M . presented toBroiliurford the Past Master ' s jewel which . the lodge had voted to him . There being a large number nf visitors , much time was saved by the tendering of H . G . W . to the W . M .. by one in the name of all , an example worthy

of imitation . An adjournment was then made to the parish rooms , where tables were laid for 70 guests , but two or three remained unoccupied . Bro . Waller , of . the Amherst Arms Hotel , put on a banquet of much excellence , everything being oraised , and the moving spirit in the arrangement ( Bro . E . I . Dodd , P . M . ) came in for compliment as well as

the caterer . After dinner , the customary toasts were proposed , but brief and pithy speeches were the order . For the toast of " The Provincial Grand Ofiicers , " Bro . Holcroft made an excellent response , and spoke of the esteem , and indeed affection , which the whole Provirce had for the Earl of Amherst , its head in Masonry ; and wished the lodge , which it had given him great pleasure to

visit , continued prosperity and success . For " Trie Visitors " several were called upon to speak , and from all came alike testimony as to the perfect woiking which had been displayed in lodge , and to the splendid hospitality shown afterwards . 1 he toast of " The Worshipful Master" had a very warm reception , and Bro . II . W . Dodd made the most nf the to ? st which the toast list supplied— " 'Tis known I ever

have studied physic" { Pericles ) .. Here it may be mentioned that the W . M . is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of London and Surgeon at the Westminster Optbalmic ard the Royal Free ( Gray ' s Inn-lane ) Hospitals , and the quotation was strictly correct , for he mentioned that he formed a determination to follow the profession when but 13 years old , and was the eighth in succession in his family practising surgery .

Bro . Duret ' s services as Installing Master were duly acknowledged , and after the / . P . M . had thanked the brethren for the kindness shown him duringhisyear of oflice , and the indulgence with which his deficiencies were viewed ( to which the brethren demurred ) , the Senior Past Master responded . Bro . E . J . Dedd , P . P . G Org . Kent , reminded the brethren of the kdge that it was 17 years since he was in the chair , and well he renirmbercd the occasion . They

were then but 10 , but there was a good number of visitors , and from that time onwa'd the lodge had gone on increasing in strength and irlluence , until now , he was proud to be able to say , the Amherst Lodge ranked with the best in the previr . ee . Ver lhat lhey had to thank Bros . Puret , Jewell , Durlrall , and one or two now no longer with them , ard lie feathering lhat night amply repaid him ( Bro . Dodd ) for the woik ar . d anxiety 1 f years past . They had

never had such an assembly before , and he was grateful to tbe Prov . Grarel Officers ard the visitors generally for helping to make the installation of his young kinsman such a brilliant success . For seme yeais past Bro . Dcdd has rtmaiked upon the number of Past Masters present at installations , and time after time it has been " we are seven , " but tbat night he had to vary the expression , there being nine at table .

The oilier trasls came in order , and a hearty welcome was jcroidcd lhat of " I he Treasurer and Secretary , " who stood by the ledre in critical perieds , never likely to recur under Ihe changed Older of things . Bro . Herbert Si harlau ditccted the music which agreeably varied Ihe speeches , and beside accompanying all comets , he sang se \ eral ditlies in his own incomparable style . We are glad to find the lodge going on so successfully as it well deserves . 'The brethren having assembled , the lodge was opened by Bro . T . E . Williams , VV . M . 'Ihe minutes of the previous meeting were read and conlirmed . The Treasurer's accounts were submitted

and favourably reported by the Auditois . The VV . M . installed his successor , and appointed as his installing ofiicers Bros . Patric Hunter , P . M ., P . P . G . W ., as S . W . ; G . S . Smiih , P . M ., P . G . Org ., as J . W . j and Vrm'Adams , P . M ., P . P . G . D . C , as l . G . Bro . R . A . Chadwick , S . VV ., VV . M . elect , was presented by Bro . John Sutton , P . M ., P . P . G . D . C , and he was r \ tly installed into the chair , and we ce n- ^ ialulate Bro . Williams upon the admirable way in

