CROYDON . —Croydon Lodge ( No . 19 S ) . —The annual installation meeting of this young and now flourishing lodge of Mark Masons was held on Friday , the nth inst ., at Harewood House , under most favourable auspices . If the retiring W . M . ( Bro . Walter J . Nicholls ) had emblazoned on his banner the strange device , " nothing succeeds like success , " he would only have proved that he was able to carry out everything he had undertaken , as

from the very commencement to the completion of the long and arduous work of the lodge no hitch of any kind occurred , and all went off most successfully . The lodge was opened to the strains of the rich toned three-manual organ , erected in the hall by Professor Rhodes , Prov . G . Org ., who presided at that instrument with his accustomed ability ; and the musical portions of the ceremonies ( which are great attractions in this Degree ) were rendered with

due effect anel solemnity . The instrument has recently been considerably improved by the addition of some extra couplers , by which the . performer is enabled to increase the effects to a great extent . The brethien present included the following : V . W . Bros . Davison , Deputy Prov . G . Mark Master Middx . ; and Surrey ; Poore , P . G . I . G . ; W . Bros . Turquand , P . M . Tenterden Lodge ; Ginningham , W . M . Tcnterden Lodge ;

Monev , Tenterden Lodge ; George Yaxley , P . M ., P . G . S . ; I . K . ' Pitt , P . M . ; W . J . Nicholls , W . M . ; Bros . R . W . Brown , S . W . ; S . N . ' Griffith , J . W . ; Byron II . Ridge , M . O . ; W . Lambert , S . O . .-. nil Treas . ; \ V . Bro . Haynes , G . Stwd ., Bros . J . Rhodes , S . D . and Org . ; 1 ) . E . Lake , J . D . ; and Harrison , as Tyler . The W . M . ( Bro . Nicholls ) resumed the chair for the last time previous to retiring to the ranks of the P . M . ' s ,

and opened the lodge in clue form . The ballot was then taken for a joining Mark Master Mason , who hailed from a Scotch Royal Arch Chapter , where it is customary to be advanced lo the Degree of M . M . M . before exaltation into the Arch , and the lodge was edified by the remarks of W . Bro . George Yaxley , P . M ., who narrated some experiences of his own while out in Ontario , and other parts of the United States , where an intending visiting R . A . companion

could not be admitted into a Royal Arch Chapter working under the Scotch Constitution , because of the want of qualification as a Mark Master Mason . . The joining brother afterwards expressed in suitable terms his thanks for the opportunity of observing ( he workingof a M . M . M . Lodge under the English Constitution . Work being the order of the day and the agenda lengthy , no time was lost in balloting for three F . C . ' s and M . M . ' s , and they being

in attendance , the ceremony of advancement was worked by Bro . Walter J . Nicholls , W . M ., in an impressive manner ; and in presenting the working tools lo the candidates , it was evident that he had carefully considered the nature of the work he had undertaken , as no point was left which was not well rendered . The lodge then proceeded to the chief business of I he evening , namely the installation of Bro . Richard W . Brown as W . M . for the ensuing year , who was introduced by Bro . Yaxley , P . M ., and having given evidence of his proficiency and ability to

govern a Mark lodge was presented to the W . M ., to receive at his hands the benefit of installation . A Board of Installed Masters was formed and there were found to be no less than eight P . M . 's present , amongst whom the W . M . elect was proud to observe some Grand as well as Provincial Grand Officers , who by their presence evinced the interest taken by them in the proceedings . Upon the withdrawal of the brethren below the

exalted rank , Bro . Brown was duly installed in the chair of A . by Bro . Nicholls , in a manner which called forth much encomium from the P . M . ' s present ; and upon the re-admission of the brethren , Bro . Nicholls proclaimed Bro . Brown as W . M ., who was then saluted in clue form . The addresses from the respective columns of the S . W . and J . W . were given , and the new W . M . invested his officers . W . Bro . George Yaxley , P . M ., then proposed a

vote of thanks to the retiring W . M ., Bro . Nicholls , and highly eulogised him for the eminent services rendered to the lodge . This was passed unanimously , and ordered to be entered on the minutes . Bro . Brown , the new W . M ., then presented to Bro . Nicholls a Past Master ' s jewel , richly chased and suitably engraved , and affixed it on the breast of the recipient , expressing , in emotional terms , the feeling the lodge experienced in making the presentation

to such a worthy M . M . M . ; to which remarks Bro . Nicholls suitably responded . After other Masonic business the lodge ' was closed , and the brethren adjourned to the Greyhound Hotel for banquet , which was served up in excellent style . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given by Bro . Brown , W . M ., in succession . Bro . Poore , responded lor " Grand Lodge . " In giving the toast of " 'ihe R . W . the Prov . G . Mark M .,

Colonel Sir Francis Burdett , it was announced that the gallant Colonel had been expected to attend in person , but he had sent a telegram slating that at the last moment he had been prevented coming . The V . W . Bro . Davison , the Dep . Prov . G . Mark M ., in responding , expressed the pleasure he had derived from witnessing the work of the lodge , and the excellent manner in which the Installing Master , Bro . Walter L Nicholls , had performed the duties

and stated he should make a special point of reporting favourably to the Prov . G . M . of the excellent workingof the lodge in general , and of strongly recommending Bro . Nicholls for some further mark of the Prov . G . M . 's favour at the forthcoming P . G . Lodge in June next . Bro . Turquand , P . M ., responded to the toast of " The Visitors , " as did also Bros . Money and Ginningham . Altogether the whole affair was an immense success , and did credit to all

concerned in it , the new W . M . shewing b y his manner m the chair that he was determined not to be outdone by any predecessor in office . We are very glad to remark in conclusion that the advice we gave in these columns two years ago about getting out of " leading strings " has been followed , and that officers of this lodge have now proved

themselves willing and able to rule it , and perform its ceremonies without having to encroach on the kindness of those who so cheerfully assisted and gave their services on former occasions , and who as honorary members of the lodge were so good as to devote so much ot their time to foster anel bring forth the talents of their younger members .

OUKKX AXXK ' BOUNTY . — 1 he Governors of flic Corporation on Wednesday distributed their surplus income for the year 1 S 60 amongst poor benefices . The number of benefices approved for augmentation was 103 , of which 74 received one grant , 15 two grants , and 14 three grantseach grant consisting of a capital sum of / . ' 200 . The contributions offered by those personally interested in the

Four newly-created benefices were without any secured income whatever ; and the benefice highcstl in annual value was only £ 200 . Legacies recently received have been found meist valuable by the
