in the Macdonald Lodge , and they worked not only the ceremonies well , but Charity well . That was a most difficult thing lo take up . He entered Masonry lightly , but he was checked by a brother , and he told him he hoped to live and do his work well , and he shortly after succeeded . He went in for the Charities , and joined one or two Masonic Clubs which made life subscriberships . He approved of the plan , for the amount a brother parted with he did not
miss . He hoped by next October they would institute one of these associations , and let the lodge represent the Charities more than it had in the past . Bro . Major Bridges , replying to the toast of "The Past Masters , " said there were now 16 cf those brethren present . In the early days of the lodge when the first Master , Major Irvine , occupied the chair , he ( Bro . Irvine ) was one of the best workers he had ever seen , and he worked in such
careful and dramatic manner that he set an example to the brethren of the lodge that had not yet died out , and he hoped never would , because each Master in the chair had endeavoured to emulate the example set by Bro . Irvine , and hoped they had in a more or less degree been successful . The very latest addition to the ranks of the Past Masters , Bro . Marshall , they were much pleased with , and from the exhibition he had given that night they could see he had
worthily sustained the honour of the lodge . It was now some 25 or 26 years since he ( Major Bridges ) joined , and during all that time never had there been a better Master in the chair than Bro . Marshall . Sir John Monckton said tl ey ought not to be unmindful of the Charities . In the old days trie Macdonald Lodge was well represented , and was Vice-President of one or two of the Charities . He was
tyiite sure that ii the future and another association being formed they would be able to send up a good list . Bro . Kasterbrook , S . W ., replied to the toast of "The Officers , " after which the Tyler ' s toast was given , and the brethren separated , having spent a charming evening . The Pro Grand Master was conducted into the lodge by nine Past Masters , representing the honour due to a Pro Grand Master .
Tyssen Amherst Lodge ( No . 2242 ) . —The installation meeting of this lodge was held on Monday , the 7 th instant , at the Amherst Club , Rectory-road , Stoke Newington , and was attended by a large number of the brethren of the lodge , together with numerous distinguished visitors . M . stated that he had a most pleasing duty to perform , in presenting Bro . Cusworth , the I . P . M ., with a Past Master ' s jewel in gold , a gift from the members of the lodge to mark
their esteem and regard , and their appreciation of the ability he had shown in his conduct of the chair duiing the past year . Bro . Cusworth feelingly thanked the brethren lor their kindness , paying a special tribute to the zeal , excellence , efficiency , regularity and punctuality of his officers , and said that the past year was one of the happiest he had ever spent in Freemasonry . Bru . Lord Amherst of Hackney , P . G . W ., asked the indulgence of the brethren ,
as the first VV . M . of the lodge , to congratulate the lodge on its having carried out so successlully the high ideals formed at its consecration , and on its having entered upon a new stage of its existence , when its own children we e heginning to fill its chair . The present W . M . was the first initiate of the lodge , initiated by him six years ago , and he exhorted him to follow in the steps of the I . P . M . The
work of the evening had afforded him the keenest satisfaction , and he was sure the lodge would hold its U'vn with any under the register of the Grand Lod ^ e i'f England . He congratulated the lodge on its W . AL , snd un its success , not only by its W . M . ' s , its I reasurers , and its Secretaries , but on its own members , II ho contributed so largely to its success by the introduce on of new members . He exhorted tne biethren to exeicise

He congratulated the Installing MasterMipon his able and efficient working , andthe officers for their ability and attention to detail . He exhorted the new officers to continue the excellent working done in the lodge , and impressed upon the brethren that it was their duty to ensure the prosperity of the loelge by taking a lively interest in its working , and by introducing suitable candidates for initiation .
Bro . Le Strange , P . G . D ., D . P . G . M . Norfolk , also responded , and thanked the brethren for their hearty reception of the toast . He thought -Masons were to be congratulated on having men of such position and ability as their present Grand Officers to guide them . He was gratified and pleased that that lodge was not as many London lodges were , excellent only in the Fourth Degree , for hc
had been as surprised as delighted by the fluency , the excellence , and the precision of the working . He hail been present at the consecration of the lodge , and it had given him great pleasure to re-visit the lodsre after six yea's . Hro . Cusworth proposed "The Health ol the VV . M ., " and felt sure the Tyssen Amherst Lodge would continue to improve in numbers and influence under his guidance .