which he ptife > imcd the ceremony in its entirety , a'd with greit effect . It was not surprising he was complimented very highly after the proceedings . The r . euly-installed W . M . was prcclairr . ed by Bro . Joe Lees , P . M ., P . G . S ., and he was duly saluted in Ihe 1 tiree Degrees . . Bro . Dr . Alfitd Chailitk , P . M ., pre cried the woiking tools , Bro . Warwick Word , P . M ., P . P . G . Std . Br ., addressed thc officers , W . M ,, and brethren , with great ability and

effectiveness . Bro . A . Chailick addressed the brethren . The service was fully choral , under the direction of Bro . Walter Wilkinson , Org . Ihe other brethren taking part were Bros . W . Calvert ( alto ) , Sam Bo ^ ce , P . M . ( tenor ) , and Tom Whitehead , P . M ., P . P . G . D . C . ( bsss ) . The numerous visitors present gave " Hearty good wi'hes" and congratulated Bro . Chadwick upon attaining his high position in the lodge . A very valuable gold Past Master ' s

jewel was presented by the VV . M . for'the mernlu rs of the lodge to Bro . T . V .. Williams , I . P . M ., for the very great ability he has displayed during his year cf ollice , which gift was gracefully accepti d . Subsequently a banquet was held al the Piirce of Wales Hotel , when the loyal anel Masonic toasts w \ te proposed

and responded to , and the pleasure of the evening was greatly enhanced by songs and recitations given by Bros . Calvert , Boyce , Whitehead , Franciys , and Round . Thc accompanist was Bro . Walter Wi kinson , Org . The handsome jewel was manufactured by Bro . George Kenning , and was much admired .

Provincial Meetings.

WATFORD : Earl of Clarendon Lodge ( No . 19 S 4 ) . — On Thursday , the 2 ( 3 th ult ., the members of this lodge met at Freemasons' Hall , for their annual gathering , there being a large number of visiting brethren from other of the Herts lodges , as well as from the Metropolis and neighbouring provinces . Bro . Boydell , with ereat ability , installed Bro . J . Pearce Taylor , S . VV ., as W . M . I ' or the ensuing

year , the ceremony being worked with even more than Bro . Boydell's usual power . The newly-installed Master then invested the following officers : Bros . T . C . Grant , I . P . M . ; R . Overy , S . VV . ; J . Southam . J . W . ; S . Goodchild , Treas . j James Rogers , Sec ; H . M . Dove , S . D . j H . Buck , . V . D . ; H . Haywood , l . G . ; W . T . Graves , D . C ; E . P . Rowse , Steward ; and J . Percival , Tyler . Bro . J . J . Rogers was chosen to represent the ledge

on the Herts Chanty Committee . Afterwards the members of the lodge dined together in the Corn Exchange , an excellent dinner being served by Bro . VV . H . Murrow , of the Essex Arms . The newlyinstalled Mas t er , Bro . Taylor , presided , and was supporteel by the brethren already named and others . The usual Masonic toasts were honoured , it being stated that Bro . T . F . Halsey ; M . P ., Prov . Grand Master , would

have been present , but that Parliamentary duties prevented him from leaving-the House of Commons that evening . In giving " The Provincial Grand Officers , Present and Past , " the W . M . referred to the goo'd work not only of the Provircial Grand Master , but of the Deputy Provincial Grand Master ( Bro . Lake ) and of Bro . Keyser . Rro . Grant , I . P . M ., in giving "The Health of the W . M . "—a toast received with much warmth and

fuelingspoke of the abi ' ity that brother had shown already in the discharge of those dulies in the lodge which had up to the present time devolved upon him . Bro . J . J . Rogers , P . M ., P . P . G . Std . Br ., gave "The Installing Master , " which called forth a happy speech from Bro . Boydell , » hn urged younger Masons to work and do their part in maintaining the high repute of the Earl of Clarendon Lodge .

