The Treasurer announced that , in compliance with a resolution passed at a former meeting , an illuminated letter of condolence had been forwarded to H . R . H . thc Prince of Wales upon the lamented death of his beloved son , the Duke of Clarence
and Avondale . and a reply to the same had been received . This was read to the lodge . It was ordered that the letter of condolence and the reply be entered on the minutes . At the banquet which followed , the W . M ., in proposing thc toast of '' The Installing Master , " referred to the admirable way in which the ceremony had been performed . Bro . W . II . Bale , in responding , took occasion to observe
upon the great improvement which had taken place in the lodge . Some five years ago a small band of worthy Past Masters made up their minds that they would either make or break the lodge , and he thought everyone would agree that they had made it . He congratulated the Master upon the splendid set of officers he had to support him in his year of office , everyone being simply perfect in the ritual , which
was due in no small degree to the able instruction of the l ' receptor of the lodge of instruction . Bro . E . W . Nightingale , l . P . M ., was then presented with a Fast Master ' s jewel , and , in returning thanks , said he felt very proud at having such a jewel affixed to his breast . Speaking of the recent Festival of the Benevolent Institution , he said he was glad to be able to state that the sum
announced on the night had since been largely increased , the grand total now amounting to £ 63 , 000 . For the first time in the annals of that lodge two Stewards had been sent up to one Festival , and upon each list appeared the sum oi 60 guineas , The lodge had placed 25 guineas upon each list , thus giving the lodge 230 votes . Considering they were not a rich lodge , he thought they had done remarkably well .
in fact there were not many lodges that had the same number of votes . It had always been the custom to place 25 suineason the Stewards' list , but when he was appointed W . M . 12 months ago he expressed his determination to have lliat amount doubled , and he was happy to say he had succeeded in doing it . The other toasts followed , and the brethren separated after spending a delightful evening .

M ., was elected Treasurer , and Bro . Harrison , Tyler . A je . vel was unanimously voted to the W . M . for so excellently carrying out his duties for the past year . The lodge being closed , the brethren adjourned to an excellent supper , which was highly appreciated , after which the W . M . gave the toasts of " The Oueen and the Craft , "
"H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M ., " and " The Pro G . M ., the Deputy G . M ., and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past . " The next toast was that of "The W . M . elect , " which the W . M . gave in congratulatory terms , wishing Bro . Thomas health and strength to carry out his important duties . B o . Thomas , in reply , thanked th ; brethren nost heartily , and trusted he might prove himself worthy of the position . He knew he might rely upon every assistance from the officers and Past Masters .
Bro . Joyce , P . M ., in giving the toast of "The W . M ., " remarked that the work had never been excelled in the lodge , and that if the officers coming on would emulate the W . M ., the lodge must go on and prosper . The Worshipful Master , in reply , thanked the brethren for such kind expressions , hut he had only done his duty . His officers had served him faithfully and well . As long as he lived he should always take the deepest interest in the lodge .
The toast of " The Visitors followed in very welcome terms , and was ably responded to by Bros . Arnott , Stevens , P . M ., Rice , and Capt . Caverley . That of " The Past Masters " was next given in high mead of praise , the W . M . remarking they all had the welfare of the lodge at heart . Bro . Terry replied , and said that for 15 years hc had responded to that toast and was proud to do so , and highly
complimented the W . M . on his exceptional wjrking . Bro . Peters , P . M . and Sec , also replied , and commented specially upon thc great advancimant the lodge had made , at the same time commanding the younger brethren and officers to emulate their W . M . _ He saw a bright future before them in the younger officers , and specially complimented the lodge upon its benevolence . The toast of " The Officers" was given by the W . M . in words of great gratification and praise , remarking that all
had done their duty ably and well . Not one had been absent from his duty once . His Wardens were veterans , but the younger officers had made splendid progress . The Officers responded in order , thaiking the W . M . for his kind expressions , and promised all the assistance that the lodge required from them to th ; ulmost ol their ability . Thomas said lie could not find words to express the gratification he felt on being received into the lodge ; however Jonjr life might last he should never forget the ceremony he had gone tluough , and should strive to show the sincerity of his promises .

The toast of " Thc Past Masters " was responded to bv Bro . S . Napper , P . M . J The W . M ., in proposing " The Health of the Visitors , " said that Bro . Hale was a respected friend , whom he was very proud to see there that evening . Bro . Moore was well known to most of them as an enthusiastic working Mason . He gave all the visitors a cordial welcome .
Bro . Matthew Hale , P . M . 27 , said that , as a resident in Islington , he thought he knew all the Masons in Islington , and had met most of them in that house in his capacity of Secretary to a lodge of instruction . He read a copy of a curious paper which he had come across in the British Museum , dated 1 SoS , giving an account of a large gathering of Freemasons , with bands , banners , and regaliato the
, number of some 1200 , when they proceed-. d to a service at the parish church , 500 of them afterwards dining together at thc Highbury Tavern . This parade was repeated two years later . Bro . E . H . Moore , J . . 2278 , also replied . He said he was not surprised at the vitality of M isonry in Islington when
he saw with what spirit their meetings were carried out . For his own pait , he was under a great obligation to the Islington Lodge of Instruction , as in it he had " learned what he knew of the ritual of Freemasonry . Tew alsj expressed the pleasure it had given him to learn of the liberality of the lodges in his province in having so generously voted the sum of 1200 guineas for the purchase of ' * 1 he Thomas Willia n Tew Presentation " to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution . It was resolved that

