of the Committee up to the present , which showed their lodge to be eighth on the list in the amount of their subscriptions , for which he took a little pride , both on their account and his own . The highest on the list was their sister lodge , the Pattison , No . 915 , but that he said was so usually the case that such a position was expected of her . One or two propositions were then made for initiates , and the lodge was closed .
The brethren then sat down to one of Bro . Moulder ' s elegantly served suppers in an adjoining room , and on re-assembling round the social board in the lodge room , drank the usual loyal and Masonic toasts , both Grand and Provincial , with the customary honours . Bro . Weston , in proposing the toast of "The W . M ., " said they were all aware under what circumstances Bro . Shaw was presiding over them . Their esteemed W . M . was now on his wav to
Natal , having been called to active service by his Queen and country . Bro . Shaw had been suddenl y callecTupon to resume the position he had filled so worthily and well during his year of office . They were proud of him , for seeing that it was getting on for twelve months since he had carried out the duties of the office , his efforts that night were worthy of all the praise they could give him . The absence ol their W . M ., Bio . Deeves , was a great loss to
the lodge . His splendid knowledge of Masonry was well known to them all , and while they missed him they sympathised with him , leaving at home all he loved , and going to face a distant and daring foe , but such was a soldier ' s duty , and not a man in that room but would be proud to go on the same duty to-morrow , should he be called upon . However , they had their good Bro . Shaw at the head of their affairs , and he asked them to drink his
health with enthusiasm . Bro . Shaw , in returning thanks , said he certainly was not in the form that night he would have liked to have been . He had only the day previous been to the death bed of a dear old friend , and had also a son at home whose end might come any minute , so that he claimed their indulgence if hB had not quite satisfied them , but now he knew that he should have to take that chair till the end of the year , he would promise tc
do better another time . The toast of " The Past Masters " was responded to by Bro . Picken , who spoke of the several Past Masters' who were away on duty—Bro . Pownall at Eastbourne , Spinks at Natal , and Croisdale at Aldershotand said those who remained must and would make up , in the true spirit of Masonry , for the absence of those who were away on duty . " The Initiate " was then honoured , and returned thanks briefly , but to the point . The toast
of " The Visitors " was replied to by Bros . Gourley , Ellis , Ducker , and Aylward . Bro . Gourley said he was exceedingly pleased to be with them that night , more particularly at meeting so many old brother Masons , who he had years ago met in so many different places , anel under such different circumstances . But there was one thing to be said , and that was , that he was not at all surpri sed to see such excellent working as he had seen that r , ! ght , for he had
been told in Edinburgh what he had to expect at Woolwich . His esteemed friend and Brother Picken was an oldcomrade , and Bro . Farr and he had seen and worked with him in Masonry many thousands of miles from here , at the Inhabitants Lodge at Gibraltar . He , Bro . Gourley , was a Scotch Mason , and he must own that Scotch Masonry had been very backward in things Masonic . This had troubled him often , for he distinctly remembered that when
he was made a Mason , many years ago , in Edinburgh , he took the Three Degrees in one ni ght , and all of them in less than three-quarters of an hour . It was a fact , but fortunately that dark period of Scotch Masonry had passed away , and a better and brighter day had dawned for it . Since then he had determined to try and see if something could not be done to raise Scotch Masonry , and he was happy to say that his efforts had been admirably seconded
by many excellent brethren , and now , with its noble and worthy Grand Master , Sir Michael R . Shaw-Stewart , at its head , assisted as he was by the R . W . the Deputy Grand Master and the Earl of Mar and Kellie , and the Grand officers generally , Scotch Masonry was taking its place among the Craft of English Masons as a brother in charity , harmony , and fraternal love . He could assure them that at his next communication to the Grand Lodge of
Scotland he should mention with pleasure the excellent reception he had met with at the United Military Lodge at Plumstead , and also its admirable working and true spirit of Masonry . He again thanked the brethren for their cordial hospitality , and resumed his seat amid applause . The toast of "The Officers" followed , and Bros . Wilding and Holleyman responded . Bro . J olly responded to an enthusiastic reception of the Freemason , and the Tyler ' s toast closed the proceedings .
SWANSEA . —Caradoc Lodge ( No . 1573 ) . —The annualj installation of the Worshipful Master and officers of the above lodgeJook place on Monday , the 7 th inst ., at the Masonic Hall , Lacr-street , and was attended by a large number of Provincial Grand Officers and distinguished Masons from the ICastern and Western Division of South Wales , to the number of about ninety . It was one of the most brilliant and successful gatherings which has taken
place in this province for some time . The brethren assembled in the lodge room at half-past three ; the lodge was then opened in due form by the W . M ., Bro . W . Dobbs , P . G . S . W . The W . M . elect , Bro . D . C . Jones , was conducted to the pedestal by the Worshipful the Dep . Prov . Granel Master ( Bro . M . Tennant ) . The ceremony of installation was then proceeded with , Bro . W . Dobbs acting as Installing Master . Bro . Jones , having given his assent
to the ancient charges prescribed by the Constitution , was obligated , and a Board of Installed Masters having been formed ( who numbered no fewer than thirty-three ) , he was installed in due form into the chair of his lodge , the whole ceremony having been performed in an exceedingly able manner by Bro . Dobbs . The Worshipful Master appointed and invested his officers for the ensuing year as follows : Bros . Wm . Dobbs , I . P . M . ; Dr . Thomas Walters , S . W . ; I . L . Penicc , J . W . ; J . R . Davis , Treas . ; G . W . Clare ,

Bullerwill , l yler . A most interesting feature in the afternoon proceeefings was the presentation of a Past Master's gold jewel , bearing a suitable inscription , to the retiring W . M . The W . M . in presenting this token of esteem from the members of the Caradoc Lodge , paid a high tribute to Bro . Dobbs for the ability , courtesy , and zeal displayed b y him while presiding over the lodge during the past year . Ihe W . M . moved that a cordial vote of thanks be given to

M . upon the satisfactory position the lodge - had attained under his skilful guidance , and
drew the attention of the brethren to the fact that the lodge had during the past year paiel off the heavy debt which had hung over it since its foundation , and in addition had still a good balance in hand , besides the valuable furniture and jewels . The proposition was seconded by Bro . Batty , P . M ., and supported by several brethren , each of whom eulogised the services of the W . M . during his
year of office . Other routine business was transacted , after which Bro . Henry Marshall , W . M . elect , was presented to the W . M ., who with the assistance of Bros . A ., having already been approved of , was initiated into the mysteries and privileges of the Craft , and then Bro .
Osborne was raised to the Degree of M . M ., both ceremonies being ably performed by the W . M ., who , although a little rusty , did his duty admirabl y , considering the length of time since he was in full working order . Bro . Weston then drew the attention of the brethren to the fact that the testimonial fund to Lord Holmesdale , their P . G . M ., would be closed at the end of the month . He also read the report

of the Committee up to the present , which showed their lodge to be eighth on the list in the amount of their subscriptions , for which he took a little pride , both on their account and his own .
M ., Bro . W . Dobbs , P . G . S . W . The W . Dobbs . The Worshipful Master appointed and invested his officers for the ensuing year as follows : Bros . Wm . Dobbs , I . P . M . ; Dr . Thomas Walters , S . W . ; I . L . Penicc , J . W . ; J . M . in presenting this token of esteem from the members of the Caradoc Lodge , paid a high tribute to Bro . Dobbs for the ability , courtesy , and zeal displayed b y him while presiding over the lodge during the past year . Ihe W . M . moved that a cordial vote of thanks be given to