To the toast of "The Visitors , " Bro . Larkin replied , and to that of "The Past Masters" Bros . Goodchild , P . M ., P . P . G . Std . Br ., and VV . T . Graves , P . M ., P . P . G . S . B ., suitably replied . Bros . Overy , S . W ., and Southam . J . V . V ., made capital speeches in response to the toast of " The Officers , " in proposing which the W . M . expressed the hope lhat in all and everyone he had that day invested he should find a true supporter at every ordinary lodge gathering .

During the evening the VV . M . presented Bro . Grant , the outgoing Master , with a handsome and valuable Masonic jewel , suitably inscribed , in recognition of the able manner in which he performed the duties of his oflice , Bro . Grant suitably replying . The musical arrangements of the evening , uh ' ch were under Ihe care of Bro . Arthur Spicer , were cf a most agreeable character , the contributors to the musical programme including Bros . Lovett King , 2190 ; VV . James , H . L . Barrett , H . "Haywood , and Arthur Spicer .

Fidelity Chapter ( No . 3 ) . —A meeting of this chapter was held at Freemasons' Hall , Great Oueen-street , on the 4 th inst . Among those present were Comps . Radcliffe , M . E . Z . ; Stevens , H . ; Larcomb , J . ; W . J . Collens , P . P . G . N ., P . Z ., S . E . ; Capt . T . C . Walls , D . G . D . C , S . N . ; Mapleton , P . S . ; H . ] . Lardner , P . P . G . Std . Br ., ist Asst . S . ; G . Heming , D . C . j F . McDougal , P . / .. j Birch , P / .. j" Samuel Cochrane , P . G . Treas . j Nash

Pratt , Larter , and Goddard , Janitor . The minutes of the previous convocation were read and conliimed . Apologies for non-attendance were received from Comps . j . Heming , P . / .., Treas ! j F . Graves , P . Z . ; Weeks , P . Z . ; and others . Before the chapter was closed a vote of congratulation was unanimously passed , and ordered to be entered on the minutes , to Comp . T . C . Walls , on his appointment as an ollicer of Grand Chapter .

A bani ] uet followed , the usual toasts receiving full justice . Comp . S . Cochrane responded on behalf of "The Grand Officers . " The I . P . Z ., in proposing "The Health of the M . E . Z ., " rrgretted that there had been no candidate for exaltation that evening . Comp . Radcliffe was a good worker in the Royal Arch Degree , and hail been so for many years . In addition to his Masonic abilities he ( ihe M . E . Z . ) was a

most genial and kind-hearted man . This toast having been duly honoured , the M . E / .. brielly acknowledged the compliment . "The health of the Second and TI ird Principals " followed . In proposing the toast , the M . E . Z . spoke'in high tetms of commendation of the services rendered to Masonry by Comps . Stevens and Larcomb .

1 his pledge having been responded to , "The Health of the Past Principals" came next in order , and was coupled with the names of Comps . Bitch and McDougall . Comps . W . J . Collens and Mapleton re plied to the toast of "The S . K ., Treasurer , and Oilicers . " • Duiirg the proceedings Comps . Nash , Cochrane , Collens , and oihers musically entertained the companions .

Hornsey Chapter ( No . 890 ) . —A meeting of this chapter was held at Anderton ' s Hotel , Fleet-street , on Ihe 24 th ultimo . Present : Comps . Altman , M . E . Z . ; Dehane , H . ; Laundy , J . ; J . Stephens , P . P . J . G . W . Bucks ; and Gumming , Trias . T he chapter was opened , and the minutes read and confirmed . 'The officers of the year were elected , Comp . Dehane , P . P . S . G D . Essex , and Chaiiiy Repiesentative Essex , being installed into the chair

