At the conclusion of the business the lodge was closed in due form , and the Master and brethren adjourned to the drawing room , where the ladies and other guests vvere

awaiting them , and after a short interval , on dinner being announced , the company proceeded to the Dome Room where between eighty and a hundred sat down to one of the choicest and best served dinners ever provided . Masons are in the habit of pluming themselves on being "just to the fair , " but on this occasion the Master and

brethren of the Lodge La Tolerance vvete also generous to a degrtc . The tables vvere beautifully decorated vvith flowers , without making them a flower show . Everything vvas in proportion , and everything vvas of the best . Even the stationery , from the dainty card of invitation , and the menu and toast list , to the beautiful dance programme ,

vvere choice and elegant . Where so much careful thought , pains , and liberality have been shown it would be churlish to pass the result over in silence . And it may be added that , judging from appearances , the ladies , for whom this skill in management had been called forth , appreciated the attention shown them , for there vvere a large number

present , in costumes rich and elegant . Bro . Burt , the W . M ., made an excellent and genial host , and he vvas admirably seconded by his officers and the other brethren of the lodge . At the conclusion of the dinner , the ladies vvere allowed to see how Masons pass their post-prandial hours ; the

usual list of toasts being proposed with the addition of "The Ladies , " which vvas made the toast of the evening . The first three well-known toasts , on vvhich nothing new can be said , may be passed over in silence , merely mentioning that Bro . Keutch , P . M ., P . G . P ., returned thanks for " The Grand Officers . "

In proposing "The Health of the Ladies , " the W . M . said he must claim special attention lor the toast , because on that occasion it vvas the toast of the evening . He need not tell them that that toast vvas the Ladies . The brethren knew that , according to Masonic rule , there vvas no female 1 ' reemasonry , but there vvas no reason on that account why

'he ladies should not join them after their Masonic work was over ; and in the name of Lodge La Tolerance he begged to welcome all the ladies who had done them the honour to come , and he hoped that they vvould carry away with them the impression of a pleasant evening . The presence of ladies added greatly to the attractive appearance - — - ——« N . u uuu *> u i \ -titij tu nils ubi . iavi . iiv . ** r K * - *** *»¦»**** 01

The lodge vvas then closed , and

the brethren adjourned to the large banqueting hall , where a substantial supper was served in good style by Bro . Casey , the House Steward , and duly appreciated . The loyal and Masonic toasts having been honoured , the next business was the presentation to Bro . Dr . Kellett Smith of an enlarged portrait of himself , executed by the well-known artists , Messrs . Brown , Barnes , and Bell , and

also a Vice-Presidency of the West Lancashire Masonic Educational Institution . The W . M ., Bro . James White , in proposing "The Health of Bro . Dr . Kellett Smith , " alluded to his long connection with the Mariners Lodge , he having been initiated nearly a quarter of a century ago , and installed W . M . in 1 S 70 . He had filled the office of Treasurer for 12

years , vvhich position he resigned in 1 SS 4 . The brethren had since under consideration to present him vvith some token of esteem for his valuable services in connection with the lodge . Bro . Dr . Smith had always given them excellent advice and assistance , and had thus contributed in no small degree to place the lodge in its high position as one of the best in the province . It was at first proposed

to present him with a portrait of himself , but when the idea of a testimonial vvas mooted , the subscriptions came in so fast that it was determined to present him also with a Vice-Presidency in the West Lancashire Masonic Educational Institution , in which he had always taken a deep interest . He ( Bro . White ) had now the honour and privilege on behalf of the subscribers of handing over these

gifts to Bro . Smith , and he vvould add in conclusion that as a leading Mason , and highly respected citizen , they one and all wished him long life , health , happiness , and prosperity , and when the Great Architect above thought fit to call him from his earthly course , that he might become a corner stone in that mansion , not made with hands , eternal in the heavens .

Bro . Dr . Smith , vvho vvas received vvith cheers , in acknowledging the testimonial , said that although during the twenty-three or twenty-four years that he vvas connected with the lodge , he had addressed them hundreds of times , yet he never felt it so difficult to speak as on that occasion . He gave a resume of his experience in connection with the lodge , and said that its purse had always been open to the

claims of Charity . He mentioned its assistance in erecting the temple , the present building , he having paid on one occasion £ 450 as their contribution to the fund for that objectj and although they had spentabout £ 100 in celebrating the centenary about three years ago , yet the lodge vvas in a flourishing condition . In resigning the office of Treasurer three years ago , he had no other motive than to

allow a chance for some oilier member to hold the office , for there were many well qualified to fill the offices in the lodge . He thanked them one and all most sincerely for their expression of regard , and he would always be ready to do anything he could for the Mariners Lodge . The proceedings vvere diversified vvith music , Bro . Ewart presiding at the piano .
