The lodge vvas then closed , and

The loyal and Masonic toasts having been honoured , the next business was the presentation to Bro . Dr . Kellett Smith of an enlarged portrait of himself , executed by the well-known artists , Messrs . Brown , Barnes , and Bell , and
also a Vice-Presidency of the West Lancashire Masonic Educational Institution . The W . M ., Bro . James White , in proposing "The Health of Bro . Dr . Kellett Smith , " alluded to his long connection with the Mariners Lodge , he having been initiated nearly a quarter of a century ago , and installed W . M . in 1 S 70 . He had filled the office of Treasurer for 12
years , vvhich position he resigned in 1 SS 4 . The brethren had since under consideration to present him vvith some token of esteem for his valuable services in connection with the lodge . Bro . Dr . Smith had always given them excellent advice and assistance , and had thus contributed in no small degree to place the lodge in its high position as one of the best in the province . It was at first proposed
to present him with a portrait of himself , but when the idea of a testimonial vvas mooted , the subscriptions came in so fast that it was determined to present him also with a Vice-Presidency in the West Lancashire Masonic Educational Institution , in which he had always taken a deep interest . He ( Bro . White ) had now the honour and privilege on behalf of the subscribers of handing over these
gifts to Bro . Smith , and he vvould add in conclusion that as a leading Mason , and highly respected citizen , they one and all wished him long life , health , happiness , and prosperity , and when the Great Architect above thought fit to call him from his earthly course , that he might become a corner stone in that mansion , not made with hands , eternal in the heavens .
Bro . Dr . Smith , vvho vvas received vvith cheers , in acknowledging the testimonial , said that although during the twenty-three or twenty-four years that he vvas connected with the lodge , he had addressed them hundreds of times , yet he never felt it so difficult to speak as on that occasion . He gave a resume of his experience in connection with the lodge , and said that its purse had always been open to the
claims of Charity . He mentioned its assistance in erecting the temple , the present building , he having paid on one occasion £ 450 as their contribution to the fund for that objectj and although they had spentabout £ 100 in celebrating the centenary about three years ago , yet the lodge vvas in a flourishing condition . In resigning the office of Treasurer three years ago , he had no other motive than to
allow a chance for some oilier member to hold the office , for there were many well qualified to fill the offices in the lodge . He thanked them one and all most sincerely for their expression of regard , and he would always be ready to do anything he could for the Mariners Lodge . The proceedings vvere diversified vvith music , Bro . Ewart presiding at the piano .