The VVorshipful Master thanked Bro . Cusworth and the brethren for their good wishes , and hoped the brethren would give him their indulgence in following such an excellent Master as his predecessor , but assured them he would do his utmost to render himself worthy of the great honour they had that day conf-rred on him . He then proposed " 'The Health of the Past Masters , " with special
reference to the Installing Master , who ably responded . Bro . J . Terry , P . G . S . B ., Sec . R . M . B I ., in responding for "The Masonic Charities , " expressed his regret that Bro . McLeod was unavoidably compelled to be absent . He congratulated Bro . Cusworth , I . P . M ., who was going up for the "Boys ' , " on his excellent list , which , he was glad to see , included 20 guineas from the lodge and 10 guineas from the
lodge of instruction , and he hoped that when the W . M . went up for the " Old People " in February next thc lodge and thebrethren would give him their liberal support in the cause of so deserving a Charity . The toastof "The Visitors" was responded to in eloquent speeches by Bros . Potter , P . M . S 13 , and Hicklin , P . M . 12 G 1 .
During the evening some excellent songs ivre given by Madame Alice Carter , Miss Edith Serpell , and Bros . Coram and Mordy , which were most thoroughly enjoyed , Bro . VV . E . Dippie , Org ., ably pre-iding at the piano . 'The 'Tyler ' s toast concluded one of the most enjoyable , as well as the most successful , meetings of the Tyssen-Amherst Lodge .

He regietted the unavoidable absence of the P . G . M . and the Dep . P . G . M ., whose public duties had called them to other parts of the country .

Proposing "The Health of the Installing and Immediate Past Master , " the VV . M . expressed the satisfaction of all with thc fluency and skill dhp ' ayedhy Bro . 'Tower in the performance of the ceremonies during his year of office , and particularly in that of that day . He had be-n a most genial occupant of the chair , and had endeared himself to all of the brethren , who hoped he would long live to bc ' of service
to the lodge . He also coupled with the toast the name of the first Master of the lodge , Bro . II . N . Price , and elicited a hearty response from the brethren in his allusions to that brother ' s illness and the gratification felt by all at his recovery . Bro . Tower , I . P . M ., assured the brethren that whatever he had done during the past year was owing , in the
hrst instance , to the kind supoort and assistance he had received from his I . P . M ., Bro . Price , and he felt he owed him a debt of gratitude for his valuable advice , and ever ready assistance . He had also receive I loyal support from his oilicers , and to that fact he attributed a large measure of the success achieved during the past year . Bto . II . N . P . ice said it vvas a very pleasing thing for
him to be present , and he thanked the W . M . and I . P . M . for their kind expressions . He felt sure that the brethren would recognise the peculiar claims of the Boys ' School , as the VV . M . was an energetic member of its Board of Management , and a most generous supporter of all the Institutions . He had kindly consented to attach himself as
Sreward from that lodge to the next Festivil , and the brethren woulel most assuredly never regret giving assistance , to the fullest extent of their power , to his list . MANCHESTER . Shal < spere Lodg-e ( No . 1009 ) . —We bad great pleasuie in visiting the installation meeting of this lodge on the 4 th inst . at the Freemasons' Hall , ' Cooperstreet . We regret on account of our limited space we are not able to give a detailed list of those present , but it will be very interesting to know there were 711 brethren present .
RIVER HEAD . Amherst Lodge ( No . 122 , 1 ) . —The meeting of this lodge which falls in the " merry month of May" has many attractions for its members , especially the London com i agent , who mourn if thev miss the run down to Sevenoaks to meet their brethren of the hop county . Visitors , too , who have ueen once at the installation
meeting of the Amherst , hesitate not to accept again , as the recorder of the last gathering personally can testify . On Saturday , the 5 th inst ., there was a fuller attendance than has been known by the oldest member of the lodge , not only at woik but also at " play , " and very few missed the former , thereby witnessing . 1 most interesting display of ritual all round .
Bro . Burford , VV . M ., opened the lodge , assisted by all his officers , supported by tight Past Masters , and with a goodly array of " purple " around him . After the transaction ol routine business , in the course of which it was reported that there was still a most satisfactory balance in hand , justifying the quotation which the worthy and veteran Sicreury , llro . work of the evening had afforded him the keenest satisfaction , and he was sure the lodge would hold its U'vn with any under the register of the Grand Lod ^ e i'f England . Craft Masonry.
He congratulated the Installing MasterMipon his able and efficient working , andthe officers for their ability and attention to detail . He exhorted the new officers to continue the excellent working done in the lodge , and impressed upon the brethren that it was their duty to ensure the prosperity of the loelge by taking a lively interest in its working , and by introducing suitable candidates for initiation .
