It is one of the unchangeable laws of the Institution that nn woman can be made a M ison ; therefore , lodges which admit females to membership can never legally exist . Our French brethren , with that gallantry f . ir which that nation is renowned , at an early date from ihe time Freemasonry was established in that country , recgnising the valuable aid of the women in carrying to completion the work of the Order , sought by the establishment of societies , comprised

of Masons and their female relatives , ind hiving a resemblance to the peculiar organisation ot the Craft , to enlist the sympathies and friendship of the lades in behalf of the Fraternity . These societies were termed " Loges d'Adaption , " because every ludge of femiles was obliged ti be adopted by , a * d under the guardianship of sime regular Masonic lodge . these mystic societies shortly became verv numerous and were exceedingly popular , so in 177 . 1

thi- Grand Ouent of France established a new rite , called '' Rite of Adoption , " and prescribed rules and regulations for its government , one of which wis that no man should be admitted to the meetings except regular Freemasons ; lhat each lodge should b . 1 placed in charge and held under the sancture and warrant of a regular lodge of Masons , whose Master should bi presiding ollicer , assisted by the Mistress of the female lodge . — Masonic Guide .
