Bro . Lord and Lady Wantage arrived at Windsor Castle on Tuesday evening on a visit to her Majesty , and had the honour of being included in the Royal dinner party . Her Royal Highness the Princess Louise , Marchioness of Lome , has kindly consented to distribute the prizes at the Highland games , which will be held at

Stamford Bridge on Monday next . Bros , the Marquis of Hartington , Lord Stalbridge , and Col . Hozier were among the guests at the political dinner party given by the Duke of Bedford at his residence in Eaton-square on Tuesday . Bro . Sir John Commereli , V . C ., has been appointed Admiral Superintendent of Portsmouth

Dockyard , and in consequence has resigned his seat as member for Southampton in the House of Commons . The Duke of Cambridge presided at the festival dinner , held at the Hotel Metropole , on Tuesday , in aid of the funds of the Middlesex Hospital . The subscriptions

announced in the coutse of the evening amounted to £ 3000 . There was a large attendance at the Crystal Palace on Saturday last on the occasion of the Grand Summer Flower Show . Some of the exhibits were very fine , the orchids in particular receiving many well-merited encomiums .

The Prince of Wales , as commodore , presided at the annual meeting of the members of the Royal Yacht Squadron , which was held at Willis's Rooms , on Saturday last , for the purpose of receiving the annual accounts and report and for the election of new members .

Bros . Lord Halsbury ( Lord Chancellor ) , Lord Ashbourne ( Lord Chancellor of Ireland ) , Lord George Hamilton , and Sir M . E . Hicks-Beach , Bart ., attended the meeting of the Cabinet at the Foreign Office on Saturday last .

GRAND LODGE OF SCOTLAND . —The Grand Master , Bro . Sir Archibald C . Campbell of Blythswood , Bart ., M . P ., will make a grand visitation to the Province of Aberdeen on the 29 th inst ., accompanied by a deputation of officers and members of the Grand Lodge . We are informed that the date of the holding of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Devonshire ( previously

announced to take place on the 6 th prox . ) has been postponed for one week , and will therefore be held on the 13 th at the Ilfracombe Hotel , at three p . m . The Alexandra Palace at Muswell Hill was re-opened to the public on Saturday last , a grand concert , in which Bro . Sims Reeves , Madame Antoinette Sterling , and other popular vocalists took part , furnishing the principal attraction of the day . The attendance was very

large . We regret to find that the serious illness of Bro . Admiral Sir W . Hewett , V . C ., K . C . B ., has terminated fatally . The deceased had seen considerable service in Burmah , the Crimea , China , on the West Coast of Africa , and in the Red Sea , and had received the Victoria Cross for two acts of valour performed during the seige of Sebastopol .

The whispers I have latel y heard concerning the Secret Monitor have , I find , no connection with some new and terrible instrument of naval warfare . Tney refer to a fresh and convivial form of Masonic association , which hails from America , and is presided over by Dr . Issachar Zacharie . The Lord Chancellor holds high office as a Secret Monitor , and the members of the Order have

recently presented the hospitable Grand Master with a service of plate . —The World . The Marchioness of Salisbury , accompanied b y her son , Lord Cranborne , M . P ., visited the Mansion House onTuesday for the purpose of unveiling a statue of the Prime Minister which has been recently executed by the sculptor , Mr . Bruce Joy , for the Corporation of the City

of London . The ceremony took place in the Egyptian Hall , in the presence of a considerable gathering of ladies and gentlemen , to whom the Marchioness was introduced by Bro . the Lord Mayor . The statue having been unveiled , a vote of thanks , on the motion ot Bro . Alderman Sir R . N . Fowler , Bart ., M . P ., seconded by Bro . Sheiiff Davies , was passed by acclamation to her ladyship , and a

similar compliment to Bio . Lord Mayor De Keyser . At the last monthly meeting of the Scientific Lodge , No . SS , Cambridge , before the summer recess , on Monday evening last , Bro . Oliver Papworth , W . M , said he was glad to state that the R . W . Prov . G . M ., Lord Hardwicke , had consented to act as a Steward of the Girls' Institu'ion at the forthcoming Festival on the 7 th

June next . The D . P . G . M ., Bro . A . H . Moyes , would also represent the province ; Lodge No . 8 S would be represented by the VV . M . ; Lodge No . 441 by Bro . Joshua Taylor , P . M . ; the Isaac Newton ( University ) Lodge by Bro . E . Armitage , W . M . j and the Alma Mater Lodge by Bro . J . R . Green , S . W . So that the Province of Cambridgeshire would be well represented on that auspicious occasion .