Bro . Le Strange , P . G . D ., D . P . G . M . Norfolk , also responded , and thanked the brethren for their hearty reception of the toast . He thought -Masons were to be congratulated on having men of such position and ability as their present Grand Officers to guide them . He was gratified and pleased that that lodge was not as many London lodges were , excellent only in the Fourth Degree , for hc
had been as surprised as delighted by the fluency , the excellence , and the precision of the working . He hail been present at the consecration of the lodge , and it had given him great pleasure to re-visit the lodsre after six yea's . Hro . Cusworth proposed "The Health ol the VV . M ., " and felt sure the Tyssen Amherst Lodge would continue to improve in numbers and influence under his guidance .
The VVorshipful Master thanked Bro . Cusworth and the brethren for their good wishes , and hoped the brethren would give him their indulgence in following such an excellent Master as his predecessor , but assured them he would do his utmost to render himself worthy of the great honour they had that day conf-rred on him . He then proposed " 'The Health of the Past Masters , " with special
reference to the Installing Master , who ably responded . Bro . J . Terry , P . G . S . B ., Sec . R . M . B I ., in responding for "The Masonic Charities , " expressed his regret that Bro . McLeod was unavoidably compelled to be absent . He congratulated Bro . Cusworth , I . P . M ., who was going up for the "Boys ' , " on his excellent list , which , he was glad to see , included 20 guineas from the lodge and 10 guineas from the
lodge of instruction , and he hoped that when the W . M . went up for the " Old People " in February next thc lodge and thebrethren would give him their liberal support in the cause of so deserving a Charity . The toastof "The Visitors" was responded to in eloquent speeches by Bros . Potter , P . M . S 13 , and Hicklin , P . M . 12 G 1 .
During the evening some excellent songs ivre given by Madame Alice Carter , Miss Edith Serpell , and Bros . Coram and Mordy , which were most thoroughly enjoyed , Bro . VV . E . Dippie , Org ., ably pre-iding at the piano . 'The 'Tyler ' s toast concluded one of the most enjoyable , as well as the most successful , meetings of the Tyssen-Amherst Lodge .

Provincial Meetings.
Proposing "The Health of the Installing and Immediate Past Master , " the VV . M . expressed the satisfaction of all with thc fluency and skill dhp ' ayedhy Bro . 'Tower in the performance of the ceremonies during his year of office , and particularly in that of that day . He had be-n a most genial occupant of the chair , and had endeared himself to all of the brethren , who hoped he would long live to bc ' of service
to the lodge . He also coupled with the toast the name of the first Master of the lodge , Bro . II . N . Price , and elicited a hearty response from the brethren in his allusions to that brother ' s illness and the gratification felt by all at his recovery . Bro . Tower , I . P . M ., assured the brethren that whatever he had done during the past year was owing , in the
hrst instance , to the kind supoort and assistance he had received from his I . P . M ., Bro . Price , and he felt he owed him a debt of gratitude for his valuable advice , and ever ready assistance . He had also receive I loyal support from his oilicers , and to that fact he attributed a large measure of the success achieved during the past year . Bto . II . N . him to be present , and he thanked the W . M . and I . P . M . for their kind expressions . He felt sure that the brethren would recognise the peculiar claims of the Boys ' School , as the VV . M . was an energetic member of its Board of Management , and a most generous supporter of all the Institutions . He had kindly consented to attach himself as
Sreward from that lodge to the next Festivil , and the brethren woulel most assuredly never regret giving assistance , to the fullest extent of their power , to his list . At the banquet , when the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given , the toast of "The Immortal Bard" was proposed by Iiro . J . Halden , P . We regret on account of our limited space we are not able to give a detailed list of those present , but it will be very interesting to know there were 711 brethren present .
RIVER HEAD . Amherst Lodge ( No . 122 , 1 ) . —The meeting of this lodge which falls in the " merry month of May" has many attractions for its members , especially the London com i agent , who mourn if thev miss the run down to Sevenoaks to meet their brethren of the hop county . Visitors , too , who have ueen once at the installation
meeting of the Amherst , hesitate not to accept again , as the recorder of the last gathering personally can testify . On Saturday , the 5 th inst ., there was a fuller attendance than has been known by the oldest member of the lodge , not only at woik but also at " play , " and very few missed the former , thereby witnessing . 1 most interesting display of ritual all round .
Bro . Burford , VV . M ., opened the lodge , assisted by all his officers , supported by tight Past Masters , and with a goodly array of " purple " around him . After the transaction ol routine business , in the course of which it was reported that there was still a most satisfactory balance in hand , justifying the quotation which the worthy and veteran Sicreury , llro .