of M . E . Z . for ihe second time in this chapter , evidently to the great satisfaction cf the companions . Comp . Dehane is one of thc greatest and best workers in Arch Masonry , anel owing to his unremitting care and perseverance the great success of the Hornsey Chapter is due . He installed his II . and J . in a must admirable manner , investing his ofiicers with a few kindly words to each , impressing upon

them the necessity ot making themselves thorough masters of their different offices , and to keep up the prestige anel reputation of the Hornsey Chapter , viz : Comps . Laundy , IL ; Holroyd , J . ; Stephens , P . P S . G . W . Bucks , S . E . ; P . P . Gumming , Treas , ; Rudall , S . N . j Peall , P . S . j Baxter , ist A . S . j and P . P . Brandon , 2 nd A . S . All business being ended , the chapter was closed .

The companions adjourned to the banquet , which was served under the supervision of Bro . A . Clemow . The toasts anel speeches were short , and very much to the point , " The Health of Comp . Dehane" being most enthusiastically received , who , in returning thanks , expressed the great pleasure it was to him to feel sure the

companions supported him in bringing about success to their chapter . The toasts of "The H . and J . " and "The Officers " were also given and expressed in the most sincere terms , and was heartily responded to . The Janitor ' s toast brought the evening's proceedings to a very happy conclusion .

Farringdon Without Chapter ( No . 1 74 ^ , —A meeting of this chapter was held at Anderton ' s Hotel , Fleet-street , on Monday , the 30 th ult ., when there were present , amongst others , Comps . E . Burritt Lane , Mus . Bac , M . E . Z . j J . Young , P . M .. H . ; J . S . Plummer , J . Capt . Walls , P . P . G . P . S ., P . Z ., S . E . ; H . J . Lardner , P . P . G . Std . Br ., P . Z ., Treas . ; G . Herbert , P . Z . ; E ,

Mallet , P . Z . 1623 , Janitor . The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed , the ballot was laken as a joining member for Comp . Walter Lurcott , P . S . 704 , and the election was unanimous . It was also taken on behalf of Bro . John Michael Murphy , J . D . 1745 . and he , being in attendance , was duly exalted . The M . E . MANCHESTER . Humphrey Chetham Chapter ( No . 645 ) . The yearly installation was held on Tuesday , the S : h inst . Comp . VV . Brooks , H ., was installed into the first chair , Comp . Arnold to the second , and Comp . N . Herfwood to

the thiid . All the beautiful ceremonies wete performed by Comp . J . H . Sillitoe , P . P . G . H . East Lancashire , in a most superb manner , and who illustrated the Supreme Degree in a most e ffective manner . Healsoinvesttd and addressed the officeis .

TWICKENHAM . Sir Francis Burdett Chapter ( No . 1503 ) . —This chapter met for the dispatch of bu-iness at the Albany Hotel , on the nth instant , when there were present , amonglothers , Comps . the Rev . S . T . H . Saunders , M . A ., P . P . G . J ., P . Z ., M . E . Z . ; A . Toulmin , iun ., H . ; VV . | . Hakim , ' J . ; E . W . Davis , S . N . j W . Taylor , P . Z ., P . P .

G . J ., Treas . ; G . J . Dunkley , P . Z , P . P . G . Org . ; and Harrison , Janitor . The minutes of the previous convocation having been read and confirmed , the sum of 10 guineas was voted to the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , per Comp . the Rev . S . T . H . The ceremonies being performed in a manner that left but little to be desired . Among those invested were Comps . E . W . Davis , S . N . ; Taylor , Treas . ; and Hatrison , Janitor . The Auditors' report was read , adopted , and a vote of thanks passed to the Treasurer .

The financial position of the chapter is most satisfactory , and which is main ' y due to the careful guidance of Comp . Taylor . A letter was read from Comp . Smiles , P . Z ., acknowledging the vote of condolence that had been iorwarded to him on the death of his wife . Theresignation of Comp . the Rev . R . Hosken , M . A ., P . P . G . J ., was received with regret . Comps . R . H . Thrupp , P . Z ., P . G .