M . and Bro Lardner , Secretary and acting Treasurer , " in words of great praise , and thanks for their past services and continued support . Bro . Lardner replied in fitting terms , remarking his was a labour of love although an onerous duty , but he was
amply repaid so long as he had the confidence of the brethren . He was happy to stite that their Treasurer was on the road to recovery , hut s ! TO , and he trusted they mi ght see him back very si . explaining thc tracing board . 'The election of W . M . for the ensuing year then took place , which proved unanimous in favour of Bro . Thomas , S . W . Bro . Grellett , P . M ., was elected Treasurer , and Bro . Harrison , Tyler . A je . vel was unanimously voted to the W . M . for so excellently carrying out his duties for the past year . The lodge being closed , the brethren adjourned to an excellent supper , which was highly appreciated , after which the W . M . gave the toasts of " The Oueen and the Craft , "
"H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M ., " and " The Pro G . M ., the Deputy G . M ., and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past . " The next toast was that of "The W . M . elect , " which the W . M . gave in congratulatory terms , wishing Bro . Thomas health and strength to carry out his important duties . B o . Thomas , in reply , thanked th ; brethren nost heartily , and trusted he might prove himself worthy of the position . He knew he might rely upon every assistance from the officers and Past Masters .
Bro . Joyce , P . M ., in giving the toast of "The W . M ., " remarked that the work had never been excelled in the lodge , and that if the officers coming on would emulate the W . M ., the lodge must go on and prosper . The Worshipful Master , in reply , thanked the brethren for such kind expressions , hut he had only done his duty . His officers had served him faithfully and well . As long as he lived he should always take the deepest interest in the lodge .
The toast of " The Visitors followed in very welcome terms , and was ably responded to by Bros . Arnott , Stevens , P . M ., Rice , and Capt . Caverley . That of " The Past Masters " was next given in high mead of praise , the W . M . remarking they all had the welfare of the lodge at heart . Bro . Terry replied , and said that for 15 years hc had responded to that toast and was proud to do so , and highly
complimented the W . M . on his exceptional wjrking . Bro . Peters , P . M . and Sec , also replied , and commented specially upon thc great advancimant the lodge had made , at the same time commanding the younger brethren and officers to emulate their W . M . _ He saw a bright future before them in the younger officers , and specially complimented the lodge upon its benevolence . The toast of " The Officers" was given by the W . M . in words of great gratification and praise , remarking that all
had done their duty ably and well . Not one had been absent from his duty once . His Wardens were veterans , but the younger officers had made splendid progress . The Officers responded in order , thaiking the W . M . for his kind expressions , and promised all the assistance that the lodge required from them to th ; ulmost ol their ability . Ihe brethren atterwards dined under the presidency of the W . M ., and the usual toasts were g iven and honoured . In replying to the toast of ' * The Initiate , " Bro . Thomas said lie could not find words to express the gratification he felt on being received into the lodge ; however Jonjr life might last he should never forget the ceremony he had gone tluough , and should strive to show the sincerity of his promises .
Craft Masonry.
The toast of " Thc Past Masters " was responded to bv Bro . S . Napper , P . M . J The W . M ., in proposing " The Health of the Visitors , " said that Bro . Hale was a respected friend , whom he was very proud to see there that evening . Bro . Moore was well known to most of them as an enthusiastic working Mason . He gave all the visitors a cordial welcome .
Bro . Matthew Hale , P . M . 27 , said that , as a resident in Islington , he thought he knew all the Masons in Islington , and had met most of them in that house in his capacity of Secretary to a lodge of instruction . He read a copy of a curious paper which he had come across in the British Museum , dated 1 SoS , giving an account of a large gathering of Freemasons , with bands , banners , and regaliato the
, number of some 1200 , when they proceed-. d to a service at the parish church , 500 of them afterwards dining together at thc Highbury Tavern . This parade was repeated two years later . Bro . E . H . Moore , J . . 2278 , also replied . He said he was not surprised at the vitality of M isonry in Islington when
he saw with what spirit their meetings were carried out . For his own pait , he was under a great obligation to the Islington Lodge of Instruction , as in it he had " learned what he knew of the ritual of Freemasonry . The evening was enlivened by some high class songs from Bros . Stevenson , Moore , Bury , and others .

Tew alsj expressed the pleasure it had given him to learn of the liberality of the lodges in his province in having so generously voted the sum of 1200 guineas for the purchase of ' * 1 he Thomas Willia n Tew Presentation " to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution . It was resolved that
the letter be entered on the minutes of the lodge . A proposition for altering the date of meeting from the second to the first Thursday in the month was d .-lerred for consideration to the next meeting . Bro . Niven , S .