WHITSUNTIDE HoLiDAYS .--The Great Western , like the other railway companies , has made the usual provision for tourists and excursionists during the Whitsuntide Holidays . Every facility is offered to the public in the shape of a more frequent train service and reduced fares , and those who may be desirous of extending their holiday over a week or 10 days , equally with those who will be

absent from business for a day or two only , will find the Great Western arrangements for Whitsuntide as neaily perfect as they can be . Special facilities in the way of reduced charges are offered to visitors to the many wellknown pleasure . ' resorts in the Valley of the Upper Thames

and visitors to the West of England have been as generously considered . However , for fuller particulars we must refer the reader to the courteous General Manager at the Paddington Terminus , or to the vaiious stations on the Metropolitan and District lines of railway . Bro . the Hon . D . Plunket , Q . C ., M . P ., presided at the 73 rd Anniversary Festival held at the Hotel Metropole on Wednesday evening , on behalf of the Artists' General

Benevolent Institution . The subscriptions and donations amounted to £ 2853 . A grand concert , under the patronage of the Princess Christian and the Duchess of Teck , will take place this ( Friday ) afternoon at 3 p . m . in St . George ' s Hall , Langham-place , in aid of the fund which is being raised for Distressed Irish Ladies .

Bro . the Marquis of Hertford presided at the House Dinner of the Constitutional Club on Wednesday , Bros . Lord Henry Thynne , Lord Balfour of Burleigh , and A . Akers-Douglas , M . P ., being among the company present . The Chancellor of the Exchequer was the guest of the evening .

Bro . the Lord Mayor entertained at a grand banquet at the Mansion House , on Wednesday , the Belgian Burgomasters , who came over on a visit to this country in the early part of the week . The Lord Mayor of York , and Mayors of many English towns were present , and the proceedings passed of amid great enthusiasm .

Bro . Sir Algernon Borthwick , M . P ., introduced a deputation from the London Chamber of Commerce , and from representatives of the printing and publishing trades of the United Kingdom , to Bro . Sir M . E . Hicks-Beach , Bart ., M . P ., at the offices of the Board of Trade , on Wednesday , on the subject of the American Copyright Bill .

The Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday , which it had been originally the Queen's intention to hold in person , was held on her Majesty ' s behalf by the Princess of Wales , who was accompanied by the Prince of Wales and other members of the Royal Family , and attended by the Great Officers of State and members of the

Queen s Household . We are happy to say that a conclave of the Order of the Secret Monitor , under the auspices of the Supreme Ruler , Dr . Zacharie , and Bro . Theo . H . Tilton , in connection with the Anglo-American Lodge , will shortly be formed , money in three-fold having been immediately subscribed for the expenses of the charter and regalia .

Bro . Lord Brassey presided , and Bro . Richard Eve , Past G . Treasurer , was one of the chief guests at the anniversary festival held at the Hotel Metropole on Monday evening in aid of the Blind Pension Society . The subscriptions and donations amounted to over £ 1214 , and in addition £ 470 was sent in the course of the evening by Mrs . Templeton Wood to found two pensions .

Bro . Sir E . Monson , H . M . ' s Minister to the King of Denmark , presented his letters of recall to his Majesty the King on Thursday , the ioth instant , and afterwards had the honour of dining with the Royal family . Bro . Sir E . Monson will leave Copenhagen for Athens in the couise of a few days in order to take up his position of minister at the latter capital .

By command of the Queen the Prince of Wales held a Levee at St . James ' s Palace on Friday , the uth instant , being received on his arrival at 2 p . m . from Marlboroilgh House by the Great Officers of State and the Royal Household . The Duke of Cambridge , Duke Paul of Mecklenburg-Schwerin , and the Duke of Teck were present , and the diplomatic and general circles were well attended .

A review of the Household Cavalry regiments quartered in London , with a battery of Royal Horse Artillery and the 19 th Hussars , was held on Wimbledon Common on Tuesday , in the presence of the Prince and Princess of Wales and their daughters , the Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin , and Prince George of Greece . The force on the ground was about 1000 stronsf , and after

a couple of hours spent in manoeuvring the troops marched past and the Royal party left the Common . The concluding meeting- of the International Conference on the Sugar Bounties' System was held at the Foreign Office , on Saturday last , under the presidency of Bro . Baron Henry de Worms , M . P . The final protocol of

the convention was signed , and when the draft treaty has been submitted to the various powers and her Majesty ' s Government has been placed in possession of the views of the latter , the delegates will be invited to meet in London by the nth August next at the latest in order to sign the treaty .