Std . Br ., G . H . in charge ; and Capt . T . C . Walls , V . L , S . E ., D . G . D . C , sent apologies for non-attendance . The chapter was then closed . A banquet followed . Comp . A . Toulmin , jun ., M . E . Z-. gave the respective toasts with commendable brevity . During the proceedings Comp . G . J , Dunkley , P . Z ., P . P . G . Org ., entertained the companions instrumentally ami vocally .

Bard of Avon Preceptory ( No . 127 ) - The installation meeting of this preceptory was held al Golden-square , on the 7 th inst . In the absence of Sir Knight Harry Nicholls , the chair was occupied by Sir Knight W . E . Chapman , who opened the preceptory , and proceeded to instal Comp . McManus as a member of the Order . 'This ceremony having been , satisfactorily performed , the installation of Eminent Preceptor then took place , and

Sir Knight William Lake , who had been eketeel at the previous regular meeting , was inducted into the chair with all the forms and rites appertaining to this Degree . The h- " - appointed his officers as follows : Sir Knights Frederick Mead , Constable ; Lennox Browne , Marshal ; Major Clifford Probyn , Prelate ; Col . Chas . Harding , Tieas . J Will . E . Chapman , Registrar j Gordon Smith , Sub-Marshal ; Harold Burk-ist Std . Hr . j Herbert Wright ,

P . then referred in grateful terms to the work that had been done by Sir Knight Will . E . Chapman , m connection with what amounttd almost to a resuscitation ot the preceptory . Not only had his year of office as f . X been a signal success , but he had followed it up as Registrar

by the most painstaking efforts to place the preceptory on a sound footing . He thought the sir kniuhts should show their appreciation of his work by presenting Sr Knig ht Chapman with a Past Preceptor ' s jewel and collarette , which he would ask him to accept in the name of the p ' ceptory . This was carried with | acclamation . After the usual business , the sir knights adjourned to a banquet at the Cafe Royal , at which the E . P . presided .

M . is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of London and Surgeon at the Westminster Optbalmic ard the Royal Free ( Gray ' s Inn-lane ) Hospitals , and the quotation was strictly correct , for he mentioned that he formed a determination to follow the profession when but 13 years old , and was the eighth in succession in his family practising surgery .

Bro . Duret ' s services as Installing Master were duly acknowledged , and after the / . P . M . had thanked the brethren for the kindness shown him duringhisyear of oflice , and the indulgence with which his deficiencies were viewed ( to which the brethren demurred ) , the Senior Past Master responded . Bro . E . J . Dedd , P . P . G Org . Kent , reminded the brethren of the kdge that it was 17 years since he was in the chair , and well he renirmbercd the occasion . They

were then but 10 , but there was a good number of visitors , and from that time onwa'd the lodge had gone on increasing in strength and irlluence , until now , he was proud to be able to say , the Amherst Lodge ranked with the best in the previr . ee . WATFORD : Earl of Clarendon Lodge ( No . 19 S 4 ) . — On Thursday , the 2 ( 3 th ult ., the members of this lodge met at Freemasons' Hall , for their annual gathering , there being a large number of visiting brethren from other of the Herts lodges , as well as from the Metropolis and neighbouring provinces . Bro . Boydell , with ereat ability , installed Bro . J . Pearce Taylor , S . VV ., as W . M . I ' or the ensuing

year , the ceremony being worked with even more than Bro . Boydell's usual power . The newly-installed Master then invested the following officers : Bros . T . C . Grant , I . P . M . ; R . fuelingspoke of the abi ' ity that brother had shown already in the discharge of those dulies in the lodge which had up to the present time devolved upon him . Bro . J . J . Rogers , P . M ., P . P . G . Std . Br ., gave "The Installing Master , " which called forth a happy speech from Bro . Boydell , » hn urged younger Masons to work and do their part in maintaining the high repute of the Earl of Clarendon Lodge .

