbroke , the S . G . Warden of the year , attended a meeting of the Thomas Railing Lodge , No . 2508 , Buckhurst Hill ; and the Earl of Lathom , who very shortly after his installation

as P . G . M . for West Lancashire , attended the installation meeting of the Liverpool Dramatic Lodge , No . 1609 . In short , without giving further particulars respecting events which for the most part are of annual occurrence , we may state generally , that " Craft Masonry" has fared most prosperousl y during the present year .

ROYAL ARCH MASONRY . It is satisfactory to know that during the present year a greater degree of interest has been exhibited in the Royal Arch , and that the apathy with which its proceedings have been attended is somewhat less pronounced . Supreme Grand
