Freemasonry In 1899.
however , to lament the loss of two members of the Supreme Council , in addition to its M . P . S . G . C , the Earl of Lathom , G . C . B ., who held that office at the time of his death in November , 18 9 8 . The Council has , therefore , undergone several changes in its personnel , the Sov . G . Commander 0
being Bro . Captain N . G . Philips , 33 —who has occupied the position once before , and was Lieut . G . Commander under the late Lord Lathom . The new Lieut . G . Commander is the Earl of Euston . The offices of G . Treasurer General , Grand Prior , Grand Chamberlain , and Grand Chancellor , are filled as in 1898 ,
but the Earl of Dartrey , P . G . M ., has been appointed Grand Captain of the Guard , vice the late Col . Starkie ; the Earl of Lathom , Grand Registrar , vice the Earl of Euston , now Lieut . G . Commander ; and Viscount Dungarvan , Grand Marshal , vice the late Col . A . B . Cook . It may also be deemed worthy of
mention that financially it is to the full as prosperous as ever ; that its list of donations has been substantially increased , each of the three Central Institutions having been voted a sum of 50 guineas , while other grants have been made , but whether inclusive of the 100 guineas to one of the war funds does not
appear . In the Order of the Temple there has been great activity , and if Knight Templary is not materially stronger in membership , it is clearly sound enough in the matter of funds , and voted 100 guineas to the Daily Telegraph War Fund ( Widows and Orphans ) , at its half yearly chapter on the Sth
instant . It has lost two prominent members in the late V . E . Knights Major-General John C . Hay , C . B ., K . O . T ., formerly Vice-Chancellor , and Raymond H . Thrupp , Past Grand Registrar , to whose decease sympathetic reference was made in the report presented by the Council at the latest meeting of Great Priory .
In addition to the half yearly chapters , at the earlier of which , on the 12 th May , the Earl of Lathom , was made a Knight Grand Cross , and General J . Corson Smith , Past G . Commander in the United States , a Knight Commander , the fourth Annual Conference of the Supreme Templar Bodies in the United
Kingdom , was held in Dublin on the 14 th April , under the presidency of V . E . Sir Charles A . Cameron , Great Seneschal oi the Order in Ireland , V . E . Gen . ] . Corson Smith , of the United States , being also present , when several matters of importance were discussed , among them being the interchange of
representatives with other Templar Bodies , which had bcen agreed to at the previous Conference . A resolution was also adopted , declaring that a certain self-styled Sovereign Great Priory in Victoria , Australia , was not legitimate , and intercourse with it was prohibited and the resolution to this effect has since bcen adopted
by Great Priory . As regards the Oreler of Rome and the Red Cross of Constantine , the Sir Knights had a grand field day at Leeds on the 27 th May , when thc Earl of Euston who had been re-elected Grand Sovereign of the Order at the Grand Imperial Conclave on the preceding 6 th March , constituted
the Loidis Conclave , with Sir Knight C . Letch Mason as the first M . P . S . About thc same time at Bradford his lordship , in Iiis capacity of Grand Master of the Allied Masonic Degrees , consecrated the Old York Council , No . 29 , of that Order , with Bro . C . L . Mason as the first VV . M ., while we are glad to announce ,
with reference to this body , that its differences with thc Order of the Secret Monitor , of whicli the Earl of Warwick is the G . S . Ruler , have been adjusted , and that henceforth peace and harmony are likely to prevail between them . Another new
Council—the Salem , No . 28—with the Hon . A . de Tatton Egerton , as W . M ., had previously been added to the roll , ancl at the annual meeting , on the Gth November , the reports were uniforml y favourable as to the progress made during the past year . The annual meeting of the Grand Council of the Royal

and Select Masters was held on the 7 th March , at which the reports were also satisfactory , so that there is no branch of Masonry which has not , on the whole , good reason to congratulate itself on the events of the year which a few clays hence will have run its course .
Among the changes that have taken place among the higher dignitaries of the Order , the most important are those of Comp . Earl Amherst to be Pro Grand Z ., vice the Earl of Lathom , deceased , and Comp . the Earl of Warwick to be Grand IL , in succession to Earl Amherst . In addition , Comp . the Earl of
Lathom has been installed G . Superintendent of West Lancashire , in succession to his late father , while Comp . Lieut .-Gen . Sir Power Palmer , has succeeded Comp . Lieut .-Gen . Sir G . B .
Wolseley , as G . Superintendent of the Punjab . There is still , however , an important vacancy to be filled , that of Superintendent of East Lancashire , in place of the lamented Comp . Col . Le Gendre N . Starkie .
OUR INSTITUTIONS . It is impossible to be otherwise than gratified with the work done by and in behalf of our Central Masonic Institutions . Last year there was raised for their support , some £ 160 , 000 , of which £ 141 , 000 was contributed to the Boys' Centenary , while the balance of £ 19 , 000 was about equally apportioned between the Girls' School and the Benevolent Institution . Such an
unprecedented total as that of 18 9 8 , might well have served as an apology for a very modest aggregate during the present year , but the Craft realised that while the Boys' School Festival would almost necessarily furnish only a small return , the other Institutions were entitled to substantial amends for the
shortcomings of their preceding anniversaries . Accordingly , great and , we rejoice to say , most successful efforts were put forth in order , as far as possible , to restore the equilibrium , and the Benevolent Festival yielded ultimately upwards of £ 20 , 000 , while the Girls ' School fared even better in May , the total of the donations and
subscriptions just slightly exceeding £ 21 , 000 . The Boys ' School Returns in June , fell somewhat short of £ 9000 , so that the year ' s aggregate may be reckoned , in round figures , at about £ 50 , 000 , which , if it is not quite on a level with the average aggregate of previous years , is still a goodly total , ancl one of which the Craft has every reason to he proud .
The Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution celebrated its Anniversary Festival at the Freemasons' Tavern , on Wednesday , the 22 nd February . Great efforts had been made to organise a numerous and efficient Board of Stewards , and when the
appointed time came round , Bro Lord Llangattock , Prov . G . Master of South Wales ( E . D . ) , who had kindly undertaken the office of Chairman , had the extreme satisfaction of learning from the mouth of Bro . James Terry , that the amount of donations and subscriptions obtained by the 483 ladies and brethren who
had assisted him as Stewards , was £ 18 , 20 7 , t ' ultimate total including outstanding lists and additions being £ 20 , 162 , of which the 26 7 London Stewards were responsible for £ 10 , 374 , and the 216 Provincial and Foreign Stewards for £ 9788 . The former included quite a large number of substantial lists , the
most considerable being the £ 425 raised by Bro . Culliford , with the assistance of 30 of the members of the City of Westminster Lodge , No . 1563 ; £ 281 8 s . from the Friends-in-Council Lodge , No . 1383 , per Bro . T . F . Marson ; £ 24 6 15 s . from the Old
Masonians Lodge , No . 2700 , per Bro . J . Morrison McLeod , the Secretary of thc Boys' School , who had raised precisely the same amount for the Girls' School Festival of the previous year , and £ 200 from the Old Westminster Lodge , No . 2233 , per Bro .