To the toast of "The Visitors , " Bro . Larkin replied , and to that of "The Past Masters" Bros . Goodchild , P . M ., P . P . G . Std . Br ., and VV . T . Graves , P . M ., P . P . G . S . B ., suitably replied . Bros . Overy , S . W ., and Southam . J . V . V ., made capital speeches in response to the toast of " The Officers , " in proposing which the W . M . expressed the hope lhat in all and everyone he had that day invested he should find a true supporter at every ordinary lodge gathering .

During the evening the VV . M . presented Bro . Grant , the outgoing Master , with a handsome and valuable Masonic jewel , suitably inscribed , in recognition of the able manner in which he performed the duties of his oflice , Bro . Z ., " rrgretted that there had been no candidate for exaltation that evening . Comp . Radcliffe was a good worker in the Royal Arch Degree , and hail been so for many years . In addition to his Masonic abilities he ( ihe M . E . Z . ) was a

most genial and kind-hearted man . This toast having been duly honoured , the M . E / .. brielly acknowledged the compliment . "The health of the Second and TI ird Principals " followed . In proposing the toast , the M . E . Z . spoke'in high tetms of commendation of the services rendered to Masonry by Comps . Stevens and Larcomb .

1 his pledge having been responded to , "The Health of the Past Principals" came next in order , and was coupled with the names of Comps . Bitch and McDougall . Comps . W . J . Collens and Mapleton re plied to the toast of "The S . K ., Treasurer , and Oilicers . " • Duiirg the proceedings Comps . Hornsey Chapter ( No . 890 ) . —A meeting of this chapter was held at Anderton ' s Hotel , Fleet-street , on Ihe 24 th ultimo . Present : Comps . Altman , M . E . Z . ; Dehane , H . ; Laundy , J . ; J . Stephens , P . P . J . G . W . Bucks ; and Gumming , Trias . T he chapter was opened , and the minutes read and confirmed . 'The officers of the year were elected , Comp . Dehane , P . P . S . G D . Essex , and Chaiiiy Repiesentative Essex , being installed into the chair

of M . E . Z . for ihe second time in this chapter , evidently to the great satisfaction cf the companions . Comp . Dehane is one of thc greatest and best workers in Arch Masonry , anel owing to his unremitting care and perseverance the great success of the Hornsey Chapter is due . He installed his II . and J . in a must admirable manner , investing his ofiicers with a few kindly words to each , impressing upon

The companions adjourned to the banquet , which was served under the supervision of Bro . A . Clemow . The toasts anel speeches were short , and very much to the point , " The Health of Comp . Dehane" being most enthusiastically received , who , in returning thanks , expressed the great pleasure it was to him to feel sure the

companions supported him in bringing about success to their chapter . The toasts of "The H . and J . " and "The Officers " were also given and expressed in the most sincere terms , and was heartily responded to . The Janitor ' s toast brought the evening's proceedings to a very happy conclusion .

Z ., acknowledging the vote of condolence that had been iorwarded to him on the death of his wife . Theresignation of Comp . the Rev . R . Hosken , M . A ., P . P . G . In the absence of Sir Knight Harry Nicholls , the chair was occupied by Sir Knight W . E . Chapman , who opened the preceptory , and proceeded to instal Comp . McManus as a member of the Order . 'This ceremony having been , satisfactorily performed , the installation of Eminent Preceptor then took place , and

Sir Knight William Lake , who had been eketeel at the previous regular meeting , was inducted into the chair with all the forms and rites appertaining to this Degree . by the most painstaking efforts to place the preceptory on a sound footing . He thought the sir kniuhts should show their appreciation of his work by presenting Sr Knig ht Chapman with a Past Preceptor ' s jewel and collarette , which he would ask him to accept in the name of the p ' ceptory . This was carried with | acclamation . After the usual business , the sir knights adjourned to a banquet at the Cafe Royal , at which the E . P . presided .
