Masonic Notes .

Six weeks hence and we shall be face to face with the third and last Anniversary Festival of the yearthat of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys . The day fixed for the celebration of this important event

is Wednesday , the 27 th June , and , as we announced last week , the Board of Stewards has already decided that it shall be held at Brighton , where there is fair reason to hope that the successes of former Festivals at this favourite sea-side resort will be renewed .

Moreover , for several months past it has been known that the Chairman of the day will be Bro . the Rt . Hon . W . L . Jackson , M . P ., Prov . G . M . of West Y ' orkshire , who was installed in office in the autumn of 1893 , and

will thus inaugurate his career as the chief of West Yorkshire Freemasons by presiding at one of the chief annual events of our Society ; nor do we doubt that he will use all his influence , both official and personal , in order to obtain the necessary supplies for

our junior School during the current year . On the few occasions on which he lias been able to take part in our gatherings , and notably at the Girls' School Festival last week , Bro . Jackson has given evidence of the deep

interest he takes in the work of Masonry , and if only the Craft supports him as he deserves to be supported , we shall have the good fortune to record for the third time within four years some very big figures in connection with this particular Institution .

* The prospects otherwise are most encouraging . The Board of Stewards is already some 500 strong , and o f these about two-fifths are West Yorkshire Masons , who may be trusted to support their chief with the loyalty

which has always characterised the members of this influential Province . But we may be sure there will be no lack of good-will or effort on the part of London and the other represented Provinces to bear their legitimate share in the benevolent work . Indeed , we

have heard of some formidable London lists being in course of compilation , and similar lists are certain to be compiled by country lodges , especially by those who have been holding themselves in reserve for this Anniversary .

Still , though the prospects are so encouraging , we must not content ourselves with these and the hope , that when the day arrives , they will be found to have been realised . The Boys' School , with its 268 pupils , and its limited capital of less than ^ 40 , 000 , is always

in need of help . Its annual expenditure is between . 612 , 000 and £ 13 , , while its permanent income does not exceed , £ 1200 . The last four years have witnessed 1 great improvement in the monetary condition of the School , but much remains to be done in order to bring

it to a level in respect of invested capital with the other Charities . We , therefore , appeal most earnestl y to the Craft , whether in town or country , to do all they can in support of " Our Boys . " The affairs of the Institution are well administered , and the training the

pupils receive , as shown by their successes in various public examinations , excellent . Thus , it not only requires support , but deserves it , and we trust this will be lorthcoming in response to Bro . Jackson ' s advocacy at "righton on the 27 th prox .

* * * It was lilting and appropriate that the Duke of Marlborough when he desired to become a member of 'he Craft should prefer to be initiated in the Churchill

Lod ge , No . 47 8 , which was founded in 18 41 at Oxford under the family name of the Marlboroughs . Viscount Valentia , P . G . Warden and Deputy Grand Master of the Province assisted at the ceremony .

The customary loyal and Masonic toasts having received full justice , Bro . A . E . Todd , I . P . M ., proposed "The Health of the Worshipful Master . The members well knew his many e ) ualifications and what he could elo of the ritual , and he would be a great acquisition to the lodge as W . M . The toast was received with enthusiasm .

Bro . Brendel ( the W . M . ) , in responding , said that his very best thanks were due to them for their cordial reception , and to Bro . Todd for his generous words . He woulel do his utmost to study the comfort of the brethren and the interests of the loelge , and he hoped that when his term of

The toast was drunk with acclamation , and Bro . A . E . Todd , on rising to respond , received a heirty welcome . He did not know how to express his thanks , but if he had done his duty he was satisfied . He had tried his best and if the way he had been received that night was evidence that he had given satisfaction he was more than pleased . In appropriate terms the W . There was a considerable quantity of business to be done , but this had wisely been postponed until an emergency meeting on the folloiving

M ., " congratulated the lodge on having to preside o / er them such an experienced brother whose services to Freemasonry had earned for him honours in the province to which he bslonged . He had no doubt that if the brethren would give

him the same support they had accorded to his predecessor , a successful year would be in store for the lodge . The Worshipful Master , in reply , thanked the brethren most sincerely for the cordial manner in which they had received the toast wliich had been proposed by the I . P . M . in such kindly terms . He could assure them thit h 3 felt it a great honour and privilege to be elected to preside over that old and distinguished lodge , and to meet on that

occasion such a large gathering of the brethren . 'They hatl placed him in a position of great responsibility , but it should be his endeavour at all times to discharge theduties and render the ceremonies in a dignified and capable manner , to promote harmony and brotherly love amongst the members , and in every way to study the best interests of the lodge . With the kind support of the officers and brethren , on which he could rely , he should look forward

to having a pleasant and successful year of ollice , and by his conduct in the ^ chair to merit their confidence and approval . The next toast was "The Health of the I . P . M . and Installing Master , Uro . A . M . Whitby . " The VV . M . said he had much pleasure in proposing the toast , which he knew would be received with enthusiasm . Bro . Whitby had proved himself a most capable Alaster and hid performed the various duties of his ollice in such a manner

as to rellect credit on himselt and the lodge . He had managed a somewhat difficult fineness with tact and judgement , and had earned the admiration uf the brethren , lie ( the VV . M . ) had much pleasure in presenting the I . P . M . on behalf of the lodge with a very handsome Past Master ' s jewel , and hoped that whenever it was worn it would call up most pleasant recollections of the successful year of ollice he had experienced . Might he be long spared to give the lodge the benefit of his counsel and instruction .

Bro . Whitby , I . P . M ., replying , expressed the pleasure he felt on receiving the commendation of the brethren , and assured them that he should wear the Pa- ;! Master ' s jewel with pride as it marked their appreciation of his efforts . The W . M ., in proposing " The Visitors , " said he was

very pleased to see such a large number present , one brother especially , who was his father in Freenus uiry , Bro . Petch . He was also pleased to welcome Past and Present Provincial Grand Oilicers from Essex and Herts . Bro . Buck , P . P . S . G . W . Essex , congratulated the I . P . M . on the manner in which he had performed the ceremony ot
