M . ) came in for compliment as well as
the caterer . After dinner , the customary toasts were proposed , but brief and pithy speeches were the order . For the toast of " The Provincial Grand Ofiicers , " Bro . Holcroft made an excellent response , and spoke of the esteem , and indeed affection , which the whole Provirce had for the Earl of Amherst , its head in Masonry ; and wished the lodge , which it had given him great pleasure to
visit , continued prosperity and success . For " Trie Visitors " several were called upon to speak , and from all came alike testimony as to the perfect woiking which had been displayed in lodge , and to the splendid hospitality shown afterwards . 1 he toast of " The Worshipful Master" had a very warm reception , and Bro . II . W . Dodd made the most nf the to ? st which the toast list supplied— " 'Tis known I ever
have studied physic" { Pericles ) .. Here it may be mentioned that the W . M . is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of London and Surgeon at the Westminster Optbalmic ard the Royal Free ( Gray ' s Inn-lane ) Hospitals , and the quotation was strictly correct , for he mentioned that he formed a determination to follow the profession when but 13 years old , and was the eighth in succession in his family practising surgery .
Bro . Duret ' s services as Installing Master were duly acknowledged , and after the / . P . M . had thanked the brethren for the kindness shown him duringhisyear of oflice , and the indulgence with which his deficiencies were viewed ( to which the brethren demurred ) , the Senior Past Master responded . Bro . E . J . Dedd , P . P . G Org . Kent , reminded the brethren of the kdge that it was 17 years since he was in the chair , and well he renirmbercd the occasion . They

WATFORD : Earl of Clarendon Lodge ( No . 19 S 4 ) . — On Thursday , the 2 ( 3 th ult ., the members of this lodge met at Freemasons' Hall , for their annual gathering , there being a large number of visiting brethren from other of the Herts lodges , as well as from the Metropolis and neighbouring provinces . Bro . Boydell , with ereat ability , installed Bro . J . Pearce Taylor , S . VV ., as W . M . I ' or the ensuing
year , the ceremony being worked with even more than Bro . Boydell's usual power . The newly-installed Master then invested the following officers : Bros . T . C . Grant , I . P . M . ; R . Overy , S . VV . ; J . Southam . J . W . ; S . Goodchild , Treas . j James Rogers , Sec ; H . M . Dove , S . D . j H . Buck , . V . D . ; H . Haywood , l . G . ; W . T . Graves , D . C ; E . P . on the Herts Chanty Committee . Afterwards the members of the lodge dined together in the Corn Exchange , an excellent dinner being served by Bro . VV . H . Murrow , of the Essex Arms . The newlyinstalled Mas t er , Bro . Taylor , presided , and was supporteel by the brethren already named and others . The usual Masonic toasts were honoured , it being stated that Bro . T . F . Halsey ; M . P ., Prov . Grand Master , would
have been present , but that Parliamentary duties prevented him from leaving-the House of Commons that evening . In giving " The Provincial Grand Officers , Present and Past , " the W . M . referred to the goo'd work not only of the Provircial Grand Master , but of the Deputy Provincial Grand Master ( Bro . Lake ) and of Bro . Keyser . Rro . Grant , I . P . M ., in giving "The Health of the W . M . "—a toast received with much warmth and
fuelingspoke of the abi ' ity that brother had shown already in the discharge of those dulies in the lodge which had up to the present time devolved upon him . Bro . J . J . Rogers , P . M ., P . P . G . Std . Br ., gave "The Installing Master , " which called forth a happy speech from Bro . Boydell , » hn urged younger Masons to work and do their part in maintaining the high repute of the Earl of Clarendon Lodge .
To the toast of "The Visitors , " Bro . Larkin replied , and to that of "The Past Masters" Bros . Goodchild , P . M ., P . P . G . Std . Br ., and VV . T . Graves , P . M ., P . P . G . S . WATFORD : Earl of Clarendon Lodge ( No . 19 S 4 ) . — On Thursday , the 2 ( 3 th ult ., the members of this lodge met at Freemasons' Hall , for their annual gathering , there being a large number of visiting brethren from other of the Herts lodges , as well as from the Metropolis and neighbouring provinces . Bro . Boydell , with ereat ability , installed Bro . J . Pearce Taylor , S . VV ., as W . M . I ' or the ensuing
year , the ceremony being worked with even more than Bro . Boydell's usual power . The newly-installed Master then invested the following officers : Bros . T . C . Grant , I . P . M . ; R . on the Herts Chanty Committee . Afterwards the members of the lodge dined together in the Corn Exchange , an excellent dinner being served by Bro . VV . H . Murrow , of the Essex Arms . The newlyinstalled Mas t er , Bro . Taylor , presided , and was supporteel by the brethren already named and others . The usual Masonic toasts were honoured , it being stated that Bro . T . F . Halsey ; M . P ., Prov . Grand Master , would
have been present , but that Parliamentary duties prevented him from leaving-the House of Commons that evening . In giving " The Provincial Grand Officers , Present and Past , " the W . M . referred to the goo'd work not only of the Provircial Grand Master , but of the Deputy Provincial Grand Master ( Bro . Lake ) and of Bro . Keyser . Rro . Grant , I . P . M ., in giving "The Health of the W . M . "—a toast received with much warmth and
fuelingspoke of the abi ' ity that brother had shown already in the discharge of those dulies in the lodge which had up to the present time devolved upon him . Bro . J . J . Rogers , P . M ., P . P . G . Std . Br ., gave "The Installing Master , " which called forth a happy speech from Bro . Boydell , » hn urged younger Masons to work and do their part in maintaining the high repute of the Earl of Clarendon Lodge .
To the toast of "The Visitors , " Bro . Larkin replied , and to that of "The Past Masters" Bros . Goodchild , P . M ., P . P . G . Std . Br ., and VV . T . Graves , P . M ., P . P . G . S . B ., suitably replied . Bros . Overy , S . W ., and Southam . J . V . V ., made capital speeches in response to the toast of " The Officers , " in proposing which the W . M . expressed the hope lhat in all and everyone he had that day invested he should find a true supporter at every ordinary lodge gathering .
During the evening the VV . M . presented Bro . Grant , the outgoing Master , with a handsome and valuable Masonic jewel , suitably inscribed , in recognition of the able manner in which he performed the duties of his oflice , Bro . Grant suitably replying . The musical arrangements of the evening , uh ' ch were under Ihe care of Bro . most genial and kind-hearted man . This toast having been duly honoured , the M . E / .. brielly acknowledged the compliment . "The health of the Second and TI ird Principals " followed . In proposing the toast , the M . E . Z . spoke'in high tetms of commendation of the services rendered to Masonry by Comps . Stevens and Larcomb .
