Neither Preston—who is perhaps the best authority of the last century—nor the recent Book of Constitutions give any support to such an illogical practice . lanly outran Ins discretion , reminding- one 01 the bcotch gardener , who , finding a boy trespassing in his master ' s garden , captured him , and locked him up in a lobby at one end of the conservatory . When the gentlemen saw the boy there , he inquired the reason , and was told by the eardener of the boy ' s trangression for which this locking
up was the punishment . At the other end of the conversatory was another lobby and another boy , whom the gentleman recognised as the son of his gardener . Neither Preston—who is perhaps the best authority of the last century—nor the recent Book of Constitutions give any support to such an illogical practice . When the gentlemen saw the boy there , he inquired the reason , and was told by the eardener of the boy ' s trangression for which this locking
up was the punishment . At the other end of the conversatory was another lobby and another boy , whom the gentleman recognised as the son of his gardener . On asking the latter what the boy had done to incur this punishment , " Nothing at all , your honour , " said Sandy ; " Jemmy is a very good hoy ; but I locked him in the other lobby for tite sake of symmetry !—Yours fraternally , E .