Bro . the Lord Mayor presided at a meeting of the Livery cf the City of London in the Guildhall on Wednesday , for the purpose of protesting against that part of the Local Government Bid , which contemplates depriving the Livery of the right of electing the Sheriffs

of London and Middlesex , a right which had been vested in them for 800 years . The resolution to give effect to the purpose of the meeting was moved by Alderman Cotton , and seconded by Bro . Sir John Bennett , and adopted unanimously , the proceedings terminating with a vote of thanks to the chairman .

The Anglo-Danish Exhibition at South Kensington , in aid of the fund for rebuilding the British Home for Incurables , of which the Princess of Wales became Patroness a few months after her marriage , was opened bv her Royal Highness , who was accompanied by the Prince of

Wales and their daughters and Prince George of Greece , on Monday . The Royal Albert Hall was the scene of the ceremony , and the assemblage of people to witness it was very numerous . In the evening the Duke of Cambridge presided at the festival dinner of the Institution in the evening , and the subscriptions amounted to £ 5000 .

Royal Cambridge Asylum for Soldiers' Widows , was held at the Royal United Service Institution , on Saturday last under the presidency of the Secretary of State for War ' The Report , which , unfortunately , showed a falling off in the annual subscriptions caused chiefly by deaths , was adopted .

The Princess Maud of Wales , the youngest of the three daughters of the Prince and Piincess of Wales attended the Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace or Wednesday , this being the first occasion on which her Royal Highness has attended a State ceremonial of this kind .

The Duchess of Albany distributed the prizes to the Volunteer Medical Staff Corps at the Guildhall on Saturday afternoon last , the chair being occupied by Bro , the Lord Mayor , while among those present were Bros , the Sheriffs Major Davis and Higgs , Bro . The Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday , which it had been originally the Queen's intention to hold in person , was held on her Majesty ' s behalf by the Princess of Wales , who was accompanied by the Prince of Wales and other members of the Royal Family , and attended by the Great Officers of State and members of the

Queen s Household . We are happy to say that a conclave of the Order of the Secret Monitor , under the auspices of the Supreme Ruler , Dr . Zacharie , and Bro . Theo . H . Tilton , in connection with the Anglo-American Lodge , will shortly be formed , money in three-fold having been immediately subscribed for the expenses of the charter and regalia .

Bro . Lord Brassey presided , and Bro . Richard Eve , Past G . Treasurer , was one of the chief guests at the anniversary festival held at the Hotel Metropole on Monday evening in aid of the Blind Pension Society . The Duke of Cambridge , Duke Paul of Mecklenburg-Schwerin , and the Duke of Teck were present , and the diplomatic and general circles were well attended .

A review of the Household Cavalry regiments quartered in London , with a battery of Royal Horse Artillery and the 19 th Hussars , was held on Wimbledon Common on Tuesday , in the presence of the Prince and Princess of Wales and their daughters , the Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin , and Prince George of Greece . The force on the ground was about 1000 stronsf , and after

a couple of hours spent in manoeuvring the troops marched past and the Royal party left the Common . The concluding meeting- of the International Conference on the Sugar Bounties' System was held at the Foreign Office , on Saturday last , under the presidency of Bro . Baron Henry de Worms , M . P . The final protocol of

the convention was signed , and when the draft treaty has been submitted to the various powers and her Majesty ' s Government has been placed in possession of the views of the latter , the delegates will be invited to meet in London by the nth August next at the latest in order to sign the treaty .

Bro . the Lord Mayor presided at a meeting of the Livery cf the City of London in the Guildhall on Wednesday , for the purpose of protesting against that part of the Local Government Bid , which contemplates depriving the Livery of the right of electing the Sheriffs

of London and Middlesex , a right which had been vested in them for 800 years . The resolution to give effect to the purpose of the meeting was moved by Alderman Cotton , and seconded by Bro . Sir John Bennett , and adopted unanimously , the proceedings terminating with a vote of thanks to the chairman .

The Anglo-Danish Exhibition at South Kensington , in aid of the fund for rebuilding the British Home for Incurables , of which the Princess of Wales became Patroness a few months after her marriage , was opened bv her Royal Highness , who was accompanied by the Prince of

Wales and their daughters and Prince George of Greece , on Monday . The Royal Albert Hall was the scene of the ceremony , and the assemblage of people to witness it was very numerous . In the evening the Duke of Cambridge presided at the festival dinner of the Institution in the evening , and the subscriptions amounted to £ 5000 .
